    Particles with anomalous magnetic moment in external e.m. fields: the proper time formulation

    In this paper we evaluate the expression for the Green function of a pseudo-classical spinning particle interacting with constant electromagnetic external fields by taking into account the anomalous magnetic and electric moments of the particle. The spin degrees of freedom are described in terms of Grassmann variables and the evolution operator is obtained through the Fock-Schwinger proper time method.Comment: 10 page

    Numerical experiments with two smoothing type-algorithms for nonlinear complementarity problems

    In this paper we deal with the numerical experiments of two smoothing descent-type algorithms for solving nonlinear complementarity problems (NCP). The first algorithm is due to Kanzow and the second one is due to Peng. These algorithms are both based on the reformulation of (NCP) as unconstrained minimization problems by using some smoothing merit functions including the so-called (NCP)-functions. Under suitable conditions they both showed that any stationary point of these problems are solutions of (NCP). For their numerical performances many strategies are used. Finally, these algorithms are applied to some problems of (NCP) found in the literature

    Preliminary results of a paleoseismological analysis along the Sahel fault (Algeria): New evidence for historical seismic events

    International audienceThe ∼60 km-long Sahel ridge west of Algiers (Tell Atlas, north Algeria) is considered as an ENE-WSW fault-propagation fold running along the Mediterranean coast and associated with a north-west dipping thrust. Its proximity with Algiers makes this structure a potential source of destructive earthquakes that could hit the capital city, as occurred in 1365 AD and 1716 AD. The first paleoseismologic investigation on the Sahel ridge was conducted in order to detect paleo-ruptures related to active faulting and to date them. From the first investigations in the area, a first trench was excavated across bending-moment normal faults induced by flexural slip folding in the hanging wall of the Sahel anticline thrust ramp. Paleoseismological analyses recognize eight rupture events affecting colluvial deposits. 14C dating indicates that these events are very young, six of them being younger than 778 AD. The first sedimentary record indicates two ruptures before 1211 AD, i.e. older than the first historical earthquake documented in the region. Three events have age ranges compatible with the 1365, 1673 and 1716 Algiers earthquakes, whereas three other ones depict very recent ages, i.e. younger than 1700 AD. Potential of these secondary extrados faults for determining paleoseismic events and thrust behaviour is discussed

Initially, the use of stents was restricted to malignant strictures in patients with metastatic disease. But thanks to reduction of the morbidity and mortality rates, they are now used with curative intention and in patients with benign diseases after careful selection. However, for patients presenting with colon obstruction due to an advanced colon carcinoma, the mortality and morbidity are still high. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of indications, techniques and further developments of the stents in the gastrointestinal tract and to highlight the predominant role of multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) in the detection of potential complications

    Searching for the seafloor signature of the 21 May 2003 Boumerdès earthquake offshore central Algeria

    Shaking by moderate to large earthquakes in the Mediterranean Sea has proved in the past to potentially trigger catastrophic sediment collapse and flow. On 21 May 2003, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake located near Boumerdès (central Algerian coast) triggered large turbidity currents responsible for 29 submarine cable breaks at the foot of the continental slope over ~150 km from west to east. Seafloor bathymetry and backscatter imagery show the potential imprints of the 2003 event and of previous events. Large slope scarps resulting from active deformation may locally enhance sediment instabilities, although faults are not directly visible at the seafloor. Erosion is evident at the foot of the margin and along the paths of the numerous canyons and valleys. Cable breaks are located at the outlets of submarine valleys and in areas of turbiditic levee overspilling and demonstrate the multi-source and multi-path character of the 2003 turbiditic event. Rough estimates of turbidity flow velocity are not straightforward because of the multiple breaks along the same cable, but seem compatible with those measured in other submarine cable break studies elsewhere. <br><br> While the signature of the turbidity currents is mostly erosional on the continental slope, turbidite beds alternating with hemipelagites accumulate in the distal reaches of sediment dispersal systems. In perspective, more chronological work on distal turbidite successions offshore Algeria offers promising perspectives for paleoseismology reconstructions based on turbidite dating, if synchronous turbidites along independent sedimentary dispersal systems are found to support triggering by major earthquakes. Preliminary results on sediment core PSM-KS23 off Boumerdès typically show a 800-yr interval between turbidites during the Holocene, in accordance with the estimated mean seismic cycle on land, even if at this stage it is not yet possible to prove the earthquake origin of all the turbidites

    Solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas: MR imaging findings in 21 patients.

    PURPOSE: Solid-pseudopapillary tumor (SPT) of the pancreas is a rare, low-grade malignancy, which mostly occurs in adolescent and young adult females. The goal of this study was to retrospectively analyze the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging presentation of SPT of the pancreas. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the preoperative MR imaging examinations and the medical, surgical and histopathological records of 21 patients who underwent surgery for SPT of the pancreas. MR imaging included T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and gadolinium chelate-enhanced MR imaging. In addition, 10 patients had diffusion-weighted (DW) MR imaging. MR examinations were retrospectively reviewed for location, size, morphological features and signal intensity of the tumors. RESULTS: Nineteen women and 2 men (median age, 23 years; range, 14-59) were included. Seven patients (7/21; 33%) presented with abdominal symptoms. The median largest tumor diameter was 53mm (range, 32-141 mm). SPTs were located in the pancreatic head, body, and tail in 9 (9/21; 43%), 5 (5/21; 24%) and 7 (7/21, 33%) patients, respectively. All patients (21/21; 100%) had a single SPT. SPTs were more frequently oval (12/21; 57%), predominantly solid (12/21; 57%), fully encapsulated (16/21; 76%), larger than 30 mm (21/21; 100%), hypointense on T1-weighted MR images (21/21, 100%), hyperintense on T2-weighted MR images (21/21; 100%) and with an enhancing capsule after gadolinium-chelate administration (21/21; 100%). CONCLUSIONS: There is trend of appearance for SPT of the pancreas on MR imaging but that variations may be observed in a number of cases. SPT uniformly presents as a single, well-demarcated and encapsulated pancreatic mass

