    Impact de la dilution opérationnelle sur le rendement métallurgique de l'or

    Ce mémoire rend compte d’une étude avec un minerai aurifère pour quantifier l’effet de la dilution excédentaire sur l’extraction de l’or. Depuis une quinzaine d’années, une tendance d’augmentation de la profondeur des mines souterraines est observée au Canada et dans le monde. Lorsque ces exploitations souterraines atteignent des profondeurs supérieures à 1000 m, elles deviennent sujettes à de fortes pressions et tensions causées par la roche. Cependant, l’effet résultant sur l’extraction du minerai est difficilement quantifiable occasionnant une dilution opérationnelle excédentaire à celle planifiée. Le projet de maîtrise analyse l’impact de cette dilution excédentaire sur le traitement du minerai d’une mine d’or située dans la région de l’Abitibi (nord-ouest du Québec). Pour ce faire, deux types de dilution sont considérés : la roche stérile et le remblai. Les résultats du test de Bond et de données de cyanuration issues de la littérature illustrent dans quelle mesure le taux d’alimentation peut être augmenté pour mitiger l’effet de cette dilution excédentaire et la perte de production en or. La discussion étudie également les points positifs et négatifs du montage conçu pour l’automatisation de la cyanuration du projet

    Loss of Hepatocyte-Nuclear-Factor-4α Affects Colonic Ion Transport and Causes Chronic Inflammation Resembling Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Mice

    BACKGROUND: Hnf4alpha, an epithelial specific transcriptional regulator, is decreased in inflammatory bowel disease and protects against chemically-induced colitis in mice. However, the precise role of this factor in maintaining normal inflammatory homeostasis of the intestine remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sole role of epithelial Hnf4alpha in the maintenance of gut inflammatory homeostasis in mice. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We show here that specific epithelial deletion of Hnf4alpha in mice causes spontaneous chronic intestinal inflammation leading to focal areas of crypt dropout, increased cytokines and chemokines secretion, immune cell infiltrates and crypt hyperplasia. A gene profiling analysis in diseased Hnf4alpha null colon confirms profound genetic changes in cell death and proliferative behaviour related to cancer. Among the genes involved in the immune protection through epithelial barrier function, we identify the ion transporter claudin-15 to be down-modulated early in the colon of Hnf4alpha mutants. This coincides with a significant decrease of mucosal ion transport but not of barrier permeability in young animals prior to the manifestation of the disease. We confirm that claudin-15 is a direct Hnf4alpha gene target in the intestinal epithelial context and is down-modulated in mouse experimental colitis and inflammatory bowel disease. CONCLUSION: Our results highlight the critical role of Hnf4alpha to maintain intestinal inflammatory homeostasis during mouse adult life and uncover a novel function for Hnf4alpha in the regulation of claudin-15 expression. This establishes Hnf4alpha as a mediator of ion epithelial transport, an important process for the maintenance of gut inflammatory homeostasis

    Exploring simulated driving performance among varsity male soccer players

    Background: It is documented that male athletes display riskier behaviors while driving (as well as in life in general) than female athletes and nonathletes. However, the literature has reported that athletes show better driving ability than nonathletes. This paradox between behaviors and abilities motivated the present study to further understand the collision risk of varsity athletes. Objective: The current study estimates the performance differences between varsity male soccer players and male undergraduate nonathletes on (1) a driving task and (2) three perceptual–cognitive tasks (associated with collision risk prediction; i.e., Useful Field of View [UFOV] test). Methods: Thirty-five male undergraduate students (15 varsity soccer players, 20 undergraduate nonathletes) took part in this study. Driving performance was assessed during 14 min of urban commuting using a driving simulator. While completing the simulated driving task and UFOV test, the physiological responses were monitored using an electrocardiograph (ECG) to document heart rate variability (HRV). Results: Varsity soccer players showed more risky behaviors at the wheel compared to their nonathlete student peers. Varsity soccer players spent more time over the speed limit, committed more driving errors, and adopted fewer safe and legal behaviors. However, no difference was observed between both groups on driving skill variables (i.e., vehicle control, vehicle mobility, ecodriving). For subtests 1 and 2 of the UFOV (i.e., processing speed, divided attention), both groups performed identically (i.e., 17 ms). The nonathlete group tended to perform better on the selective attention task (i.e., subtest 3 of UFOV test; 63.2 ± 6.2 ms vs. 87.2 ± 10.7 ms, respectively; this difference was not significant, P = .76). Conclusion: Preventive driving measures should be enforced in this high-risk population to develop strategies for risk reduction in male team athletes

    qMRI-BIDS: An extension to the brain imaging data structure for quantitative magnetic resonance imaging data

