Listening to God is so vitally important. This project includes five 75-minute teaching sessions where participants learn how to listen to God through use of the spiritual disciplines of prayer, meditation, solitude, and journaling. Participants take part in various home assignments to practice these spiritual disciplines in their personal lives throughout the week. Participants respond to surveys rating their progress weekly in practicing each of the disciplines mentioned above. Results indicated increased awareness of hearing God speak following the intentional use of the spiritual disciplines and the increased practice of these disciplines by participants

Effectiveness of Early Postpartum Follow-up on Breastfeeding Attrition

    Get PDF
This quality improvement project evaluated the effectiveness of early postpartum follow-up in decreasing breastfeeding attrition rates among postpartum mothers in the first three weeks after delivery. Of special interest is the ability to identify possible differences among maternal characteristics such as age, ethnicity, race or parity. Although the benefits of breastfeeding are widely known and breastfeeding in the United States continues to rise, the breastfeeding rates among African-American women and other races remain lower with a notable significant gap. As of 2013, African American mothers lagged behind their white and Hispanic counterparts in the practice by at least 20 percentage points. A quasi-experimental design utilized a convenience sample of 26 women who are patients at a private obstetrical practice in the southern U.S., planning to breastfeed, and had due dates during May 2017 through September 2017. Participants completed The Breastfeeding Attrition Prediction Tool (BAPT), Breastfeeding Information Toolkit, Maternal Breastfeeding Evaluation Scale (MBES), and interviews. Most of the participants (94.4%) continued to breastfeed three weeks after delivery and none of the participants required additional referrals or support during the study. The screening process did not identify African American women at risk of breastfeeding attrition. There was no significant difference among income levels in regards to breastfeeding attrition. Participants reported the following breastfeeding barriers: sore nipples, lack of support, education, and work schedules

Best Alternatives to Statins for Treating Hyperlipidemia

    Get PDF
Most alternatives to statin therapy reduce cholesterol levels but do not consistently demonstrate a reduction in cardiac-related and all-cause mortality in patients with or without coronary heart disease (CHD). Fibrates and niacin decrease the risk of major coronary events; however, no statistically significant reductions in mortality have been shown. (Strength of Recommendation [SOR]: A, based on systematic review of randomized controlled trials [RCTs]). Resins decrease cardiovascular mortality but not total mortality. (SOR: A, based on review of RCTs). The effects of ezetimibe (Zetia) on cardiovascular outcomes and mortality are unknown. (SOR: C, based on a single RCT with disease-oriented evidence). Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation does not clearly demonstrate reductions in mortality. (SOR: A, based on two meta-analyses of RCTs). There is insufficient evidence to recommend the use of herbal therapy for the treatment of hyperlipidemia. (SOR: A, based on a systematic review of RCTs)

Sunscreen Use for Skin Cancer Prevention

    Get PDF
Daily sunscreen use reduces the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma but not the incidence of basal cell carcinoma. (Strength of Recommendation [SOR]: B, based on a single randomized controlled trial with less than 13 years of follow-up). It is unclear whether there are longer-term effects. There is no consistent, conclusive evidence that sunscreen use prevents melanoma. (SOR: C, meta-analysis of case-control studies)
