    The objective of this technical report is to establish a measurement procedure and/or measurement protocol in order to characterize the electromagnetic, electric and/or magnetic field sources at the workplaces, particularly in hospitals and in medical environmental. In this particular cases the exposure to electromagnetic fields involve workers, in-patients and their parents, and the devices and medical equipments. For the workers case we refer on the D.Lgs 81/2008 which acknowledges the European Directive 2004/40/EC on the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risks arising from physical agents (electromagnetic fields). For the in-patients the risk-benefit evaluation for exposure to electromagnetic fields is to advantage of benefit, except particular situations. For the parents of the in-patients we apply the standard fixed by the italian law (DPCM 8 Luglio 2003 “Fissazione dei limiti di esposizione, dei valori di attenzione e degli obiettivi di qualità per la protezione della popolazione dalle esposizioni a campi elettrici, magnetici ed elettromagnetici generati a frequenze comprese fra 100 kHz e 300 GHz”) For the devices and the medical equipments we refer to the CEI EN 60601-1-2. The standard fixes the electromagnetic immunity limits to 10 V/m for life-supporting equipments and systems and to 3 V/m for no life-supporting equipments and systems An instrument device for hyperthermia (Delta, Easytech Srl) has been chose as case-study for test the proposed measurement procedure. This instrument device is used in medical environmental to treatment of the pathologies of the locomotor apparatus. Its operating frequency is in ISM band (433.05÷434.79 MHz)

    NEW LIGHT ON PARASOREX DEPERETI (ERINACEOMORPHA: ERINACEIDAE: GALERICINI) FROM THE LATE MESSINIAN (MN 13) OF THE MONTICINO QUARRY (BRISIGHELLA, FAENZA, ITALY)

    A large-sized species of Parasorex is common in the MN 13 mammal assemblages from the uppermost Messinian sandy-marly fissure fillings within the Gessoso Solfifera Formation at Brisighella (Northern Apennine). This erinaceid has been classified as Galerix sp. in the first papers on the Brisighella fauna. Later, it was described in detail in an unpublished Ph.D. dissertation by Fanfani (1999), who referred it to Galerix depereti. Van den Hoek Ostende (2001) included G. depereti in the genus Parasorex, Parasorex depereti has been described by Crochet (1986) on scarce material from a few Early Pliocene (MN 14–15) localities of southern France and Spain. Parasorex cf. depereti has been reported from the Early Pliocene fauna of Capo Mannu (Mandriola, Sardinia; Furió and Angelone 2010). The species seems actually distributed in south-western Europe, where it represents the youngest occurrence of the genus Parasorex. The very abundant sample of P. depereti from fissure filling BRS 25 enables a more accurate and comprehensive description of the species. It also permits inspection of the mesial elements of the dentition, which were lacking in the material examined by Crochet (1986). The systematic position of the species has been revisited and compared with those of other Galericini of the Parasorex group

    Critical speed estimated by statistically appropriate fitting procedures.

    Intensity domains are recommended when prescribing exercise. The distinction between heavy and severe domains is made by the critical speed (CS), therefore requiring a mathematically accurate estimation of CS. The different model variants (distance versus time, running speed versus time, time versus running speed, and distance versus running speed) are mathematically equivalent. Nevertheless, error minimization along the correct axis is important to estimate CS and the distance that can be run above CS (d'). We hypothesized that comparing statistically appropriate fitting procedures, which minimize the error along the axis corresponding to the properly identified dependent variable, should provide similar estimations of CS and d' but that different estimations should be obtained when comparing statistically appropriate and inappropriate fitting procedure. Sixteen male runners performed a maximal incremental aerobic test and four exhaustive runs at 90, 100, 110, and 120% of their peak speed on a treadmill. Several fitting procedures (a combination of a two-parameter model variant and regression analysis: weighted least square) were used to estimate CS and d'. Systematic biases (P < 0.001) were observed between each pair of fitting procedures for CS and d', even when comparing two statistically appropriate fitting procedures, though negligible, thus corroborating the hypothesis. The differences suggest that a statistically appropriate fitting procedure should be chosen beforehand by the researcher. This is also important for coaches that need to prescribe training sessions to their athletes based on exercise intensity, and their choice should be maintained over the running seasons

    HERG potassium channels are more frequently expressed in human endometrial cancer as compared to non-cancerous endometrium

    HERG K+channels, besides contributing to regulate cardiac and neuronal excitability, are preferentially expressed in tumour cell lines of different histogenesis, where their role in the development and maintenance of the neoplastic phenotype is under study. We show here that both herg gene and HERG protein are expressed with high frequency in primary human endometrial cancers, as compared to normal and hyperplastic endometrium. RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, using specific anti-HERG antibodies developed in our laboratory, were applied to tissue specimens obtained from 18 endometrial cancers and 11 non-cancerous endometrial tissues. herg RNA and HERG protein are expressed in 67% and 82%, respectively, of cancerous, while in only 18% of non-cancerous tissues. In particular, no expression was found in endometrial hyperplasia. Moreover, electrophysiological experiments confirmed the presence of functioning HERG channels on the plasma membrane of tumour cells. On the whole, these data are the first demonstration of the presence of HERG channels in primary human neoplasias, and could candidate HERG as a potential tool capable of marking cancerous versus hyperplastic endometrial growth. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

    Mechanisms of attenuation of pulmonary V'O_{2} slow component in humans after prolonged endurance training

    In this study we have examined the effect of prolonged endurance training program on the pulmonary oxygen uptake (V'O2 ) kinetics during heavy-intensity cycling-exercise and its impact on maximal cycling and running performance. Twelve healthy, physically active men (mean\ub1SD: age 22.33\ub11.44 years, V'O2peak 3198\ub1458 mL \ub7 min-1 ) performed an endurance training composed mainly of moderate-intensity cycling, lasting 20 weeks. Training resulted in a decrease (by 3c5%, P = 0.027) in V'O2 during prior low-intensity exercise (20 W) and in shortening of \u3c4 p of the V'O2 on-kinetics (30.1\ub15.9 s vs. 25.4\ub11.5 s, P = 0.007) during subsequent heavy-intensity cycling. This was accompanied by a decrease of the slow component of V'O2 on-kinetics by 49% (P = 0.001) and a decrease in the end-exercise V'O2 by 3c5% (P = 0.005). An increase (P = 0.02) in the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 mRNA level and a tendency (P = 0.06) to higher capillary-to-fiber ratio in the vastus lateralis muscle were found after training (n = 11). No significant effect of training on the V'O2peak was found (P = 0.12). However, the power output reached at the lactate threshold increased by 19% (P = 0.01). The power output obtained at the V'O2peak increased by 14% (P = 0.003) and the time of 1,500-m performance decreased by 5% (P = 0.001). Computer modeling of the skeletal muscle bioenergetic system suggests that the training-induced decrease in the slow component of V'O2 on-kinetics found in the present study is mainly caused by two factors: an intensification of the each-step activation (ESA) of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complexes after training and decrease in the "additional" ATP usage rising gradually during heavy-intensity exercise
