Cooperation in the iterated prisoner's dilemma is learned by operant conditioning mechanisms
The prisoner's dilemma (PD) is the leading metaphor for the evolution of cooperative behavior in populations of selfish agents. Although cooperation in the iterated prisoner's dilemma (IPD) has been studied for over twenty years, most of this research has been focused on strategies that involve nonlearned behavior. Another approach is to suppose that players' selection of the preferred reply might he enforced in the same way as feeding animals track the best way to feed in changing nonstationary environments. Learning mechanisms such as operant conditioning enable animals to acquire relevant characteristics of their environment in order to get reinforcements and to avoid punishments. In this study, the role of operant conditioning in the learning of cooperation was evaluated in the PD. We found that operant mechanisms allow the learning of IPD play against other strategies. When random moves are allowed in the game, the operant learning model showed low sensitivity. Learning obstacle avoidance with an operant behavioral model
Artificial intelligence researchers have been attracted by the idea of having robots learn how to accomplish a task, rather than being told explicitly. Reinforcement learning has been proposed as an appealing framework to be used in controlling mobile agents. Robot learning research, as well as research in biological systems, face many similar problems in order to display high flexibility in performing a variety of tasks. In this work, the controlling of a vehicle in an avoidance task by a previously developed operant learning model (a form of animal learning) is studied. An environment in which a mobile robot with proximity sensors has to minimize the punishment for colliding against obstacles is simulated. The results were compared with the Q-Learning algorithm, and the proposed model had better performance. Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae: new ties between the chemical and dynamical evolution of globular clusters?
It is generally accepted today that Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) consist
of at least two generations of stars that are different in their chemical
composition and perhaps age. However, knowledge about the kinematical
properties of these stellar generations, which may provide important
information for constraining evolutionary scenarios of the GGCs, is still
limited. We therefore study the connections between chemical and kinematical
properties of different stellar generations in the Galactic globular cluster 47
Tuc. To achieve this goal, we used abundances of Li, O, and Na determined in
101 main sequence turn-off (TO) stars with the aid of 3D hydrodynamical model
atmospheres and NLTE abundance analysis methodology. We divided our sample TO
stars into three groups according to their position in the [Li/Na]-[Na/O] plane
to study their spatial distribution and kinematical properties. We find that
there are statistically significant radial dependencies of lithium and oxygen
abundances, A(Li) and A(O), as well as that of [Li/Na] abundance ratio. Our
results show that first-generation stars are less centrally concentrated and
dynamically hotter than stars belonging to subsequent generations. We also find
a significant correlation between the velocity dispersion and O and Na
abundance, and between the velocity dispersion and the [Na/O] abundance ratio.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Optical bistability in sideband output modes induced by squeezed vacuum
We consider two-level atoms in a ring cavity interacting with a broadband
squeezed vacuum centered at frequency and an input monochromatic
driving field at frequency . We show that, besides the central mode
(at \o), many other {\em sideband modes} are produced at the output, with
frequencies shifted from by multiples of .

Chemical composition of the stellar cluster Gaia1: No surprise behind Sirius
Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus.We observed six He-clump stars of the intermediate-Age stellar cluster Gaia1 with the MIKE/Magellan spectrograph. A possible extra-galactic origin of this cluster, recently discovered thanks to the first data release of the ESA Gaia mission, has been suggested, based on its orbital parameters. Abundances for Fe, α, proton-And neutron-capture elements have been obtained. We find no evidence of intrinsic abundance spreads. The iron abundance is solar ([FeI/H] = + 0.00 ± 0.01; σ = 0.03 dex). All the other abundance ratios are generally solar-scaled, similar to the Galactic thin disk and open cluster stars of similar metallicity. The chemical composition of Gaia1 does not support an extra-galactic origin for this stellar cluster, which can be considered as a standard Galactic open cluster.https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/abs/2017/07/aa31009-17/aa31009-17.htm
Effects of atomic diffraction on the Collective Atomic Recoil Laser
We formulate a wave atom optics theory of the Collective Atomic Recoil Laser,
where the atomic center-of-mass motion is treated quantum mechanically. By
comparing the predictions of this theory with those of the ray atom optics
theory, which treats the center-of-mass motion classically, we show that for
the case of a far off-resonant pump laser the ray optics model fails to predict
the linear response of the CARL when the temperature is of the order of the
recoil temperature or less. This is due to the fact that in theis temperature
regime one can no longer ignore the effects of matter-wave diffraction on the
