Partial characterization of agricultural-machinery contractor services in the micro region 2 - La Pampa province, Argentina
The introduction of new technologies such as direct sowing and transgenic seeds, have caused significant changes in production, economic, social and environmental aspects. Soil compaction induced by machinery at polo fields in Argentina
The land leveling is a form of disturbance of the soil that alters its physical properties.
In Argentine the leveling of lands is also extended to a different objective: the sport field
construction. The movement of soil from one place to another one produces a rupture of
the structure with increase of the volume occupied by air. The soil particles are reordered
in a different form from the original one. The soil movements often produce a mixture of
edafics horizons. This packing effect diminishes the volume occupied by the pores and
increases bulk density and soil tension. One of the main problems that are generated by
the land leveling is the compaction. When soil is compacted, non-accommodating faces
form smaller aggregates pores. During the whole work, different problems appears, such
as: leveling precision; project mark errors in the land, the machinery passes calculation
to carry out the work; soil moisture content at the land leveling and the rain value during
the earth movement. The present study was carried out in fields located 100 km away
from Buenos Aires (34°31'47" S 59°02'15" W). The main objectives of the work were
i) to contribute with evidence to the now-a-day knowledge platform, related to the soil
physical-mechanical behavior in soils subjected to soil movement with sport aims; ii) to
feature the mechanical behavior of a typical argiudol soil in a land leveled polo field.
The more important results were: a) swelling factor values > 25%, b) the impact of the
soil movement on the organic mater content is smaller than the one happened on the
physical parameters, c) both, the traffic intensity as well as the machinery weight have
influence on the swelling factor index/compaction d) the machinery passes produces
subsoil compaction. Top soil compaction is given, in a further degree, in a field in use,
due to the uses of maintenance machineries and the horse transit for the game.

Soil compaction caused by the impact of machinery traffic during corn (Zea mays) harvest
The aim of this work was to study soil compaction caused by the traffic of two types of combine harvesters and a tractor plus a grain cart with two loading conditions (fully loaded hoppers-empty hoppers) during corn harvest on vertic argiudoll soil by means of direct seeding system. Soil penetration resistance (PR) and soil bulk density (BD) were measured to a depth of 40 cm in five sampling sites. Response variables deter-minations were also analyzed. The tractor and the fully loaded grain cart traffic caused greater soil compaction in all the sampling depths, exceeding 60 cm on both sides of the footprint center. What is more, the values obtained from PR and BD measurements were higher than those values considered suitable for normal root growth. This was only evident in the tread width of the tires during the passing of the two fully loaded combine harvesters. The analysis of inflation pressures and tire loads used, indicated in some cases, poor concordance between these variables. The analysis also indicated that the tires were inflated to the limit of resistance.
Highlights
According to the results obtained, it is convenient to develop a controlled traffic farming strategy for harvesting.
Some machines have tires that do not withstand the demands.
The repeated passes of machinery caused more compaction than the mass involved. The aim of this work was to study soil compaction caused by the traffic of two types of combine harvesters and a tractor plus a grain cart with two loading conditions (fully loaded hoppers-empty hoppers) during corn harvest on vertic argiudoll soil by means of direct seeding system. Soil Sustainability: Analysis of the Soil Compaction under Heavy Agricultural Machinery Traffic in Extensive Crops
Crop establishment depends mostly on the soil preparation and sowing methods used. Our main goal was to evaluate soil compaction and its effects on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) yields and seedling emergence with two different tillage methods: no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT). The study was done in the Western Pampas Region during three cropping seasons. The soil of the study site is a Mollisol. The variables measured were: (1) cone index (CI), (2) dry bulk density (DBD), (3) seedling emergence (SE), and (4) crops yield (CY). For both crops, seedling emergence was slower in NT than in CT, but results were similar 22 days after sowing. After 3 years, the results show that in NT the DBD and CI reached values of 1653 kg m−3 and 3210 kPa, respectively (between 275 and 300 mm). While in CT the values of DBD and CI reached were 1540 kg m−3 and 2300 kPa respectively at the same depth. The highest yields were found in CT (3.31 and 4.10 tons/ha−1, for soybean and wheat, respectively) compared to NT (2.91 and 3.53 tons/ha−1). Topsoil horizon has to be tilled to improve crop yields. In spite of the high number of equipment passes in CT, both tillage systems caused subsoil compaction
Green roofs : contribution of Carpobrotus Acinaciformis to the integrated management of urban surface runoff
In the mathematical modeling of urban watershed, the parameters that are
necessary to know, are the factors of the basin that can modify the surface runoff. The
green roofs can modify (from its capacity of retention and delay the water flow originated
by the rainfalls), the superficial run-off. But the magnitude that they can do it,
will depend on the response of the above mentioned green roofs to the rainfalls, and
this response will be different according to the type of green roof (basically substrate
thickness and type of vegetation). Because of it, in the mathematical simulation models,
the modeling will be more precise depending on the precision of the information sources
used. The aim of this work has been to determine the capacity of retention that present
green roof, extensive and intensive, planted with Carpobrotus acinaciformis. The results
would allow affirming, for the studied conditions, that the Carpobrutus acinaciformis,
can realize a contribution to the decrease of the urban runoffs for cities located in the
Buenos Aires coast as that of this work.Fil: Villalba, Gustavo Ariel.

Logging contractors' growth in the southern cone: an analysis of contractor business strategies, innovation, and mechanization
Forest plantations have increased in South America for several decades. Harvesting is performed mainly through contractor companies. Our hypothesis is that logging contractors that innovate, grow more than others. We analyzed logging contractors through production and innovation, working in Argentina (22), Brazil (35) and Uruguay (10), through surveys between 2008 and 2012. Factors that affected firm growth were analyzed with linear mixed effect models. In all three countries there was a preponderance of logging contractors with cellulose companies. Our results show that logging firms that had mutualistic supply chain relations with the contracting organizations had better production indicators and lower cost per ton than other independent harvesting contractors. In the last 10 years, mechanization increased significantly, reducing the number of employees. Innovation was the most significant variable in enhanced logging production. For the period from 10 to 5 years before the survey period, the number of employees and type of contracting company were most significant on loggers' growth. During the last 5-year period before the survey period, the number of employees and innovation were significant. Thus, during the last 10 years, logging companies shifted from growth based on type of the firm to the amount of innovation by firms, and contracting companies.Fil: Mac Donagh, Patricio Miguel. Stubble rice (Oryza sativa L.) in direct sowing systems : handling alternatives
The main purposes of this study were to: a) Find out how tools (deflectors, spreaders
and choppers) can be used best for improving mineralization of stubble from harvesting rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown under direct sowing and b) Determine, for short periods, the amount of crop residues deposited on the surface and its mineralization time with various management techniques. The treatments were: harvester with spreader (T1DD), harvester without spreader (T2SDT), harvester with rubber centrifugal
spreader (T3DC) and harvester with metal spreader (T4DM). Implemented alternatives: a) rotary weed cutter b) blade roller and c) burning crop residues. In the first two alternatives, three doses of urea were applied. The main results were: a) The harvester without spreader (T2SDT) deposited more material in the center of the tail (21680 kg ha-1), b) when distribution of crop residues from the (T3DC) was more uniform compared with the other treatments. The main conclusions were: 1) the rubber centrifugal spreader and metal spreader produced better distribution of the stubble, 2) The use of rotary weed cutter or blade roller on stubble distributed by harvesters T3DC and T4DM treatments caused accelerated mineralization of the same, 3) Urea doses caused little increase in mineralization of the rice stubble.Fil: Hidalgo, Ramón J..
