Quantum storage of polarization qubits in birefringent and anisotropically absorbing materials
Storage of quantum information encoded into true single photons is an
essential constituent of long-distance quantum communication based on quantum
repeaters and of optical quantum information processing. The storage of
photonic polarization qubits is, however, complicated by the fact that many
materials are birefringent and have polarization-dependent absorption. Here we
present and demonstrate a simple scheme that allows compensating for these
polarization effects. The scheme is demonstrated using a solid-state quantum
memory implemented with an ensemble of rare-earth ions doped into a biaxial
yttrium orthosilicate () crystal. Heralded single photons generated
from a filtered spontaneous parametric downconversion source are stored, and
quantum state tomography of the retrieved polarization state reveals an average
fidelity of , which is significantly higher than what is

Image transmission through a stable paraxial cavity
We study the transmission of a monochromatic "image" through a paraxial
cavity. Using the formalism of self-transform functions, we show that a
transverse degenerate cavity transmits the self-transform part of the image,
with respect to the field transformation over one round-trip of the cavity.
This formalism gives a new insight on the understanding of the behavior of a
transverse degenerate cavity, complementary to the transverse mode picture. An
experiment of image transmission through a hemiconfocal cavity show the

Observation of a non-adiabatic geometric phase for elastic waves
We report the experimental observation of a geometric phase for elastic waves
in a waveguide with helical shape. The setup reproduces the experiment by
Tomita and Chiao [A. Tomita, R.Y. Chiao, Phys. Rev. Lett. 57 (1986) 937-940,
2471] that showed first evidence of a Berry phase, a geometric phase for
adiabatic time evolution, in optics. Experimental evidence of a non-adiabatic
geometric phase has been reported in quantum mechanics. We have performed an
experiment to observe the polarization transport of classical elastic waves. In
a waveguide, these waves are polarized and dispersive. Whereas the wavelength
is of the same order of magnitude as the helix's radius, no frequency dependent
correction is necessary to account for the theoretical prediction. This shows
that in this regime, the geometric phase results directly from geometry and not
from a correction to an adiabatic phase.Comment: 13 figure
Liquid state properties from first principles DFT calculations: Static properties
In order to test the Vibration-Transit (V-T) theory of liquid dynamics, ab
initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of thermodynamic properties
of Na and Cu are performed and compared with experimental data. The
calculations are done for the crystal at T = 0 and T_m, and for the liquid at
T_m. The key theoretical quantities for crystal and liquid are the structural
potential and the dynamical matrix, both as function of volume. The theoretical
equations are presented, as well as details of the DFT computations. The
properties compared with experiment are the equilibrium volume, the isothermal
bulk modulus, the internal energy and the entropy. The agreement of theory with
experiment is uniformly good. Our primary conclusion is that the application of
DFT to V-T theory is feasible, and the resulting liquid calculations achieve
the same level of accuracy as does ab initio lattice dynamics for crystals.
Moreover, given the well established reliability of DFT, the present results

Familial adhesive arachnoiditis associated with syringomyelia
Adhesive arachnoiditis is a rare condition, often complicated by syringomyelia. This pathologic entity is usually associated with prior spinal surgery, spinal inflammation or infection, and hemorrhage. The usual symptoms of arachnoiditis are pain, paresthesia, and weakness of the low extremities due to the nerve entrapment. A few cases have had no obvious etiology. Previous studies have reported one family with multiple cases of adhesive arachnoiditis. We report a second family of Belgian origin with multiple cases of arachnoiditis and secondary syringomyelia in the affected individuals
Clinical management of financial toxicity - identifying opportunities through experiential insights of cancer survivors, caregivers, and social workers
Perspectives of cancer survivors, caregivers, and social workers as key stakeholders on the clinical management of financial toxicity (FT) are critical to identify opportunities for better FT management. Semi-structured interviews (cancer survivors, caregivers) and a focus group (social workers) were undertaken using purposive sampling at a quaternary public hospital in Australia. People with any cancer diagnosis attending the hospital were eligible. Data were analysed using inductive-deductive content analysis techniques. Twenty-two stakeholders (n = 10 cancer survivors of mixed-cancer types, n = 5 caregivers, and n = 7 social workers) participated. Key findings included: (i) genuine concern for FT of cancer survivors and caregivers shown through practical support by health care and social workers; (ii) need for clarity of role and services; (iii) importance of timely information flow; and (iv) proactive navigation as a priority. While cancer survivors and caregivers received financial assistance and support from the hospital, the lack of synchronised, shared understanding of roles and services in relation to finance between cancer survivors, caregivers, and health professionals undermined the effectiveness and consistency of these services. A proactive approach to anticipate cancer survivors’ and caregivers’ needs is recommended. Future research may develop and evaluate initiatives to manage cancer survivors and families FT experiences and outcomes
General formulation of digital in-line holography from correlation with a chirplet function
Self-structuring of lamellar bridged silsesquioxanes with long side spacers
Diurea cross-linked bridged silsesquioxanes (BSs) C(10)C(11)C(10) derived from organosilane precursors, including decylene chains as side spacers and alkylene chains with variable length as central spacers (EtO)(3)Si- (CH(2))(10)-Y(CH(2))(n)-Y-(CH(2))(10)-Si(OEt)(3) (n = 7, 9-12; Y = urea group and Et = ethyl), have been synthesized through the combination of self-directed assembly and an acid-catalyzed sol gel route involving the addition of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and a large excess of water. This new family of hybrids has enabled us to conclude that the length of the side spacers plays a unique role in the structuring of alkylene-based BSs, although their morphology remains unaffected. All the samples adopt a lamellar structure. While the alkylene chains are totally disordered in the case of the C(10)C(7)C(10) sample, a variable proportion of all-trans and gauche conformers exists in the materials with longer central spacers. The highest degree of structuring occurs for n = 9. The inclusion of decylene instead of propylene chains as side spacers leads to the formation of a stronger hydrogen-bonded urea-urea array as evidenced by two dimensional correlation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis. The emission spectra and emission quantum yields of the C(10)C(n)C(10) Cm materials are similar to those reported for diurea cross-linked alkylene-based BSs incorporating propylene chains as side spacers and prepared under different experimental conditions. The emission of the C(10)C(n)C(10) hybrids is ascribed to the overlap of two distinct components that occur within the urea cross-linkages and within the siliceous nanodomains. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy has provided evidence that the average distance between the siliceous domains and the urea cross-links is similar in the C(10)C(n)C(10) BSs and in oxyethylene-based hybrid analogues incorporating propylene chains as side spacers (diureasils), an indication that the longer side chains in the former materials adopt gauche conformations. It has also allowed us to demonstrate for the first time that the emission features of the urea-related component of the emission of alkylene-based BSs depend critically on the length of the side spacers
