    A noncommutative framework for topological insulators

    We study topological insulators, regarded as physical systems giving rise to topological invariants determined by symmetries both linear and anti-linear. Our perspective is that of noncommutative index theory of operator algebras. In particular we formulate the index problems using Kasparov theory, both complex and real. We show that the periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors can be realised as a real or complex index pairing of a Kasparov module capturing internal symmetries of the Hamiltonian with a spectral triple encoding the geometry of the sample's (possibly noncommutative) Brillouin zone.Comment: 32 pages, final versio

    Low frequency creep in CoNiFe films

    The results of an investigation of domain wall motion excited by slow rise-time, bipolar, hard-axis pulses in vacuum deposited CoNiFe films 1500A to 2000A thick are presented. The results are consistent with those of comparable NiFe films in spite of large differences in film properties. The present low frequency creep data together with previously published results in this and other laboratories can be accounted for by a model which requires that the wall structure change usually associated with low frequency creep be predominately a gyromagnetic process. The correctness of this model is reinforced by the observation that the wall coercive force, the planar wall mobility, and the occurrence of an abrupt wall structure change are the only properties closely correlated to the creep displacement characteristics of a planar wall in low dispersion films

    Intra-cavitary uterine pathology in women with abnormal uterine bleeding: a prospective study of 1220 women.

    OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to assess how patients characteristics, bleeding pattern, sonographic endometrial thickness (ET) and additional features at unenhanced ultrasound examination (UTVS) and at fluid instillation sonography (FIS) contribute to the diagnosis of intracavitary uterine pathology in women presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB). We further aimed to report the prevalence of pathology in women presenting with AUB. METHODS: 1220 consecutive women presenting with AUB underwent UTVS, colour Doppler imaging (CDI) and FIS. Most women (n = 1042) had histological diagnosis. RESULTS: Mean age was 50 years and 37% were postmenopausal. Of 1220 women 54% were normal, polyps were diagnosed in 26%, intracavitary fibroids in 11%, hyperplasia without atypia in 4% and cancer in 3%. All cancers were diagnosed in postmenopausal (7%) or perimenopausal (1%) women. ET had a low predictive value in premenopausal women (LR+ and LR- of 1.34 and 0.74, respectively), while FIS had a LR+ and LR- of 6.20 and 0.24, respectively. After menopause, ET outperformed all patient characteristics for the prediction of endometrial pathology (LR+ and LR- of 3.13 and 0.24). The corresponding LR+ and LR- were 10.85 and 0.71 for CDI and 8.23 and 0.26 for FIS. CONCLUSION: About half of the women presenting to a bleeding clinic will have pathology. In premenopausal women, benign lesions are often the cause of AUB. For the prediction of intracavitary pathology ET is of little value in premenopausal women. CDI and FIS substantially improve the diagnostic accuracy

    Estimation of Laceration Length by Emergency Department Personnel

    Introduction Documentation and billing for laceration repair involves a description of wound length. We designed this study to test the hypothesis that emergency department (ED) personnel can accurately estimate wound lengths without the aid of a measuring device. Methods This was a single-center prospective observational study performed in an academic ED. Seven wounds of varying lengths were simulated by creating lacerations on purchased pigs’ ears and feet. We asked healthcare providers, defined as nurses and physicians working in the ED, to estimate the length of each wound by visual inspection. Length estimates were given in centimeters (cm) and inches. Estimated lengths were considered correct if the estimate was within 0.5 cm or 0.2 inches of the actual length. We calculated the differences between estimated and actual laceration lengths for each laceration and compared the accuracy of physicians to nurses using an unpaired t-test. Results Thirty-two physicians (nine faculty and 23 residents) and 16 nurses participated. All subjects tended to overestimate in cm and inches. Physicians were able to estimate laceration length within 0.5 cm 36% of the time and within 0.2 inches 29% of the time. Physicians were more accurate at estimating wound lengths than nurses in both cm and inches. Both physicians and nurses were more accurate at estimating shorter lengths (5.0 cm). Conclusion ED personnel are often unable to accurately estimate wound length in either cm or inches and tend to overestimate laceration lengths when based solely on visual inspection

    Self-reported camouflaging behaviours used by autistic adults during everyday social interactions.

    LAY ABSTRACT: Camouflaging can be thought of as the process through which autistic people modify their natural social behaviours to adapt to, cope within or influence the largely neurotypical (non-autistic) social world. Many autistic people experience negative reactions to their natural or intuitive social behaviours when interacting with non-autistic people. Over time, in response to these negative reactions, autistic people's social behaviour often changes. We refer to autistic people's changed behaviours as 'camouflaging behaviours'. Research exploring camouflaging behaviours is still at an early stage. This study investigated camouflaging behaviours used by autistic adults in everyday social interactions using a research method that was new to the field of autism. Specifically, 17 autistic adults were filmed taking part in a common everyday social situation - a conversation with a stranger. With the help of the video of this conversation, they then showed and described their camouflaging behaviours to a researcher. These autistic people identified and described a total of 38 different camouflaging behaviours. The detailed and specific information provided by autistic adults about camouflaging behaviours generated important new insights into the ways in which autistic people adapt to, cope within and influence the neurotypical (non-autistic) social world

    Deprotonation by Dehydration: The Origin of Ammonium Sensing in the AmtB Channel

    The AmtB channel passively allows the transport of NH(4) (+) across the membranes of bacteria via a “gas” NH(3) intermediate and is related by homology (sequentially, structurally, and functionally) to many forms of Rh protein (both erythroid and nonerythroid) found in animals and humans. New structural information on this channel has inspired computational studies aimed at clarifying various aspects of NH(4) (+) recruitment and binding in the periplasm, as well as its deprotonation. However, precise mechanisms for these events are still unknown, and, so far, explanations for subsequent NH(3) translocation and reprotonation at the cytoplasmic end of the channel have not been rigorously addressed. We employ molecular dynamics simulations and free energy methods on a full AmtB trimer system in membrane and bathed in electrolyte. Combining the potential of mean force for NH(4) (+)/NH(3) translocation with data from thermodynamic integration calculations allows us to find the apparent pK(a) of NH(4) (+) as a function of the transport axis. Our calculations reveal the specific sites at which its deprotonation (at the periplasmic end) and reprotonation (at the cytoplasmic end) occurs. Contrary to most hypotheses, which ascribe a proton-accepting role to various periplasmic or luminal residues of the channel, our results suggest that the most plausible proton donor/acceptor at either of these sites is water. Free-energetic analysis not only verifies crystallographically determined binding sites for NH(4) (+) and NH(3) along the transport axis, but also reveals a previously undetermined binding site for NH(4) (+) at the cytoplasmic end of the channel. Analysis of dynamics and the free energies of all possible loading states for NH(3) inside the channel also reveal that hydrophobic pressure and the free-energetic profile provided by the pore lumen drives this species toward the cytoplasm for protonation just before reaching the newly discovered site
