A role for doctors in assisted dying? An analysis of legal regulations and medical professional positions in six European countries
An extensive debate about assisted suicide and euthanasia has been taking place in westernized countries during the last twenty years. Traditionally, the medical profession has maintained a clear distance from euthanasia and assisted suicide, but this distance can no longer be justified by simply referring to the law.
This paper analyses the legal and, in particular, medical professional positions with respect to the doctor’s role in assisted dying in certain Western European countries (Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom) and discusses their implications for doctors
Elevated serum biotinidase activity in hepatic glycogen storage disorders-A convenient biomarker
Summary: An elevated serum biotinidase activity in patients with glycogen storage disease (GSD) type Ia has been reported previously. The aim of this work was to investigate the specificity of the phenomenon and thus we expanded the study to other types of hepatic GSDs. Serum biotinidase activity was measured in a total of 68 GSD patients and was compared with that of healthy controls (8.7 ±10; range 7.0-10.6mU/ml; n=6). We found an increased biotinidase activity in patients with GSD Ia (17.7 ±3.9; range: 11.4-24.8; n=21), GSD I non-a (20.9 ±5.6; range 14.6-26.0; n=4), GSD III (12.5 ±-3.6; range 7.8-19.1; n=3), GSD VI (15.4 ±-2.0; range 14.1-17.7; n=) and GSD IX (14.0 ±-3.8; range: 7.5-21.6; n=22). The sensitivity of this test was 100% for patients with GSD Ia, GSD I non-a and GSD VI, 62% for GSD III, and 77% for GSD IX, indicating reduced sensitivity for GSD III and GSD IX, respectively. In addition, we found elevated biotinidase activity in all sera from 5 patients with Fanconi-Bickel Syndrome (15.3 ±-3.7; range 11.0-19.4). Taken together, we propose serum biotinidase as a diagnostic biomarker for hepatic glycogen storage disorder

Chimpanzees combine pant hoots with food calls into larger structures
This work was supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (PP00P3_163850) to S.W.T. and the NCCR Evolving Language (Swiss National Science Foundation Agreement #51NF40_180888).A growing body of observational and experimental data in nonhuman primates has highlighted the presence of rudimentary call combinations within the vocal communication system of monkeys. Such evidence suggests the ability to combine meaning-bearing units into larger structures, a key feature of language also known as syntax, could have its origins rooted within the primate lineage. However, the evolutionary progression of this trait remains ambiguous as evidence for similar combinations in great apes, our closest-living relatives, is sparse and incomplete. In this study, we aimed to bridge this gap by analysing the combinatorial properties of the pant hoot–food call combination in our closest-living relative, the chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes. To systematically investigate the syntactic-like potential of this structure, we adopted three levels of analysis. First, we applied collocation analyses, methods traditionally used in language sciences, to confirm the combination of pant hoots with food calls was not a random co-occurrence, but instead a consistently produced structure. Second, using acoustic analyses, we confirmed pant hoots and food calls comprising the combination were acoustically indistinguishable from the same calls produced in isolation, indicating the pant hoot–food call combination is composed of individually occurring meaning-bearing units, a key criterion of linguistic syntax. Finally, we investigated the context-specific nature of this structure, demonstrating that the call combination was more likely to be produced when feeding on larger patches and when a high-ranking individual joined the feeding party. Together our results converge to provide support for the systematic combination of calls in chimpanzees. We highlight that playback experiments are vital to robustly disentangle both the function this combination might serve and the similarities with combinations of meaning-bearing units (i.e. syntax) in language.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Dysbiosis of skin microbiota with increased fungal diversity is associated with severity of disease in atopic dermatitis
Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial inflammatory skin disease and an altered skin microbiota with an increase of Staphylococcus aureus has been reported. However, the role of fungi remains poorly investigated.
Objectives: We aimed to improve the understanding of the fungal skin microbiota, the mycobiota, in AD in relation to the bacterial colonization.
Methods: Skin swabs of 16 AD patients and 16 healthy controls (HC) from four different skin sites, that is antecubital crease, dorsal neck, glabella and vertex from multiple time points were analysed by DNA sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region 1 (ITS1) and 16S rRNA gene for fungi and bacteria, respectively.
Results: Malassezia spp. were the predominant fungi in all subjects but with a decreased dominance in severe AD patients in favour of non-Malassezia fungi, for example Candida spp. For bacteria, a decrease of Cutibacterium spp. in AD patients in favour of Staphylococcus spp., particularly S. aureus, was observed. Further, both bacterial and fungal community compositions of severe AD patients significantly differed from mild-to-moderate AD patients and HC with the latter two having overall similar microbiota showing some distinctions in bacterial communities.
Conclusions: We conclude that severe AD is associated with a pronounced dysbiosis of the microbiota with increased fungal diversity. Potentially infectious agents, for example Staphylococcus and Candida, were increased in severe AD.

