    Parental investment changes during the growth and development of American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) hatchlings.

    We observed the differential roles of American Redstart parents in caring for their hatchlings over a period of ten days from hatching. To do this, we watched an American Redstart nest every morning for two hours between 6-9AM (except days 1 and 8) after hatching. Our results showed that cumulative brood time was high until day 7, when it is presumed that chicks could regulate their body temperatures independently. In addition, the female brooded more than the male, and the two seemed to contribute equally to feeding. This raises a couple of questions: does the male have extra time that he spends on other activities or is he actually spending more time foraging for bigger insects?     Effects of browsing preferences in White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

    Deer populations have increased in the past thirty years. Increased herbivory has been suspected to impact plant growth and forest regeneration. Examining the impact of deer browsing is an important component of making decisions regarding forest management. We hypothesized that white-tailed deer browsing impacts forest composition, predicting that browsing will create a significant difference in the diameter and abundance of trees, saplings, and woody ground cover species. Our study sites were located on UMBS property in the forests of northern, lower Michigan. We surveyed the count, species, and browse status of woody plants in two study sites containing two parts, one fenced to reduce exposure to deer browsing, the other unfenced. We also conducted a carbon to nitrogen analysis on all woody plant species encountered. In the burn site, we found a significant difference in the diameters of big tooth aspen between the fenced and unfenced areas. In the unburned site, we found significant differences in ground cover composition between the fenced and unfenced areas. We suggest that similar studies be conducted in the future to further investigate the impact of deer browsing on forest communities, in order to protect the regeneration of our forests and to guide decisions about deer population control.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/55045/1/3489.pdfDescription of 3489.pdf : Access restricted to on-site users at the U-M Biological Station

    The large library of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores based on pyrimidine scaffold is discussed in this review. Since the first examples described thirteen years ago, the interest in pyrimidine push-pull NLO chromophores has increased dramatically, especially for second harmonic generation and two photon absorption. More than 130 properly selected chromophores are presented to demonstrate fundamental structure-property relationships and to highlight key applications of pyrimidine-derived materials.V tomto přehledném článku je shrnuto velké množství nelineárně optických chromoforů na bázi pyrimidinu. Za dobu posledních třiceti let se zájem o pyrimidinové push-pull chromofory významně rozšířil, zejména pro jejich druhou harmonickou generaci a dvoufotonovou absorpci.
