    Recovery of continuous wave squeezing at low frequencies

    We propose and demonstrate a system that produces squeezed vacuum using a pair of optical parametric amplifiers. This scheme allows the production of phase sidebands on the squeezed vacuum which facilitate phase locking in downstream applications. We observe strong, stably locked, continuous wave vacuum squeezing at frequencies as low as 220 kHz. We propose an alternative resonator configuration to overcome low frequency squeezing degradation caused by the optical parametric amplifiers.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Teleportation of continuous variable polarisation states

    This paper discusses methods for the optical teleportation of continuous variable polarisation states. We show that using two pairs of entangled beams, generated using four squeezed beams, perfect teleportation of optical polarisation states can be performed. Restricting ourselves to 3 squeezed beams, we demonstrate that polarisation state teleportation can still exceed the classical limit. The 3-squeezer schemes involve either the use of quantum non-demolition measurement or biased entanglement generated from a single squeezed beam. We analyse the efficacies of these schemes in terms of fidelity, signal transfer coefficients and quantum correlations

    The Elementary School Success Profile (ESSP) is a social environmental assessment tool that collects data from 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, their parents/guardians, and their teachers. Ensuring the validity of the data collected with the child report component was a primary concern during the development of the ESSP. This article describes how cognitive testing was used to promote the validity of ESSP child report data. Four types of response problems were identified in data collected from 58 children. Strategies to address problems are described, and evidence of the association between item modifications and improved performance is presented. Cognitive testing is recommended as a standard procedure in the development of child report instruments

    Quantum noise of the electromagnetic field is one of the limiting noise sources in interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Shifting the spectrum of squeezed vacuum states downwards into the acoustic band of gravitational wave detectors is therefore of challenging demand to quantum optics experiments. We demonstrate a system that produces nonclassical continuous variable states of light that are squeezed at sideband frequencies below 100 kHz. A single optical parametric amplifier (OPA) is used in an optical noise cancellation scheme providing squeezed vacuum states with coherent bright phase modulation sidebands at higher frequencies. The system has been stably locked for half an hour limited by thermal stability of our laboratory.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    The Use of Backscattered Electron Imaging, X-Ray Microanalysis and X-Ray Microscopy in Demonstrating Physiological Cell Death

    The cytochemical localization of enzymatic activity by means of backscattered electron imaging (BEi) is reviewed and the application of BEI to changes in acid phosphatase and ATPase distribution during physiological (programmed) cell death in Heliothis midgut is explored. Programmed cell death entails the release of nascent free acid phosphatase as extracisternal hydrolase. This shift can readily be detected by means of the atomic number contrast imparted by BEI of the lead phosphatase reaction product, thus enabling the distribution of dying cells to be mapped. BEI is particularly useful in this context as it allows the examination of bulk specimens at low magnification. Death of cells is also accompanied by a collapse in ATPase activity which shows up as cytochemically negative areas in the X-ray microscope and by means of BEI. Acid phosphatase in normal cells is localized in the apical microvilli and lysosomes. Senescent or dying cells, however, clearly show a basally situated free hydrolase which migrates throughout the cell. Parallel TEM results confirm that this enzyme is ribosomal and extracisternal rather than lysosomal in origin. ATPase activity is largely limited to the apical microvilli, although there is some activity associated with the basal plasma membranes. The apical ATPase, however is partially resistant to ouabain. Young and mature cells are positive although in the latter case some microvilli may be lost as the cells acquire a negative cap or dome. Inhibition by bromotetramizole indicates that apical activity is not to any significant extent contributed to by alkaline phosphatase. Degenerate or dead cells are negative and can be seen as a mozaic of black patches among normal cells when imaged by means of BEI or X-ray microscopy

    Polarization squeezing of intense pulses with a fiber Sagnac interferometer

    We report on the generation of polarization squeezing of intense, short light pulses using an asymmetric fiber Sagnac interferometer. The Kerr nonlinearity of the fiber is exploited to produce independent amplitude squeezed pulses. The polarization squeezing properties of spatially overlapped amplitude squeezed and coherent states are discussed. The experimental results for a single amplitude squeezed beam are compared to the case of two phase-matched, spatially overlapped amplitude squeezed pulses. For the latter, noise variances of -3.4dB below shot noise in the S0 and the S1 and of -2.8dB in the S2 Stokes parameters were observed, which is comparable to the input squeezing magnitude.     Photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies of [Com(pyrene)n]− (m=1,2 and n=1,2) complexes

    Anion photoelectron spectroscopic experiments and density functional theory based calculations have been used to investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of neutral and anionic [Com(pyrene)n] (m,n=1–2) complexes. The calculated electron affinities and vertical transition energies of Com(pyrene)n are in good agreement with the measured values. Our results provide clear evidence for dimerization of Co atoms and formation of sandwich structures in these complexes. While the calculated spin magnetic moments of neutral Co2(pyrene)n complexes suggest a preference for ferromagnetic coupling between Co atoms, the spin magnetic moment of Co atom in Co(pyrene) and Co(pyrene)2 complexes was reduced to 1ÎŒB