    The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) established community consensus on the organization of data and metadata for several neuroimaging modalities. Traditionally, BIDS had a strong focus on functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) datasets and lacked guidance on how to store multimodal structural MRI datasets. Here, we present and describe the BIDS Extension Proposal 001 (BEP001), which adds a range of quantitative MRI (qMRI) applications to the BIDS. In general, the aim of qMRI is to characterize brain microstructure by quantifying the physical MR parameters of the tissue via computational, biophysical models. By proposing this new standard, we envision standardization of qMRI through multicenter dissemination of interoperable datasets. This way, BIDS can act as a catalyst of convergence between qMRI methods development and application-driven neuroimaging studies that can help develop quantitative biomarkers for neural tissue characterization. In conclusion, this BIDS extension offers a common ground for developers to exchange novel imaging data and tools, reducing the entrance barrier for qMRI in the field of neuroimaging

    A simple and robust method for automating analysis of naĂŻve and regenerating peripheral nerves

    ABSTRACT: Background Manual axon histomorphometry (AH) is time- and resource-intensive, which has inspired many attempts at automation. However, there has been little investigation on implementation of automated programs for widespread use. Ideally such a program should be able to perform AH across imaging modalities and nerve states. AxonDeepSeg (ADS) is an open source deep learning program that has previously been validated in electron microscopy. We evaluated the robustness of ADS for peripheral nerve axonal histomorphometry in light micrographs prepared using two different methods. Methods Axon histomorphometry using ADS and manual analysis (gold-standard) was performed on light micrographs of naĂŻve or regenerating rat median nerve cross-sections prepared with either toluidine-resin or osmium-paraffin embedding protocols. The parameters of interest included axon count, axon diameter, myelin thickness, and g-ratio. Results Manual and automatic ADS axon counts demonstrated good agreement in naĂŻve nerves and moderate agreement on regenerating nerves. There were small but consistent differences in measured axon diameter, myelin thickness and g-ratio; however, absolute differences were small. Both methods appropriately identified differences between naĂŻve and regenerating nerves. ADS was faster than manual axon analysis. Conclusions Without any algorithm retraining, ADS was able to appropriately identify critical differences between naĂŻve and regenerating nerves and work with different sample preparation methods of peripheral nerve light micrographs. While there were differences between absolute values between manual and ADS, ADS performed consistently and required much less time. ADS is an accessible and robust tool for AH that can provide consistent analysis across protocols and nerve states

    qMRLab: Quantitative MRI analysis, under one umbrella

    ABSTRACT: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revolutionized the way we look at the human body. However, conventional MR scanners are not measurement devices. They produce digital images represented by “shades of grey”, and the intensity of the shades depends on the way the images are acquired. This is why it is difficult to compare images acquired at different clinical sites, limiting the diagnostic, prognostic, and scientific potential of the technology. Quantitative MRI (qMRI) aims to overcome this problem by assigning units to MR images, ensuring that the values represent a measurable quantity that can be reproduced within and across sites. While the vision for quantitative MRI is to overcome site-dependent variations, this is still a challenge due to variability in the hardware and software used by MR vendors to produce quantitative MRI maps. Although qMRI has yet to enter mainstream clinical use, imaging scientists see great promise in the technique’s potential to characterize tissue microstructure. However, most qMRI tools for fundamental research are developed in-house and are difficult to port across sites, which in turn hampers their standardization, reproducibility, and widespread adoption. To tackle this problem, we developed qMRLab, an open-source software package that provides a wide selection of qMRI methods for data fitting, simulation and protocol optimization Figure 1.
