    Emergence of hierarchical networks and polysynchronous behaviour in simple adaptive systems

    We describe the dynamics of a simple adaptive network. The network architecture evolves to a number of disconnected components on which the dynamics is characterized by the possibility of differently synchronized nodes within the same network (polysynchronous states).     In this letter we introduce a possible measure of the size of CP violation in the Standard Model and its extensions, based on quantities invariant under the change of weak quark basis.     Observing a high-statistics neutrino signal from a galactic supernova (SN) would allow one to test the standard delayed explosion scenario and may allow one to distinguish between the normal and inverted neutrino mass ordering due to the effects of flavor oscillations in the SN envelope. One may even observe a signature of SN shock-wave propagation in the detailed time-evolution of the neutrino spectra.     Theoretical adequacy, methodological quality and efficacy of online interventions targeting resilience: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: There is a growing interest in the promotion of mental health, and concepts as resilience are re-emerging and taking relevance. In addition, Information and Communication Technologies can provide potential benefits in the field of mental health, and the treatment of mental disorders in particular. This study aims to synthesize the evidence of internet-based resilience interventions, analyzing the theoretical adequacy, methodological quality and efficacy. METHODS: A systematic search was performed. The eligibility criteria stated for this article were: randomized controlled trials targeted at adults or adolescents and including any psychological intervention focussing on resilience in its rationale or design. Studies with direct (e.g. resilience scales) and proximal resilience measures (e.g. scales on well-being) were included. Risk of bias was assessed for each trial using Cochrane''s Collaboration Tool. Two reviewers worked independently in order to identify potential articles. A total of 11 articles were selected. A random-effects pooling model using the Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman method based on direct and proximal resilience measures at post-test was used. RESULTS: The overall effects of online resilience training compared to control groups at post-test were not significant; the effect size concerning the improvement of resilience was g=0.12 (95% CI: -0.14 to 0.38). In addition, a potential association between the type of outcome and the effect size could be revealed. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present meta-analysis showed that the overall effect of online resilience trainings was not significant. Nonetheless, a tendency for a higher benefit for resilience was found in the studies with a clear assessment theory, indicating some promising effects.     Within the framework of theories where both scalars and fermions are present, we develop a systematic prescription for the construction of CP-violating quantities that are invariant under basis transformations of those matter fields. In theories with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking, the analysis involves the vevs' transformation properties under a scalar basis change, with a considerable simplification of the study of CP violation in the scalar sector. These techniques are then applied in detail to the two Higgs-doublet model with quarks. It is shown that there are new invariants involving scalar-fermion interactions, besides those already derived in previous analyses for the fermion-gauge and scalar-gauge sectors.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, no figure

    Small violations of unitarity, the phase in Bs mixing and visible t->cZ decays at the LHC

    We show that it is possible to accommodate the observed size of the phase in Bs0B^0_s--Bˉs0\bar B^0_s, mixing in the framework of a model with violation of 3×33\times 3 unitarity. This violation is associated to the presence of a new Q=2/3Q=2/3 isosinglet quark TT, which mixes both with tt and cc and has a mass not exceeding 500 GeV. The crucial point is the fact that this framework allows for χarg(VtsVcbVtbVcs)\chi\equiv\arg(-V_{ts}V_{cb}V_{tb}^*V_{cs}^*) of order λ\lambda, to be contrasted with the situation in the Standard Model, where χ\chi is constrained to be of order λ2\lambda^2. We point out that this scenario implies rare top decays tcZt\to cZ at a rate observable at the LHC and Vtb|V_{tb}| significantly different from unity. In this framework, one may also account for the observed size of D0D^0--Dˉ0\bar D^0 mixing without having to invoke long distance contributions. It is also shown that in the present scenario, the observed size of D0D^0--Dˉ0\bar D^0 mixing constrains χarg(VcdVusVcsVud)\chi^\prime\equiv\arg(-V_{cd}V_{us}V_{cs}^*V_{ud}^*) to be of order λ4\lambda^4, which is significantly smaller than what is allowed in generic models with violations of 3×33\times 3 unitarity.Comment: 20 pages.     Searching for New Physics in Leptonic Decays of Bottomonium

    New Physics can show up in various well-known processes already studied in the Standard Model, in particular by modifying decay rates to some extent. In this work, I examine leptonic decays of Υ\Upsilon vector resonances of bottomonium below BBˉB\bar{B} production, subsequent to a magnetic dipole radiative structural transition of the vector resonance yielding a pseudoscalar continuum state, searching for the existence of a light Higgs-like neutral boson that would imply a slight but experimentally measurable breaking of lepton universality.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages, 1 EPS figur
