A test of the standard dark matter density evolution law using galaxy clusters and cosmic chronometers
In this letter, we implement a test of the standard law for the dark matter
density evolution. For this purpose, only a flat universe and the validity of
the FRW metric are assumed. A deformed dark matter density evolution law is
considered, given by , and constraints on
are obtained by using galaxy cluster gas mass fractions, and cosmic
chronometers measurements. We find that within 2 c.l., in

Evaluation of petroleum based horticulture oil for the management of the tea red spider mite, Oligonychus coffeae Neitner (Acarina: Tetranychidae)
The Servo agro spray oil (petroleum based horticulture oil) was evaluated in the laboratory against tea red spider mite, Oligonychus coffeae to determine its effect on adult mortality, viability of eggs, oviposition deterrence and repellent properties. The same was also evaluated in the field to determine its effect on mite population. Direct spray method was used in the laboratory at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5%. Mortality of O. coffeae was both concentration and time dependent. Deposition of eggs by adult mites on treated leaf surfaces decreased significantly and the viability of eggs was also significantly reduced. In addition, different concentrations of the Servo agro spray also exhibited repellent properties against adult mites. In the field Servo agro spray oil significantly reduced the mite population and its bio-efficacy was comparable to that of the synthetic pesticide (propargite 57 EC). No phytotoxic effect was observed when tea bushes were sprayed with different doses of Servo agro spray. Tea samples were taint free. Quality (appearance of liquor, flavour, taint and taste) of made tea was not adversely affected by treatments with Servo agro spray oil. Therefore Servo agro spray oil may be a potential agent to be used in the sustainable management of tea red spider mite
Comparative performance of some popular ANN algorithms on benchmark and function approximation problems
We report an inter-comparison of some popular algorithms within the
artificial neural network domain (viz., Local search algorithms, global search
algorithms, higher order algorithms and the hybrid algorithms) by applying them
to the standard benchmarking problems like the IRIS data, XOR/N-Bit parity and
Two Spiral. Apart from giving a brief description of these algorithms, the
results obtained for the above benchmark problems are presented in the paper.
The results suggest that while Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm yields the lowest
RMS error for the N-bit Parity and the Two Spiral problems, Higher Order
Neurons algorithm gives the best results for the IRIS data problem. The best
results for the XOR problem are obtained with the Neuro Fuzzy algorithm. The
above algorithms were also applied for solving several regression problems such
as cos(x) and a few special functions like the Gamma function, the
complimentary Error function and the upper tail cumulative
-distribution function. The results of these regression problems
indicate that, among all the ANN algorithms used in the present study,
Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm yields the best results. Keeping in view the
highly non-linear behaviour and the wide dynamic range of these functions, it
is suggested that these functions can be also considered as standard benchmark

Equine Arteritis Virus Elicits a Mucosal Antibody Response in the Reproductive Tract of Persistently Infected Stallions
Equine arteritis virus (EAV) has the ability to establish persistent infection in the reproductive tract of the stallion (carrier) and is continuously shed in its semen. We have recently demonstrated that EAV persists within stromal cells and a subset of lymphocytes in the stallion accessory sex glands in the presence of a significant local inflammatory response. In the present study, we demonstrated that EAV elicits a mucosal antibody response in the reproductive tract during persistent infection with homing of plasma cells into accessory sex glands. The EAV-specific immunoglobulin isotypes in seminal plasma included IgA, IgG1, IgG3/5, and IgG4/7. Interestingly, seminal plasma IgG1 and IgG4/7 possessed virus-neutralizing activity, while seminal plasma IgA and IgG3/5 did not. However, virus-neutralizing IgG1 and IgG4/7 in seminal plasma were not effective in preventing viral infectivity. In addition, the serological response was primarily mediated by virus-specific IgM and IgG1, while virus-specific serum IgA, IgG3/5, IgG4/7, and IgG6 isotype responses were not detected. This is the first report characterizing the immunoglobulin isotypes in equine serum and seminal plasma in response to EAV infection. The findings presented herein suggest that while a broader immunoglobulin isotype diversity is elicited in seminal plasma, EAV has the ability to persist in the reproductive tract, in spite of local mucosal antibody and inflammatory responses. This study provides further evidence that EAV employs complex immune evasion mechanisms during persistence in the reproductive tract that warrant further investigation
Fractal Inspired Models of Quark and Gluon Distributions and Longitudinal Structure Function FL(x, Q2) at small x
In recent years, Fractal Inspired Models of quark and gluon densities at
small x have been proposed. In this paper, we investigate longitudinal
structure function F-L (x, Q2) within this approach. We make predictions using
the QCD based approximate relation between the longitudinal structure function
and the gluon density. As the Altarelli-Martinelli equation for the
longitudinal structure function cannot be applied to Model I due to the
presence of a singularity in the Bjorken x-space we consider Model II only. The
qualitative feature of the prediction of Model II is found to be compatible

