On the bend number of circular-arc graphs as edge intersection graphs of paths on a grid
Golumbic, Lipshteyn and Stern \cite{Golumbic-epg} proved that every graph can
be represented as the edge intersection graph of paths on a grid (EPG graph),
i.e., one can associate with each vertex of the graph a nontrivial path on a
rectangular grid such that two vertices are adjacent if and only if the
corresponding paths share at least one edge of the grid. For a nonnegative
integer , -EPG graphs are defined as EPG graphs admitting a model in
which each path has at most bends. Circular-arc graphs are intersection
graphs of open arcs of a circle. It is easy to see that every circular-arc
graph is a -EPG graph, by embedding the circle into a rectangle of the
grid. In this paper, we prove that every circular-arc graph is -EPG, and
that there exist circular-arc graphs which are not -EPG. If we restrict
ourselves to rectangular representations (i.e., the union of the paths used in
the model is contained in a rectangle of the grid), we obtain EPR (edge
intersection of path in a rectangle) representations. We may define -EPR
graphs, , the same way as -EPG graphs. Circular-arc graphs are
clearly -EPR graphs and we will show that there exist circular-arc graphs
that are not -EPR graphs. We also show that normal circular-arc graphs are
-EPR graphs and that there exist normal circular-arc graphs that are not
-EPR graphs. Finally, we characterize -EPR graphs by a family of
minimal forbidden induced subgraphs, and show that they form a subclass of
normal Helly circular-arc graphs
Modelling solar-like variability for the detection of Earth-like planetary transits. II. Performance of the three-spot modelling, harmonic function fitting, iterative nonlinear filtering, and sliding boxcar filtering

As an extension of a previous work, we present a comparison of four methods of filtering solar-like variability to increase the efficiency of detection of Earth-like planetary transits by means of box-shaped transit finder algorithms. Two of these filtering methods are the harmonic fitting method and the iterative nonlinear filter that, coupled respectively with the box least-square (BLS) and box maximum likelihood algorithms, demonstrated the best performance during the first detection blind test organised inside the CoRoT consortium. The third method, the 3-spot model, is a simplified physical model of Sun-like variability and the fourth is a simple sliding boxcar filter.
Methods. We apply a Monte Carlo approach by simulating a large number of 150-day light curves (as for CoRoT long runs) for different planetary radii, orbital periods, epochs of the first transit, and standard deviations of the photon shot noise. Stellar variability is given by the total solar irradiance variations as observed close to the maximum of solar cycle 23. After filtering solar variability, transits are searched for by means of the BLS algorithm.
Results. We find that the iterative nonlinear filter is the best method for filtering light curves of solar-like stars when a suitable window can be chosen. As the performance of this filter depends critically on the length of its window, we point out that the window must be as long as possible, according to the magnetic activity level of the star. We show an automatic method to choose the extension of the filter window from the power spectrum of the light curves.
