The taxonomy of Echinochaete and Polyporus s. str. in southern South America
Taxonomic characters of the genera Echinochaete and Polyporus s. str. from southern South America are summarized based on examination of 350 collections, including 88 holotypes from different herbaria. The research revealed one species of Echinochaete and nineteen species and one variety of Polyporus s. str. representing four established subgenera (Polyporus, Melanopus, Polyporellus, Favolus). and the new subgenus, Austropolyporus, proposed here to accommodate P. gayanus. Pseudofavolus is considered a synonym of Polyporus s. str. Polyporus arcularioides is accepted as a separate taxon. Polyporus brumalis was not found in the area studied. Polyporus saltensis, considered an autonomous taxon, differs from P. tenuiculus in lacking clamp connections. Polyporus tucumanensis is recognized as a separate species distinct from P. ciliatus. Polyporus maculatissimus, usually considered within Polyporus s. str., belongs in Neolentiporus.Fil:Borges Da Silveira, R.M. Universidad de Buenos Aires. 2-(2-Methyl-2-nitrovinyl)furan but Not Furvina Interfere with Staphylococcus aureus Agr Quorum-Sensing System and Potentiate the Action of Fusidic Acid against Biofilms
Quorum sensing (QS) plays an essential role in the production of virulence factors, in biofilm formation and antimicrobial resistance. Consequently, inhibiting QS is being considered a promising target for antipathogenic/anti-virulence therapies. This study aims to screen 2-nitrovinylfuran derivatives structurally related to Furvina (a broad-spectrum antibiotic already used for therapeutic purposes) for their effects on QS and in biofilm prevention/control. Furvina and four 2-nitrovinylfuran derivatives (compounds 1-4) were tested to assess the ability to interfere with QS of Staphylococcus aureus using bioreporter strains (S. aureus ALC1742 and ALC1743). The activity of Furvina and the most promising quorum-sensing inhibitor (QSI) was evaluated in biofilm prevention and in biofilm control (combined with fusidic acid). The biofilms were further characterized in terms of biofilm mass, viability and membrane integrity. Compound 2 caused the most significant QS inhibition with reductions between 60% and 80%. Molecular docking simulations indicate that this compound interacts preferentially with the protein hydrophobic cleft in the LytTR domain of AgrA pocket. Metabolic inactivations of 40% for S. aureus ALC1742 and 20% for S. aureus ALC1743 were reached. A 24 h-old biofilm formed in the presence of the QSI increased the metabolic inactivation by fusidic acid to 80%, for both strains. The overall results highlight the effects of compound 2 as well as the potential of combining QSI with in-use antibiotics for the management of skin and soft tissues infections
Aerofotos convencionais e imagens orbitais TM/LANDSAT no mapeamento morfopedológico em Santa Bárbara D'Oeste (SP)
Using aerial photographs quantitative and qualitative parameters of drainage patterns and landscape were studied in an area located in Santa Barbara D'Oeste,SP. This area has 14,625 ha, represented by the following simple map units or associations: Dark Red Latosols; Red Yellow Podzoh'c associated with some Lithosols; Dusky Latosol associated with "Terra Roxa Estruturada" (a Rodudal). Sampling areas were selected according to third order river ramification and circles of 5 km². After físiographic characterization of these soils, two land system maps were selected. The first using vertical pancromatic aerial photographs in the scale of 1:35,000 (25/6/78) and the second, using orbital images of "Thematic Mapper" of LANDSAT-5 sensor, on 3,4 and 5 bands and color composition 3/4/5 in the scale of 1:100,000 (12/9/91). The landscape analysis (slope index) and drainage patterns (drainage density, river frequency and texture ratio) were efficient for identification of the soil mapping units in both cases, watershed and circular sampling. Aerial photograph usage permited also greater detail in the definition of mapping units, in relation to orbital images. The color composition 3/4/5 allowed the differentiation of clay Latosols from medium texture Latosols and from Ilumic Latosols.