Equine Arteritis Virus Has Specific Tropism for Stromal Cells and CD8\u3csup\u3e+\u3c/sup\u3e T and CD21\u3csup\u3e+\u3c/sup\u3e B Lymphocytes but Not for Glandular Epithelium at the Primary Site of Persistent Infection in the Stallion Reproductive Tract
Equine arteritis virus (EAV) has a global impact on the equine industry as the causative agent of equine viral arteritis (EVA), a respiratory, systemic, and reproductive disease of equids. A distinctive feature of EAV infection is that it establishes long-term persistent infection in 10 to 70% of infected stallions (carriers). In these stallions, EAV is detectable only in the reproductive tract, and viral persistence occurs despite the presence of high serum neutralizing antibody titers. Carrier stallions constitute the natural reservoir of the virus as they continuously shed EAV in their semen. Although the accessory sex glands have been implicated as the primary sites of EAV persistence, the viral host cell tropism and whether viral replication in carrier stallions occurs in the presence or absence of host inflammatory responses remain unknown. In this study, dual immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence techniques were employed to unequivocally demonstrate that the ampulla is the main EAV tissue reservoir rather than immunologically privileged tissues (i.e., testes). Furthermore, we demonstrate that EAV has specific tropism for stromal cells (fibrocytes and possibly tissue macrophages) and CD8+ T and CD21+ B lymphocytes but not glandular epithelium. Persistent EAV infection is associated with moderate, multifocal lymphoplasmacytic ampullitis comprising clusters of B (CD21+) lymphocytes and significant infiltration of T (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, and CD25+) lymphocytes, tissue macrophages, and dendritic cells (Iba-1+ and CD83+), with a small number of tissue macrophages expressing CD163 and CD204 scavenger receptors. This study suggests that EAV employs complex immune evasion mechanisms that warrant further investigation
Preliminary quality results regarding S.V.-18402 interspecific hybrid berries processed by multiple techniques to obtain a novel food product
In this study, SV 18402 interspecific hybrid (PIWI group grapevines) was subjected to processing by syruping the berries before boiling. The variants were: V1.1. - grape product from berries without skin – filtered; V1.2. - grape product from berries without skin – unfiltered; V2.1. - grape product from berries with skin–
filtered; V2.2. - grape product from berries with skin – unfiltered. Before processing, raw material was assessed for total soluble solids (186 g/l sugar), pH (3.25), and acidity (7.35 g/l tartric acid). The variants of products measure soluble dry substance over 67% the minimum amount stipulated by the international standard,
which guarantees the conservability of the product. Regarding sensory comparison, products from the whole berries (skin, pulp, and seeds) proved to be more acceptable by the general public, as compared to the other variants
The gray matter volume of the amygdala is correlated with the perception of melodic intervals: a voxel-based morphometry study
Music is not simply a series of organized pitches, rhythms, and timbres, it is capable of evoking emotions. In the present study, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was employed to explore the neural basis that may link music to emotion. To do this, we identified the neuroanatomical correlates of the ability to extract pitch interval size in a music segment (i.e., interval perception) in a large population of healthy young adults (N = 264). Behaviorally, we found that interval perception was correlated with daily emotional experiences, indicating the intrinsic link between music and emotion. Neurally, and as expected, we found that interval perception was positively correlated with the gray matter volume (GMV) of the bilateral temporal cortex. More important, a larger GMV of the bilateral amygdala was associated with better interval perception, suggesting that the amygdala, which is the neural substrate of emotional processing, is also involved in music processing. In sum, our study provides one of first neuroanatomical evidence on the association between the amygdala and music, which contributes to our understanding of exactly how music evokes emotional responses
Of cattle, sand flies and men : a systematic review of risk factor analyses for South Asian visceral leishmaniasis and implications for elimination
Background: Studies performed over the past decade have identified fairly consistent epidemiological patterns of risk
factors for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Indian subcontinent.
Methods and Principal Findings: To inform the current regional VL elimination effort and identify key gaps in knowledge,
we performed a systematic review of the literature, with a special emphasis on data regarding the role of cattle because
primary risk factor studies have yielded apparently contradictory results. Because humans form the sole infection reservoir,
clustering of kala-azar cases is a prominent epidemiological feature, both at the household level and on a larger scale.
Subclinical infection also tends to show clustering around kala-azar cases. Within villages, areas become saturated over a
period of several years; kala-azar incidence then decreases while neighboring areas see increases. More recently, post kalaazar
dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) cases have followed kala-azar peaks. Mud walls, palpable dampness in houses, and peridomestic
vegetation may increase infection risk through enhanced density and prolonged survival of the sand fly vector.
Bed net use, sleeping on a cot and indoor residual spraying are generally associated with decreased risk. Poor micronutrient
status increases the risk of progression to kala-azar. The presence of cattle is associated with increased risk in some studies
and decreased risk in others, reflecting the complexity of the effect of bovines on sand fly abundance, aggregation, feeding
behavior and leishmanial infection rates. Poverty is an overarching theme, interacting with individual risk factors on multiple
levels.
Conclusions: Carefully designed demonstration projects, taking into account the complex web of interconnected risk
factors, are needed to provide direct proof of principle for elimination and to identify the most effective maintenance
activities to prevent a rapid resurgence when interventions are scaled back. More effective, short-course treatment
regimens for PKDL are urgently needed to enable the elimination initiative to succeed