Since fault diagnosis is directly related to the features of a system, there have been many research studies aimed to develop methods for the selection of the relevant features. Moreover, there are no universal features for a particular application domain such as machine diagnosis. For example, in machine bearing fault diagnosis, these features are often selected by an expert or based on previous experience. Thus, for each bearing machine type, the relevant features must be selected. This paper attempts to solve the problem of relevant features identification by building an automatic fault diagnosis process based on relevant feature selection using a data-driven approach. The proposed approach starts with the extraction of the time-domain features from the input signals. Then, a feature reduction algorithm based on cross-correlation filter is applied to reduce the time and cost of the processing. Unsupervised learning mechanism using K-means++ selects the relevant fault features based on the squared Euclidian distance between different health states. Finally, the selected features are used as inputs to a self-organizing map producing our health indicator. The proposed method is tested on roller bearing benchmark datasets.Peer reviewe

    Do case-only designs yield consistent results across design and different databases? A case study of hip fractures and benzodiazepines.

    BACKGROUND: The case-crossover (CXO) and self-controlled case series (SCCS) designs are increasingly used in pharmacoepidemiology. In both, relative risk estimates are obtained within persons, implicitly controlling for time-fixed confounding variables. OBJECTIVES: To examine the consistency of relative risk estimates of hip/femur fractures (HFF) associated with the use of benzodiazepines (BZD) across case-only designs in two databases (DBs), when a common protocol was applied. METHODS: CXO and SCCS studies were conducted in BIFAP (Spain) and CPRD (UK). Exposure to BZD was divided into non-use, current, recent and past use. For CXO, odds ratios (OR; 95%CI) of current use versus non-use/past were estimated using conditional logistic regression adjusted for co-medications (AOR). For the SCCS, conditional Poisson regression was used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRR; 95%CI) of current use versus non/past-use, adjusted for age. To investigate possible event-exposure dependence the relative risk in the 30 days prior to first BZD exposure was also evaluated. RESULTS: In the CXO current use of BZD was associated with an increased risk of HFF in both DBs, AORBIFAP = 1.47 (1.29-1.67) and AORCPRD = 1.55 (1.41-1.70). In the SCCS, IRRs for current exposure was 0.79 (0.72-0.86) in BIFAP and 1.21 (1.13-1.30) in CPRD. However, when we considered separately the 30-day pre-exposure period, the IRR for current period was 1.43 (1.31-1.57) in BIFAP and 1.37 (1.27-1.47) in CPRD. CONCLUSIONS: CXO designs yielded consistent results across DBs, while initial SCCS analyses did not. Accounting for event-exposure dependence, estimates derived from SCCS were more consistent across DBs and designs

    Incidence, risk factors and re-exacerbation rate of severe asthma exacerbations in a multinational, multidatabase pediatric cohort study

    Background: There are sparse real-world data on severe asthma exacerbations (SAE) in children. This multinational cohort study assessed the incidence of and risk factors for SAE and the incidence of asthma-related rehospitalization in children with asthma. Methods: Asthma patients 5-17 years old with ≥1 year of follow-up were identified in six European electronic databases from the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, Denmark and Spain in 2008-2013. Asthma was defined as ≥1 asthma-specific disease code within 3 months of prescriptions/dispensing of asthma medication. Severe asthma was defined as high-dosed inhaled corticosteroids plus a second controller. SAE was defined by systemic corticosteroids, emergency department visit and/or hospitalization all for reason of asthma. Risk factors for SAE were estimated by Poisson regression analyses. Results: The cohort consisted of 212 060 paediatric asthma patients contributing to 678 625 patient-years (PY). SAE rates ranged between 17 and 198/1000 PY and were higher in severe asthma and highest in severe asthma patients with a history of exacerbations. Prior SAE (incidence rate ratio 3-45) and younger age increased the SAE risk in all countries, whereas obesity, atopy and GERD were a risk factor in some but not all countries. Rehospitalization rates were up to 79% within 1 year. Conclusions: In a real-world setting, SAE rates were highest in children with severe asthma with a history of exacerbations. Many severe asthma patients were rehospitalized within 1 year. Asthma management focusing on prevention of SAE is important to reduce the burden of asthma

    Duodenal carcinoma at the ligament of Treitz. A molecular and clinical perspective

    Background There is very small occurrence of adenocarcinoma in the small bowel. We present a case of primary duodenal adenocarcinoma and discuss the findings of the case diagnostic modalities, current knowledge on the molecular biology behind small bowel neoplasms and treatment options. Case The patient had a history of iron deficiency anemia and occult bleeding with extensive workup consisting of upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, upper gastrointestinal series with small bowel follow through and push enteroscopy. Due to persistent abdominal pain and iron deficiency anemia the patient underwent push enteroscopy which revealed adenocarcinoma of the duodenum. The patient underwent en-bloc duodenectomy which revealed T3N1M0 adenocarcinoma of the 4th portion of the duodenum. Conclusions Primary duodenal carcinoma, although rare should be considered in the differential diagnosis of occult gastrointestinal bleeding when evaluation of the lower and upper GI tract is unremarkable.