Conclusions. The iterative nonlinear filter, when used with a suitable choice of its window, has a better performance than more complicated and computationally intensive methods of fitting solar-like variability, like the 200-harmonic fitting or the 3-spot model
Limits on the use of cobalt sulfide as anode of p-type dye-sensitized solar cells
Thin films of cobalt sulfide (CoS) of thickness l < 10m have been employed as anodes of p-type dye-sensitized solar cells (p-DSCs) when P1-sensitized nickel oxide (NiO) was the photoactive cathode and /I - constituted the redox mediator. In the role of counter electrode for p-DSCs, CoS was preferred over traditional platinized fluorine-doped indium oxide (Pt-FTO) due to the lower cost of the starting materials (Co salts) and the easier procedure of deposition onto large area substrates. The latter process was carried out via direct precipitation of CoS from aqueous solutions. The photoconversion efficiency (η) of the corresponding device was 0.07%. This value is about 35% less than the efficiency that is obtained with the analogous p-DSC employing the Pt-FTO anode (η = 0.11). Unlike p-DSCs based on Pt-FTO anodes, the photoelectrochemical cells employing CoS electrodes showed that this anodic material was not able to sustain the photocurrent densities generated by P1-sensitized NiO at a given photopotential. Illumination of the p-DSCs with CoS anodes and P1-sensitized NiO cathodes actually induced the reverse bias of the photoelectrochemical cell with CoS behaving like a p-type semiconductor with no degeneracy. © 2017 IOP Publishing Ltd
On the characteristics of natural hydraulic dampers: An image-based approach to study the fluid flow behaviour inside the human meniscal tissue
The meniscal tissue is a layered material with varying properties influenced
by collagen content and arrangement. Understanding the relationship between
structure and properties is crucial for disease management, treatment
development, and biomaterial design. The internal layer of the meniscus is
softer and more deformable than the outer layers, thanks to interconnected
collagen channels that guide fluid flow. To investigate these relationships, we
propose a novel approach that combines Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with
Image Analysis (CFD-IA). We analyze fluid flow in the internal architecture of
the human meniscus across a range of inlet velocities (0.1mm/s to 1.6m/s) using
high-resolution 3D micro-computed tomography scans. Statistical correlations
are observed between architectural parameters (tortuosity, connectivity,
porosity, pore size) and fluid flow parameters (Re number distribution,
permeability). Some channels exhibit Re values of 1400 at an inlet velocity of
1.6m/s, and a transition from Darcy's regime to a non-Darcian regime occurs
around an inlet velocity of 0.02m/s. Location-dependent permeability ranges
from 20-32 Darcy. Regression modelling reveals a strong correlation between
fluid velocity and tortuosity at high inlet velocities, as well as with channel
diameter at low inlet velocities. At higher inlet velocities, flow paths
deviate more from the preferential direction, resulting in a decrease in the
concentration parameter by an average of 0.4. This research provides valuable
insights into the fluid flow behaviour within the meniscus and its structural

New insights on COPD imaging via CT and MRI
Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) can be used to quantify morphological features and investigate structure/function relationship in COPD. This approach allows a phenotypical definition of COPD patients, and might improve our understanding of disease pathogenesis and suggest new therapeutical options. In recent years, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has also become potentially suitable for the assessment of ventilation, perfusion and respiratory mechanics. This review focuses on the established clinical applications of CT, and novel CT and MRI techniques, which may prove valuable in evaluating the structural and functional damage in COPD
Detection of Neptune-size planetary candidates with CoRoT data. Comparison with the planet occurrence rate derived from Kepler
[Abridged] Context. The CoRoT space mission has been searching for transiting
planets since the end of December 2006. Aims. We aim to investigate the
capability of CoRoT to detect small-size transiting planets in short-period
orbits, and to compare the number of CoRoT planets with 2 \leq R_p \leq 4
Rearth with the occurrence rate of small-size planets provided by the
distribution of Kepler planetary candidates (Howard et al. 2012). Methods. We
performed a test that simulates transits of super-Earths and Neptunes in real
CoRoT light curves and searches for them blindly by using the LAM transit
detection pipeline. Results. The CoRoT detection rate of planets with radius