Characterisation of the mycobacterial NER system reveals novel functions of uvrD1 helicase
In this study, we investigated the role of the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway in mycobacterial DNA repair. Mycobacterium smegmatis lacking the NER excinuclease component uvrB, the helicase uvrD1 and a double knock-out lacking both proteins were constructed and their sensitivity to a series of DNA damaging agents wa analysed. As anticipated, the mycobacterial NER system was shown to be involved in the processing of bulky DNA adducts and inter-strand cross-links. In addition, it could be shown to exert a protective effect against oxidising and nitrosating agents. Interestingly, inactivation of uvrB and uvrD1 significantly increased marker integration frequencies in gene conversion assays. This implies that in mycobacteria, which lack the postreplicative mismatch repair system, NER, and particularly the UvrD1 helicase, is involved in the processing of a subset of recombination-associated mismatches
Magnetic Moments of Decuplet Baryons in Light Cone QCD
We calculate the magnetic moments of decuplet baryons containing strange
quarks within the framework of light cone QCD sum rules taking into account the
SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking effects. It is obtained that magnetic moments of
the neutral \sso and \xis0 baryons are mainly determined by the SU(3)
breaking terms. A comparison of our results on the magnetic moments of the

Prevalence of yaws and syphilis in the Ashanti region of Ghana and occurrence of H. ducreyi, herpes simplex virus 1 and herpes simplex virus 2 in skin lesions associated with treponematoses
Yaws affects children in tropical regions, while syphilis primarily affects sexually active adults worldwide. Despite various campaigns towards the eradication of yaws and elimination of syphilis, these two diseases are still present in Ghana. The aetiological agents of both diseases, two Treponema pallidum subspecies, are genetically similar. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of these treponematoses and the occurrence of pathogens causing similar skin lesions in the Ashanti region of Ghana. A point-of-care test was used to determine the seroprevalence of the treponematoses. Both yaws and syphilis were identified in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Multiplex PCR was used to identify treponemes and other pathogens that cause similar skin lesions. The results indicated that the seroprevalences of T. pallidum in individuals with yaws-like and syphilis-like lesions were 17.2% and 10.8%, respectively. Multiplex PCR results showed that 9.1%, 1.8% and 0.9% of yaws-like lesions were positive for Haemophilus ducreyi, herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and T. pallidum respectively. Among syphilis-like lesions, 28.3% were positive for herpes simplex virus -2 (HSV-2) by PCR. To our knowledge, this is the first time HSV-I and HSV-2 have been reported from yaws-like and syphilis-like lesions, respectively, in Ghana. The presence of other organisms apart from T. pallidum in yaws-like and syphilis-like lesions could impede the total healing of these lesions and the full recovery of patients. This may complicate efforts to achieve yaws eradication by 2030 and the elimination of syphilis and warrants updated empirical treatment guidelines for skin ulcer diseases
The Singularity Problem for Space-Times with Torsion
The problem of a rigorous theory of singularities in space-times with torsion
is addressed. We define geodesics as curves whose tangent vector moves by
parallel transport. This is different from what other authors have done,
because their definition of geodesics only involves the Christoffel connection,
though studying theories with torsion. We propose a preliminary definition of
singularities which is based on timelike or null geodesic incompleteness, even
though for theories with torsion the paths of particles are not geodesics. The
study of the geodesic equation for cosmological models with torsion shows that
the definition has a physical relevance. It can also be motivated, as done in
the literature, remarking that the causal structure of a space-time with
torsion does not get changed with respect to general relativity. We then prove
how to extend Hawking's singularity theorem without causality assumptions to
the space-time of the ECSK theory. This is achieved studying the generalized
Raychaudhuri equation in the ECSK theory, the conditions for the existence of
conjugate points and properties of maximal timelike geodesics. Hawking's
theorem can be generalized, provided the torsion tensor obeys some conditions.
Thus our result can also be interpreted as a no-singularity theorem if these
additional conditions are not satisfied. In other words, it turns out that the
occurrence of singularities in closed cosmological models based on the ECSK
theory is less generic than in general relativity. Our work is to be compared
with previous papers in the literature. There are some relevant differences,
because we rely on a different definition of geodesics, we keep the field
equations of the ECSK theory in their original form rather than casting them in
