    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Isoflurane, a volatile anesthetic widely used clinically, has been implicated to be both neuroprotective and neurotoxic. The claim about isoflurane causing neural apoptosis remains controversial. In this study, we investigated the effects of isoflurane exposures on apoptotic and anti-apoptotic signals, cell proliferation and neurogenesis, and astroglial processes in young adult mouse brains.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixty 6-week-old mice were randomly assigned to four anesthetic concentration groups (0 as control and 0.6%, 1.3%, and 2%) with four recovery times (2 h and 1, 6, and 14 d) after 2-h isoflurane exposure. Immunohistochemistry measurements of activated caspase-3 and Bcl-xl for apoptotic and anti-apoptotic signals, respectively, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and vimentin for reactive astrocytosis, doublecortin (Dcx) for neurogenesis, and BrdU for cell proliferation were performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Contrary to the previous conclusion derived from studies with neonatal rodents, we found no evidence of isoflurane-induced apoptosis in the adult mouse brain. Neurogenesis in the subgranule zone of the dentate gyrus was not affected by isoflurane. However, there is a tendency of reduced cell proliferation after 2% isoflurane exposure. VIM and GFAP staining showed that isoflurane exposure caused a delayed reduction of astroglial processes in the hippocampus and dentate gyrus.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Two-hour exposure to isoflurane did not cause neuroapoptosis in adult brains. The delayed reduction in astroglial processes after isoflurane exposure may explain why some volatile anesthetics can confer neuroprotection after experimental stroke because reduced glial scarring facilitates better long-term neuronal recoveries.</p

    Low-Speed Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Model of a Hypersonic Research Airplane at Angles of Attack up to 90 deg for a Range of Reynolds Numbers

    Static force tests have been made at low subsonic speeds for a model of a hypersonic research airplane in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine the aerodynamic forces and moments up to an angle of attack of 90 deg for a range of Reynolds numbers. The Reynolds numbers, based on the mean aerodynamic chord, ranged from 740,000 to 1,900,000, which correspond to dynamic pressures from 15 to 100 lb/sq ft (Mach numbers from 0.10 to 0.27). The model was tested in the clean configuration with various horizontal-tail settings, horizontal tail off, lower rudder off, fuselage alone, and with various size strakes and slats on the nose of the model. Representative results of the present investigation are presented in plotted form, and a tabulation of all the data obtained is presented in a table. Appreciable effects on side force, yawing moment, and pitching moment are indicated by changes in Reynolds number for angles of attack of 40 to 90 deg

    Time Course Expression Analysis of 1[2-cyano-3,12-dioxooleana-1,9(11)-dien-28-oyl]imidazole Induction of Cytoprotection in Human Endothelial Cells.

    1[2-cyano-3,12-dioxooleana-1,9(11)-dien-28-oyl]imidazole (CDDO-Im), a synthetic derivative of oleanolic acid that exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in several animal and in vitro models, has been shown to be beneficial if given after injury. Although induction of heme oxygenase 1 appears to be a major effector of cytoprotection, the mechanism by which the overall effect is mediated is largely unknown. This study evaluated temporal gene expression profiles to better characterize the early transcriptional events and their relationship to the dynamics of the cytoprotective response in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) to CDDO-Im. Time-course gene expression profiling was performed on HUVEC treated with CDDO-Im for 0.5, 1, 3, 6, and 24 hours. More than 10 000 genes were statistically altered in their expression in at least 1 time point across the time course.     Spin-tunnel investigation of a 1/15-scale model of an Australian trainer airplane

    An investigation was conducted in the Langley Spin Tunnel of the spin and spin-recovery characteristics of a 1/15-scale model of an Australian trainer airplane. The invesigation included erect and inverted spins; configuration variables such as a long tail, fuselage strakes, 20 deg. elevator cutouts, and rudder modifications; and determination of the parachute size for emergency spin recovery. Also included in the investigation were wing leading-edge modifications to evaluate Reynolds number effects. Results indicate that the basic configuration will spin erect at an angle of attack of about 63 deg. at about 2 to 2.3 seconds per turn. Recovery from this spin was unsatisfactory by rudder reversal or by rudder reversal and ailerons deflected to full with the spin. The elevators had a pronounced effect on the recovery characteristics. The elevators-down position was very adverse to recoveries, whereas the elevators-up position provided favorable recovery effects. Moving the vertical tail aft (producing a long tail configuration) improved the spin characteristics, but the recoveries were still considered marginal. An extension to the basic rudder chord and length made a significant improvement in the spin and recovery characteristics. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained by deflecting the rudder to full against the spin and the elevators and ailerons to neutral

    On the vanishing viscosity limit in a disk

    We say that the solution u to the Navier-Stokes equations converges to a solution v to the Euler equations in the vanishing viscosity limit if u converges to v in the energy norm uniformly over a finite time interval. Working specifically in the unit disk, we show that a necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing viscosity limit to hold is the vanishing with the viscosity of the time-space average of the energy of u in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity due to modes (eigenfunctions of the Stokes operator) whose frequencies in the radial or the tangential direction lie between L and M. Here, L must be of order less than 1/(viscosity) and M must be of order greater than 1/(viscosity)

    NASA Constellation Distributed Simulation Middleware Trade Study

    This paper presents the results of a trade study designed to assess three distributed simulation middleware technologies for support of the NASA Constellation Distributed Space Exploration Simulation (DSES) project and Test and Verification Distributed System Integration Laboratory (DSIL). The technologies are the High Level Architecture (HLA), the Test and Training Enabling Architecture (TENA), and an XML-based variant of Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS-XML) coupled with the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). According to the criteria and weights determined in this study, HLA scores better than the other two for DSES as well as the DSIL
