    Index-Driven Digitization and Indexation of Historical Archives

    The promise of digitization of historical archives lies in their indexation at the level of contents. Unfortunately, this kind of indexation does not scale, if done manually. In this article we present a method to bootstrap the deployment of a content-based information system for digitized historical archives, relying on historical indexing tools. Commonly prepared to search within homogeneous records when the archive was still current, such indexes were as widespread as they were disconnected, that is to say situated in the very records they were meant to index. We first present a conceptual model to describe and manipulate historical indexing tools. We then introduce a methodological framework for their use in order to guide digitization campaigns and index digitized historical records. Finally, we exemplify the approach with a case study on the indexation system of the X Savi alle Decime in Rialto, a Venetian magistracy in charge for the exaction—and related record keeping—of a tax on real estate in early modern Venice

    S1 stanica, rijeka Po: rukovanje podacima i prikaz podataka

    The technical setting of the mete-oceanographic buoy at site S1 south of the Po River delta is presented. The station was deployed by Istituto di Scienze Marine (ISMAR) of CNR of Bologna, in cooperation with the local Regional Government and Environmental Agencies (ARPA) of E. Romagna, and ADRICOSM. The buoy mooring and data flow architecture is discussed, with some emphasis on the WWW data presentation. The possible integration with other remote stations, data and mete-oceanographic operational activities is also proposed.U radu je predstavljen tehnički postav meteorološko-oceanografske plutače na položaju S1 južno od delte rijeke Po.     The tectonic puzzle of the Messina area (Southern Italy): Insights from new seismic reflection data

    The Messina Strait, that separates peninsular Italy from Sicily, is one of the most seismically active areas of the Mediterranean. The structure and seismotectonic setting of the region are poorly understood, although the area is highly populated and important infrastructures are planned there. New seismic reflection data have identified a number of faults, as well as a crustal scale NE-trending anticline few km north of the strait. These features are interpreted as due to active right-lateral transpression along the north-eastern Sicilian offshore, coexisting with extensional and right-lateral transtensional tectonics in the southern Messina Strait. This complex tectonic network appears to be controlled by independent and overlapping tectonic settings, due to the presence of a diffuse transfer zone between the SE-ward retreating Calabria subduction zone relative to slab advance in the western Sicilian side

    DNA methylation in adolescents with anxiety disorder : a longitudinal study

    Anxiety disorders (AD) typically manifest in children and adolescents and might persist into adulthood. However, there are still few data concerning epigenetic mechanisms associated with onset, persistence or remission of AD over time. We investigated a cohort of adolescents and young adults at baseline (age; 13.19±2.38) and after 5 years and classifed them according to the AD diagnosis and their longitudinal trajectories into 4 groups: (1) Typically Developing Comparisons (TDC; control group, n=14); (2) Incident (AD in the second evaluation only, n=11); (3) Persistent (AD in both evaluations, n=14) and (4) Remittent (AD in the frst evaluation only, n=8). DNA methylation was evaluated with the Infnium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip from saliva samples collected at both evaluations. Gene set enrichment analysis was applied to consider biological pathways. We found decreased DNA methylation in TDC group while the chronic cases of AD presented hypermethylation in central nervous system development pathways. Moreover, we showed that this persistent group also presented hypermethylation while the other three groups were associated with hypomethylation in nervous system development pathway. Incidence and remission groups were associated with increased and decreased methylation in neuron development pathways, respectively. Larger studies are likely to detect specifc genes relevant to AD

    Evidence on the relationship between genetics and mental health are flourishing. However, few studies are evaluating early biomarkers that might link genes, environment, and psychopathology. We aimed to study telomere length (TL) and epigenetic age acceleration (AA) in a cohort of adolescents with and without anxiety disorders (N = 234). We evaluated a representative subsample of participants at baseline and after 5 years (n = 76) and categorized them according to their anxiety disorder diagnosis at both time points: (1) control group (no anxiety disorder, n = 18), (2) variable group (anxiety disorder in one evaluation, n = 38), and (3) persistent group (anxiety disorder at both time points, n = 20). We assessed relative mean TL by real-time quantitative PCR and DNA methylation by Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip. We calculated AA using the Horvath age estimation algorithm and analyzed differences among groups using generalized linear mixed models. The persistent group of anxiety disorder did not change TL over time (p = 0.495). The variable group had higher baseline TL (p = 0.003) but no accelerated TL erosion in comparison to the non-anxiety control group (p = 0.053). Furthermore, there were no differences in AA among groups over time. Our findings suggest that adolescents with chronic anxiety did not change telomere length over time, which could be related to a delay in neuronal development in this period of life

    Microbial community of the deep-sea brine Lake <em>Kryos </em>seawater-brine interface is active below the chaotropicity limit of life as revealed by recovery of mRNA

    Within the complex of deep, hypersaline anoxic lakes (DHALs) of the Mediterranean Ridge we identified a new, unexplored DHAL and named it "Lake Kryos" after a nearby depression. This lake is filled with MgCl2-rich, athalassohaline brine (salinity >470 practical salinity units), presumably formed by the dissolution of Messinian bischofite. Compared to the DHAL Discovery, it contains elevated concentrations of kosmotropic sodium and sulfate ions, which are capable of reducing the net chaotropicily of MgCl2-rich solutions. The brine of Lake Kryos may therefore be biologically permissive at MgCl2 concentrations previously considered incompatible with life. We characterized the microbiology of the seawater-Kryos brine interface and managed to recover mRNA from the 2.27-3.03 M MgCl2 layer (equivalent to 0.747-0.631 water-activity) thereby expanding the established chaotropicity window-for-life. The primary bacterial taxa present there were KB1 candidate division and DHAL-specific group of organisms, distantly related to Desulfohalobium. Two euryarchaeal candidate divisions MSBL1 and HC1, detected in minority in the overlaying layers, accounted for more than 85% of the rRNA-containing archaeal clones analyzed in 2.27-3.03 M MgCl2 layer. These findings shed light on the plausibility of life in highly chaotropic environments, geochemical windows for microbial extremophiles, and have implications for habitability elsewhere in the Solar System
