Exploring Algerian Higher Education Classroom Discourse: Verbal Abuse Manifestations and its Impacts on Learners of English

The very mentioning of verbal abuse is more likely to send the reader/listener to educational settings like the primary, middle, and high schools. Howbeit, it is rare to affiliate between this linguistic maltreatment and higher education settings. The aim of this study is to explore EFL university learners’ experiences of verbal abuse by means of investigating the various effects of verbal abuse on classroom participation, academic achievements and self-esteem. This study is based on the reflection of nine female master learners from the University of Mostaganem of their verbal abuse experiences. The data have been collected from a survey questionnaire that comprises different sections, involving closed and open-ended questions. The results showcase that learners tend to experience verbal abuse at the university, articulated by some teachers in a form of shaming and public criticizing, which mainly targets their “English language abilities”. As to its effects, it has been found that due to learners’ age (over 20years old), verbal abuse does not negatively affect learners’ motivation, self-esteem, and academic achievements; however, it tends to reduce their classroom participation rate

Taxonomic study and partial characterization of antimicrobial compounds from a moderately halophilic strain of the genus Actinoalloteichus

A moderately halophilic actinomycete strain designated AH97 was isolated from a saline Saharan soil, and selected for its antimicrobial activities against bacteria and fungi. The AH97 strain was identified by morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses to the genus Actinoalloteichus. Analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence of strain AH97 showed a similarity level ranging between 95.8% and 98.4% within Actinoalloteichus species, with A. hymeniacidonis the most closely related. The comparison of the physiological characteristics of AH97 with those of known species of Actinoalloteichus showed significant differences. Strain AH97 showed an antibacterial and antifungal activity against broad spectrum of microorganisms known to be human and plant pathogens. The bioactive compounds were extracted from the filtrate culture with n-butanol and purified using thin layer chromatography and high pressure liquid chromatography procedures. Two active products were isolated, one hydrophilic fraction (F1) and another hydrophobic (F2). Ultraviolet-visible, infrared, mass and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies suggested that these molecules were the dioctyl phthalate (F2) and an aminoglycosidic compound (F1)

Biosynthesis of spathulenol and camphor stand as a competitive route to artemisinin production as revealed by a new chemometric convergence approach based on nine locations’ field-grown Artemesia annua L.

Since isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and its isomer dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) are the universal precursors of both essential oil components, and the antimalarial agent artemisinin and its derivatives in Artemesia annua L., this paper aims to correlate the spotted differences in their concentrations by screening Artemesia annua L. field-grown in nine locations around the world that may reveal the role of any these compounds as precursors or competitors in the biosynthetic pathway of the sesquiterpene lactone : artemisinin. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that artemisinin is positively correlated to β-pinene, 1.8-cineole, sabinene hydrate, borneol and 1-octen-3-ol; but negatively to artemisinic acid and β-caryophyllene oxide. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) classified locations into two distinct groups in which artemisinin concentration stood as the main driving factor to build similarities between the locations. In parallel, an improved convergence approach based on idiosyncratic similarities able to capture heterogeneity across individuals is proposed, which was able to classify compounds into four distinct clusters. Artemisinin appeared to be cross-linked to p-cymene, cis-carvyle acetate, 4-terpinene-1-ol, β-caryophyllene, β-farnesene, β-selinene, α-selinene, β-caryophyllene oxide and α-costol. It is interesting to see how camphor and spathulenol behaved as a distinct cluster group, which suggests that biosynthesis of these two compounds follows a different but a competitive pathway ; thus limiting their production could be a key to control and enhance the production of artemisinin

The Thief, His Mother, and Us: Sociological Issues with Implications in Ten Pedagogisable Aesop Fables

He was an “ugly” slave. Born around 620 BCE, Aesop has magnificently depicted timeless sociological issues in numerous universally known fables. Unknown in schools, for being probably too “popular” to be taken seriously, Aesop fables could represent a significant source of wisdom and even knowledge about sociology. Men, women, boys, daughters, sons, wives, maids, thieves, fathers, almost every member of a modern society has been immortalized in a strikingly simple complexity. The present paper will be an investigation through a conceptual content analysis of Aesop’s embedded theories -texts and sub-texts- found in ten selected fables around the notions of security, parentlessness, ageism in the work place, power, status, and even surprisingly beyond that. The hidden facet of the Greek slave as a sociologist might be (re)discovered through a comparative study between sociology theories (academic content) and ancient Greek fables (popular culture). The connection between the two words/worlds -academic vs. the non-academic fictional pop culture- is often known to be exclusive since apparently conflictual. The outcome of this study has shown a potentially pedagogisable content to be taught in sociology schools and elsewhere like psychology schools and probably more. Sharia-compliant investment finance occupies an advanced position in contemporary research, whereas philanthropic finance has not been paid much attention. Hence, I have participated in this meeting with this paper, in which I try to explore the inexhaustible stock of saving financial resources serving economic development. Zakat and Waqf are the main pillars of the development and expansion of the third sector as a complement to the public and private sectors. This can be achieved only through capacity building of both institutions and their support under a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework

As a governance mechanism, the main objective of the external audit is to ensure the reliability of the financial information produced and disseminated by the entity and to prevent fraud and embezzlement that could harm that entity in the first place. The quality of the audit is usually understood by competence and independence. In order to ensure transparency in financial information and participate in the proper functioning of the entity, this article aims to study the contribution of financial auditing to good governance in order to reduce the information asymmetry between managers. of an entity and its shareholders and between managers and other stakeholders and thus to find a balance between the various bodies. This function can only be performed with a responsible, independent and technically competent auditor who complies with audit procedures and pursues quality training. &nbsp

Halophilic Actinomycetes in 1 Saharan Soils of Algeria: Isolation, Taxonomy and Antagonistic Properties

The diversity of a population of 52 halophilic actinomycetes was evaluated by a polyphasic approach, which showed the presence of Actinopolyspora, Nocardiopsis, Saccharomonospora, Streptomonospora and Saccharopolyspora genera. One strain was considered to be a new member of the last genus and several other strains seem to be new species. Furthermore, 50% of strains were active against a broad range of indicators and contained genes encoding polyketide synthetases and nonribosomal peptide synthetases
