    Get PDF
In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of lesson study, a professional development model, on the perceptions of middle school mathematics teachers about subject area competencies and the views of the teachers about this model. In this study, which was conducted with a qualitative research method, the data were collected through semi-structured interviews from the middle school mathematics teachers after three lesson-research-cycles. The descriptive analysis of the data presented some findings: a) identification/determination of Mathematics Subject Area Competencies (MSAC) while preparing and applying a lesson plan, b) being able to use their knowledge of mathematics, c) developments of the students’ mathematical skills through groupwork and d) a more active teaching process with Lesson Study (LS). On the other hand, it was also seen that there are some negative findings showing that preparing a detailed lesson plan is troublesome and the teachers have difficulty in coming together and using the technology. In this context, it is believed that this study will enlighten the researchers who are interested in LS method to learn about the subject area competencies of teachers from different branches, to learn about the effect of mathematics teachers' general competencies related to teaching profession on teaching and about teachers' technological competencies.  Article visualizations

BodyScan: Enabling Radio-based Sensing on Wearable Devices for Contactless Activity and Vital Sign Monitoring

Wearable devices are increasingly becoming mainstream consumer products carried by millions of consumers. However, the potential impact of these devices is currently constrained by fundamental limitations of their built-in sensors. In this paper, we introduce radio as a new powerful sensing modality for wearable devices and propose to transform radio into a mobile sensor of human activities and vital signs. We present BodyScan, a wearable system that enables radio to act as a single modality capable of providing whole-body continuous sensing of the user. BodyScan overcomes key limitations of existing wearable devices by providing a contactless and privacy-preserving approach to capturing a rich variety of human activities and vital sign information. Our prototype design of BodyScan is comprised of two components: one worn on the hip and the other worn on the wrist, and is inspired by the increasingly prevalent scenario where a user carries a smartphone while also wearing a wristband/smartwatch. This prototype can support daily usage with one single charge per day. Experimental results show that in controlled settings, BodyScan can recognize a diverse set of human activities while also estimating the user's breathing rate with high accuracy. Even in very challenging real-world settings, BodyScan can still infer activities with an average accuracy above 60% and monitor breathing rate information a reasonable amount of time during each day

This dissertation seeks to contribute to current studies of minority cultures in Germany by examining dramatic works and staged performances by Turkish-German artists. As the first comprehensive study of its kind, it offers an overview of the forty-year-history of Turkish-German theater and cabaret with reference to the socio-cultural and economic conditions of its development and examines plays and performances with regard to influences, motives, and narrative strategies. In particular, I explore the following issues: the process of creating a space within the German culture scene; the tension between traditions and experimental innovation; the staging of identities and the performance of ethnicities in drama and theater; the strategies of expressing oneself in a foreign idiom, thereby creating a 'new' language; and the reaction of the mainstream German audience to Turkish-German cultural expressions

INVESTIGATION OF ALUMINUM TOXICITY AMONG WORKERS IN ALUMINUM INDUSTRY SECTOR

    Get PDF
The study was conducted to evaluate urine aluminum concentration among a total of 150 participants (80 aluminum technicians and 70 non- aluminum technicians as a control). Data were collected through a previously prepared questionnaire which consists of two parts. The first part concerned with demographic data such as age and nationality. The second part concerned with occupational data such as working hours, working years, smoking, and diseases. The mean concentration of aluminum is 51.62+ 29.59 μg/l and the mean concentration of group control 16.32 + 12.49 μg/l. The following variables were associated significantly with aluminum concentration: age, weekly working hours, smoking and daily smoking packets.According to our study, aluminum workers have high concentrations of urine aluminum compared with other studies, in addition to that the incidence of diseases in relation to exposure is low, simply because: 1-Self reported questionnaires may be not a proper way to collect data about diseases. 2- Traditional surveillance approaches used in public health practice are difficult to apply to metals poisoning because adverse health effects related to metal exposure may not be clinically diagnosed, except at very high exposure levels, and are not usually listed as reportable diseases. Finally Special safety precautions and educational programs are also needed to limit the aluminum exposure in this industrial group

Archaea catalyze iron-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane

    Get PDF
Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is crucial for controlling the emission of this potent greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. Nitrite-, nitrate-, and sulfate-dependent methane oxidation is well-documented, but AOM coupled to the reduction of oxidized metals has so far been demonstrated only in environmental samples. Here, using a freshwater enrichment culture, we show that archaea of the order Methanosarcinales, related to “Candidatus Methanoperedens nitroreducens,” couple the reduction of environmentally relevant forms of Fe^(3+) and Mn^(4+) to the oxidation of methane. We obtained an enrichment culture of these archaea under anaerobic, nitrate-reducing conditions with a continuous supply of methane. Via batch incubations using [^(13)C]methane, we demonstrated that soluble ferric iron (Fe^(3+), as Fe-citrate) and nanoparticulate forms of Fe^(3+) and Mn^(4+) supported methane-oxidizing activity. CO_2 and ferrous iron (Fe^(2+)) were produced in stoichiometric amounts. Our study connects the previous finding of iron-dependent AOM to microorganisms detected in numerous habitats worldwide. Consequently, it enables a better understanding of the interaction between the biogeochemical cycles of iron and methane

Article presents the problem of the approach to the analysis of electrical field distribution in the model insulating system, which, in the author's experimental research, was used to the assessment of the influence of paper insulation on the mechanism of electrical discharge initiation in mineral oil. The main assumptions of the planned numerical works based on the finite element method were described and scientific aim of the numerical analysis were characterized in this paper. Both the assumptions and the scientific aim were related to the conclusions from the experimental works, especially to the measured times to initiation of the discharges developing in mineral transformer oil, indicating on the important role of the oil quality in the process of discharge initiation in the system of the insulated by paper electrodes immersed in oil