Land use was studied in Santa Bárbara D'Oeste,SP in an area of 14,625 ha. Two land use mappings were made using pancromatic aerial photographs (date 25/6/78), in a scale of 1:35,000 and orbital images from LANDSAT-5 satellite (date 12/8/91) in a scale 1:100,000, at bands 3, 4 and 5 and color composition 3/4/5. Interpretation keys for aerial photos and orbital images were established to assist map making. For land use identification photos presented more details. On the other hand, orbital images at band 3 and color composition 3/4/5 were more efficient in relation to the other bands. Sugar cane crop area did not change in the studied period (1978-1991), forest and pasture areas had a reduction and urban areas increased. Using the land capability classification, most of the studied area feU in class IV: land more appropriate for pasture or perennial crops like sugar cane, with the need of intensive conservation managements technics, with agricultural practices based on high technological levels
Uso De Filtros De Carvão Ativado Granular Associado A Microrganismos Para Remoção De Fármacos No Tratamento De água De Abastecimento
The way of life of modern societies has originated the daily intake of pharmaceuticals and numerous other molecules of continuous use in aquatic environments, emerging compounds that brings potential risk for human health mainly due to exposure resulted from the inevitable contamination of sources of drinking water supply and its transference to the water treatment plants (WTP) where they are not removed. The use of granular activated carbon in filters proves to be a viable option for WTP, but satisfactory efficiency requires periodic regeneration of the material, burdening the treatment costs. However, it is noted that under low filtration rates, the natural colonization of filters by microorganisms — biofilm formation — may be an alternative for increasing the lifetime of carbon, as well as to decompose these complex molecules into assimilable mineral elements, thereby reintroducing them to the natural biogeochemical cycles. This study evaluated the activated carbon with biofilm as the filter media, during 24 weeks, under laboratory conditions, considering the removal of the pharmaceuticals diclofenac sodium, ibuprofen, naproxen and amoxicillin; experienced under batch system the potential of the microorganisms adhering to the filters in degrade the tested drugs, as well as phylogenetically identified the predominant microorganisms in biodegradation. The results show drug removal over 80%. It was observed the presence of the bacteria genus Bacillus, Burkholderia, Cupriavidus, Pseudomonas, Shinella and Sphingomonas. This study allows us to infer the capacity to remove pharmaceuticals by the bacteria present in the activated carbon filters, and the possible use of this technology as an alternative for control and removal of these substances in drinking water treatment. © 2016, ABES - Associacao Brasileira de Engenharia Sanitaria e Ambiental. Magneto-transport and magnetic susceptibility of SmFeAsO1-xFx (x = 0.0 and 0.20)
Bulk polycrystalline samples, SmFeAsO and the iso-structural superconducting
SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 are explored through resistivity with temperature under
magnetic field {\rho}(T, H), AC and DC magnetization (M-T), and Specific heat
(Cp) measurements. The Resistivity measurement shows superconductivity for x =
0.20 sample with Tc(onset) ~ 51.7K. The upper critical field, [Hc2(0)] is
estimated ~3770kOe by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Broadening of
superconducting transition in magneto transport is studied through thermally
activated flux flow in applied field up to 130 kOe. The flux flow activation
energy (U/kB) is estimated ~1215K for 1kOe field. Magnetic measurements
exhibited bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of ~1.2kOe at
2K. In normal state, the paramagnetic nature of compound confirms no trace of
magnetic impurity which orders ferromagnetically. AC susceptibility
measurements have been carried out for SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 sample at various
amplitude and frequencies of applied AC drive field. The inter-granular
critical current density (Jc) is estimated. Specific heat [Cp(T)] measurement
showed an anomaly at around 140K due to the SDW ordering of Fe, followed by
another peak at 5K corresponding to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of
Sm+3 ions in SmFeAsO compound. Interestingly the change in entropy (marked by
the Cp transition height) at 5K for Sm+3 AFM ordering is heavily reduced in
case of superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 sample.Comment: 18 pages text + Figs: comments/suggestions welcome
