This paper was presented at the 3rd Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2011), which was held at the Makedonia Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki in Greece. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Thessaly, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute.A number of steady-state simulations of condensation of R134a at mass fluxes G=100 kg m-2s-1 and G=800 kg m-2s-1 inside a square cross section minichannel (Dh=1mm) are here proposed and compared against similar simulations in a circular cross section channel with same diameter. The VOF (Volume Of Fluid) method is used to track the vapour-liquid interface and the effects of interfacial shear stress and surface tension are both taken into account. A uniform wall temperature is fixed as boundary condition. At G=100 kg m-2s-1 the liquid film is assumed laminar and the vapour flow is turbulent; turbulence is handled by a low-Reynolds number form of the standard k-w model (Wilcox, 1998), which was modified in order to suppress the turbulent viscosity inside the liquid phase. At G=800 kg m-2s-1 a low Re form of the SST k-w model (Menter, 1994) has been used for turbulence modeling through both the liquid and vapour phases. Numerical simulations are validated against experimental data. The present paper looks at the effect of surface tension. Its influence on the shape of the vapour-liquid interface provides some heat transfer enhancement in non-circular minichannels. In circular minichannels, the overall effect of surface tension is shown to be not significant. On the contrary, the effect of surface tension in square channels provides a large enhancement at low mass flux

Evolution of Strigamia centipedes (Chilopoda): a first molecular assessment of phylogeny and divergence times

We present a first phylogenetic and temporal framework, with biogeographical insights, for the centipedes of the genus Strigamia, which are widespread predators in the forest soils of the Northern Hemisphere and comprise the evo-devo model species Strigamia maritima. The phylogeny was estimated by different methods of maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference from sequences of two mitochondrial (16S, COI) and two nuclear (18S, 28S) genes, obtained from 16 species from all major areas of the global range of the genus and encompassing most of the overall morphological and ecological diversity. Divergence times were estimated after calibration upon the fossil record of centipedes. We found that major lineages of extant species of Strigamia separated most probably around 60 million years (Ma) ago. The two most diverse lineages diversified during the last 30 Ma and are today segregated geographically, one in Europe and another in Eastern Asia. This latter region hosts a hitherto underestimated richness and anatomical diversity of species, including three still unknown, yet morphologically well distinct species, which are here described as new: Strigamia inthanoni sp. n. from Thailand, Strigamia korsosi sp. n. from the Ryukyu Islands and Strigamia nana sp. n. from Taiwan. The northern European model species S. maritima is more strictly related to the Eastern Asian lineage, from which it most probably separated around 35 Ma ago before the major diversification of the latter

To evaluate the results achieved with the correction of the mechanical axis of lower limbs through acute correction of a distal femur deformity using a hybrid type of external fixation to fixate the fragments. METHODS: 15 knees of 11 patients with deformity in the distal femur extremity were submitted to correction of the frontal angle of the knee because they had either varus or valgus deformity, without displacement in the sagittal plan. The technique involved pre-operative planning, percutaneous osteotomy in the distal femoral metaphysis, acute correction of the angular deformity associated to translation, fixation of the osteotomy using a hybrid external fixator with a modified assembly. Radiographic evaluation was performed in intermediary periods along the six-month period after surgery, with mean clinical follow-up of 17 months. RESULTS: Union was achieved in all of the osteotomies in a mean time of three months. Only one case presented a significant clinical complication represented by a fracture after the fixator was removed, and a new fixator had to be placed. The lateral distal femoral mechanical angle (mLDFA) returned to normal values in 9 of the 15 knees, with a mean of 71.5%. In four extremities, slight residual displacement of the mechanical axis was caused by tibial deformity and one by a varus deformity in the proximal femur extremity. CONCLUSION: The technique of correcting the displacement in the distal segment of the femur using distal osteotomy offset by the fragment translation was adequate to recover the mechanical axis of the lower limb, and the hybrid external fixator with the modified assembly was efficient to maintain the acute corrections achieved by the surgery and to provide for bone union

Senior citizens deserve better attention from society and professionals in general due to their physical and emotional difficulties. Indifference, prejudice and disregard toward senior citizens may start in the family and then spread into the society they live in, creating an erroneous image of invalidity and senility. Indifference toward their abilities bring out problems such as depression and low self-esteem. Leisure activities in groups can be one way to reduce these feelings of loneliness and sedentary life, improving their quality life. The act of reading , in many cases, help individuals acquire knowledge, express their feelings, develop their intelligence and improve their social life. The act of reading can also be included in projects that develop inter- generation relationships, promoting an exchange of experiences. As a social agent, the librarian must focus their attention in activities and functions on developing senor citizens readers since initiatives like this in Brazil are scarce

This paper was presented at the 4th Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2014), which was held at University College, London, UK. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute, ASME Press, LCN London Centre for Nanotechnology, UCL University College London, UCL Engineering, the International NanoScience Community, www.nanopaprika.eu.This study moves from the need to study flow boiling of zeotropic mixture in microchannels. In the recent years much attention has been paid to the possible use of fluorinated propene isomers for the substitution of high-GWP refrigerants. The available HFOs (hydrofluoroolefins) cannot cover all the air-conditioning, heat pump, and refrigeration systems when used as pure fluids because their thermodynamic properties are not suitable for all operating conditions and therefore some solutions may be found using blends of refrigerants, to satisfy the demand for a wide range of working conditions. In the present paper a mixture of R1234ze(E) and R32 (0.5/0.5 by mass) has been studied. The local heat transfer coefficient during flow boiling of this mixture in a single microchannel with 0.96 mm diameter is measured at a pressure of 14 bar, which corresponds to a bubble temperature of 26.3°C. The flow boiling data taken in the present test section are discussed, with particular regard to the effect of heat flux, mass velocity and vapor quality. The heat transfer coefficients are compared against some predicting models available in the literature. Furthermore, the new experimental data are compared to flow boiling data of pure R1234ze(E) and pure R32 to analyze the heat transfer penalization due to the mass transfer resistance of this zeotropic mixture
