‘And Bloodshed Must Be Done’: Heavy metal and neo-Nazism in Greece

This article explores the genealogy of the relationship between the discourses promoted in the heavy metal music press and neo-Nazi publications in Greece since the 1980s. It aims to show that the proliferation of neo-Nazi ideologies and practices in Greece after 2008 was not simply a result of the – on-going – financial crisis; rather, its seeds had been planted during the 1980s and particularly in the 1990s. We shall illustrate how this connection resulted from a conscious decision taken by key neo-Nazi groups and explore how the cultivation of such relationships gradually led to the further dissemination of neo-Nazi discourse within the mainstream heavy metal music press

Preliminary report on the extraction of hydrocarbons in Epirus

Η περιοχή της Ηπείρου έχει έρθει στο προσκήνιο της επικαιρότητας τόσο στην Ελλάδα όσο και πανευρωπαϊκά τον τελευταίο καιρό λόγω της έναρξης ερευνών για υδρογονάνθρακες στο πλαίσιο συμβάσεων έρευνας και εξόρυξης που υπέγραψε το ελληνικό δημόσιο με ιδιωτικές εταιρείες εξόρυξης υδρογονανθράκων. Μεγάλο μέρος των κατοίκων διαμαρτύρεται και δραστηριοποιείται ενάντια στις εξορύξεις (βλ. πορεία διαμαρτυρίας 2.000 ατόμων στις 3 Ιουνίου του 2018 άλλα και την ανάλογη πορεία διαμαρτυρίας του Μάιου του 2019 στα Ιωάννινα καθώς και μια σειρά πρωτοβουλιών ενάντια στις εξορύξεις τόσο τοπικά όσο και πανελλαδικά). Από την άλλη πλευρά, μεγάλο κομμάτι επίσημων φορέων (Περιφέρεια Ηπείρου, κεντρική κυβέρνηση, Ακαδημία Αθηνών κ.λπ.) καθώς και μια ομολογουμένως μικρή μερίδα κατοίκων προτείνουν την εξόρυξη ως αναπτυξιακή λύση στη χρόνια οικονομική υποανάπτυξη της Ηπείρου όπως διαγράφεται με βάση το κατά κεφαλήν ΑΕΠ. Ακολουθώντας αυτήν τη μέτρηση, η ιστοσελίδα της Περιφέρειας Ηπείρου περιγράφοντας τη φυσιογνωμία της περιφέρειας αναφέρει ότι είναι η φτωχότερη της Ελλάδας. Στο πλαίσιο όλης αυτής της συζήτησης, στο παρόν κείμενο έχουμε δύο στόχους: Α) Να κατανοήσουμε κατά πόσο οι ανησυχίες των κατοίκων για τις εξορύξεις είναι βάσιμες˙ και Β) Να προβούμε σε μια πρώτη απόπειρα κατανόησης του αναπτυξιακού πολιτικού πλαισίου όπως λαμβάνει χώρα στην Ήπειρο σε σχέση με την εξόρυξη υδρογονανθράκων μέσα από τις μεταβολές στη διεθνή θεωρία και πρακτική της ανάπτυξης. Για να απαντήσουμε στο πρώτο ερώτημα θα εξετάσουμε εν συντομία τη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία σχετικά με τις εξορυκτική οικονομία, το υπάρχον μητρώο μίας εκ των εμπλεκομένων εταιρειών εξόρυξης κτλ. Για να απαντήσουμε στο δεύτερο ερώτημα θα παρουσιάσουμε μια σειρά σύγχρονων προσεγγίσεων που επικρατούν σήμερα στην επιστήμη της ανάπτυξης και στην πρακτική της εφαρμογή και θα τις συγκρίνουμε με τις επίσημες πολιτικές απόψεις περί υποανάπτυξης της Ηπείρου

Radical social innovations and the spatialities of grassroots activism: navigating pathways for tackling inequality and reinventing the commons

In this article, by drawing on empirical evidence from twelve case studies from nine countries from across the Global South and North, we ask how radical grassroots social innovations that are part of social movements and struggles can offer pathways for tackling socio-spatial and socio-environmental inequality and for reinventing the commons. We define radical grassroots social innovations as a set of practices initiated by formal or informal community-led initiatives or/and social movements which aim to generate novel, democratic, socially, spatially and environmentally just solutions to address social needs that are otherwise ignored or marginalised. To address our research questions, we draw on the work of Cindi Katz to explore how grassroots innovations relate to practices of resilience, reworking and resistance. We identify possibilities and limitations as well as patterns of spatial practices and pathways of re-scaling and radical praxis, uncovering broadly-shared resemblances across different places. Through this analysis we aim to make a twofold contribution to political ecology and human geography scholarship on grassroots radical activism, social innovation and the spatialities of resistance. First, to reveal the connections between social-environmental struggles, emerging grassroots innovations and broader structural factors that cause, enable or limit them. Second, to explore how grassroots radical innovations stemming from place-based community struggles can relate to resistance practices that would not only successfully oppose inequality and the withering of the commons in the short-term, but would also open long-term pathways to alternative modes of social organization, and a new commons, based on social needs and social rights that are currently unaddressed