between 2 and 4 Rearth and orbital period P \leq 20 days is 59% (31%) around
stars brighter than r'=14.0 (15.5). By properly taking the CoRoT detection rate
for Neptune-size planets and the transit probability into account, we found
that according to the Kepler planet occurrence rate, CoRoT should have
discovered 12 \pm 2 Neptunes orbiting G and K dwarfs with P \leq 17 days in six
observational runs. This estimate must be compared with the validated Neptune
CoRoT-24b and five CoRoT planetary candidates in the considered range of
planetary radii. We thus found a disagreement with expectations from Kepler at
3 \sigma or 5 \sigma, assuming a blend fraction of 0% (six Neptunes) and 100%
(one Neptune) for these candidates. Conclusions. This underabundance of CoRoT
Neptunes with respect to Kepler may be due to several reasons. Regardless of
the origin of the disagreement, which needs to be investigated in more detail,
the noticeable deficiency of CoRoT Neptunes at short orbital periods seems to
indirectly support the general trend found in Kepler data, i.e. that the
frequency of small-size planets increases with increasing orbital periods and

Abies nebrodensis \ue8 una specie endemica relitta, gravemente minacciata di estinzione, la cui popolazione naturale \ue8 costituita da 30 individui distribuiti discontinuamente in una piccola area del territorio di Polizzi Generosa, all\u2019interno del Parco naturale delle Madonie in Sicilia. La minaccia di estinzione \ue8 dovuta, oltre all'esiguit\ue0 della popolazione, al ridotto numero di piante mature (ventiquattro) e al pericolo di inquinamento genetico incombente. A partire dall\u2019inizio degli anni \u201880 del secolo scorso, infatti, sono stati introdotti nella vicinanze dell\u2019area di indignato individui di abeti esotici (Abies alba Mill., A. cephalonica Loudon, e A. nordmanniana (Stefen) Spach) che, avendo raggiunto la maturit\ue0 sessuale, potrebbero mettere a rischio l\u2019integrit\ue0 genetica della progenie dell\u2019abete locale (Raimondo & Schicchi, 2005). Nell\u2019ambito del progetto \u201cConservazione di Abies nebrodensis e ripristino delle torbiere di Geraci Siculo\u201d, in corso di attuazione da parte dell\u2019Ente Parco delle Madonie, del Dipartimento di Biologia ambientale e Biodiversit\ue0 di Palermo e di altri partners locali, un\u2019azione di salvaguardia prevede l\u2019innesto degli abeti esotici con marze di A. nebrodensis, valorizzando la positiva esperienza effettuata con il progetto Life Natura (1). A tal fine, nel periodo compreso tra la terza decade di aprile e la seconda decade di maggio sono stati effettuati circa 350 innesti in contrada Comunello, nel territorio di Isnello. Le marze sono state prelevate da individui maturi di A. nebrodensis di oltre 30 anni di et\ue0, introdotti nelle opere di ripopolamento che, in seguito ai risultati delle analisi genetiche, sono geneticamente correlati agli esemplari della popolazione naturale. Gli innesti sono stati eseguiti a spacco ma soprattutto a corona, previa capitozzatura dei soggetti di A. alba e A. cephalonica, a un\u2019altezza di circa 2 m per evitare possibili danneggiamenti da parte del bestiame. Nei soggetti sono stati, comunque, rilasciati temporaneamente alcuni palchi che, continuando a svolgere le normali funzioni vitali, agevoleranno l\u2019attecchimento delle marze. Queste ultime sono state opportunamente sagomate e inserite tra la corteccia e il legno sia nel fusto capitozzato che in alcuni rami laterali. Esse sono state tenute strettamente aderenti ai soggetti tramite nastro adesivo e protette da due sacchetti, rispettivamente di polietilene e di carta, per creare condizioni micro-climatiche ottimali alla sopravvivenza delle marze. Dalla terza decade di maggio \ue8 iniziato, con cadenza settimanale, il monitoraggio degli innesti e la foratura, ove necessario, del sacchetto di plastica per eliminare l\u2019umidit\ue0 in eccesso. Dopo 40 giorni \ue8 stato possibile constatare che oltre il 90% degli innesti \ue8 attecchito. Anche alcuni innesti eseguiti a scopo sperimentale su Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco sono vitali. Durante la fine di luglio e agosto si prevede una graduale scopertura delle marze. Gli esiti di questa azione, tuttavia, potranno essere valutati compiutamente all\u2019inizio della prossima primavera. La tecnica dell\u2019innesto riveste notevole importanza poich\ue9 permette di eliminare o ridurre una delle minacce pi\uf9 consistenti a carico della popolazione naturale di A. nebrodensis, trasformando la stessa in un punto di forza nell\u2019ambito della strategia di conservazione della specie. Essa, infatti, potr\ue0 contribuire a incrementare la popolazione dell\u2019endemico A. nebrodensis, valorizzando come portainnesti piante che se non abbattute costituirebbero un serio pericolo per la conservazione dell\u2019abete delle Madonie.
