    On the simulation of interactive non-verbal behaviour in virtual humans

    Development of virtual humans has focused mainly in two broad areas - conversational agents and computer game characters. Computer game characters have traditionally been action-oriented - focused on the game-play - and conversational agents have been focused on sensible/intelligent conversation. While virtual humans have incorporated some form of non-verbal behaviour, this has been quite limited and more importantly not connected or connected very loosely with the behaviour of a real human interacting with the virtual human - due to a lack of sensor data and no system to respond to that data. The interactional aspect of non-verbal behaviour is highly important in human-human interactions and previous research has demonstrated that people treat media (and therefore virtual humans) as real people, and so interactive non-verbal behaviour is also important in the development of virtual humans. This paper presents the challenges in creating virtual humans that are non-verbally interactive and drawing corollaries with the development history of control systems in robotics presents some approaches to solving these challenges - specifically using behaviour based systems - and shows how an order of magnitude increase in response time of virtual humans in conversation can be obtained and that the development of rapidly responding non-verbal behaviours can start with just a few behaviours with more behaviours added without difficulty later in development

    This study aims to determine the level of effectiveness and efficiency of village fund allocations in improving Allang village development. The tool used in this study uses the ratio of effectiveness and efficiency ratio. The results of this study indicate that the average level of effectiveness in Alang village of 91.57% is included in the effective category, but if you look at the use of village fund allocations in 2018 it is categorized as quite effective with a ratio of 79.23% due to a smaller income budget factor. of revenue realization.     Indonesia as one of the developing country has some of coastal areas which utilized to develop the industrial activities based on manufacturing industry with labor intensive or even capital intensive.The development of industry activities in Batam are rely on domestic investment and foreign investment. One of the targeted region of industrial development is Batam City. With full support of industrial development from government on Economic Exclusive Zone, now industrial sector become the influence sector and leading sector in Gross Domestic Product of Batam City. It is also become the main focus of economic development. The aim of this research is to analyze and observe the influence of industrial activity to an increase in citizens\u27 economy based on income and the development of trade and services in Batam City. This research use quantitative approach with survey research method. The data collections are done with field surveys and questionnaires. Sampling which used in this research is purposive sampling, which targeted the sample according to the objective of research, therefore, the samples are the citizens who work in industrial sector. The study of this research shows that there are an increase in citizen\u27s economy and the development of trade and services as multiplier effect as the result of industrial activities in Batam City

    Ocean Planet or Thick Atmosphere: On the Mass-Radius Relationship for Solid Exoplanets with Massive Atmospheres

    The bulk composition of an exoplanet is commonly inferred from its average density. For small planets, however, the average density is not unique within the range of compositions. Variations of a number of important planetary parameters--which are difficult or impossible to constrain from measurements alone--produce planets with the same average densities but widely varying bulk compositions. We find that adding a gas envelope equivalent to 0.1%-10% of the mass of a solid planet causes the radius to increase 5-60% above its gas-free value. A planet with a given mass and radius might have substantial water ice content (a so-called ocean planet) or alternatively a large rocky-iron core and some H and/or He. For example, a wide variety of compositions can explain the observed radius of GJ 436b, although all models require some H/He. We conclude that the identification of water worlds based on the mass-radius relationship alone is impossible unless a significant gas layer can be ruled out by other means.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted to Ap

    This paper aims to compare the adsorption performance of activated carbon and pine bark for iron and manganese removal from contaminated groundwater. Moreover, their environmental compatibility was checked for their possible use as reactive media in a permeable reactive barrier for in situ remediation. Batch tests were carried out with different iron and manganese concentrations and different particle-size distributions, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the activated carbon and pine bark on removal depending on both the initial pollutant concentration and the surface area of the adsorbent. High removal efficiencies were reached by both of the reactive media. However, faster removal at higher concentration was observed only for iron adsorption by activated carbon. The particle-size distribution did not significantly influence the process in the experimental conditions tested. The immobilization process on the reactive media can be considered almost irreversible since the quantities of iron and manganese released during the desorption tests were negligible

    Skyrmion Lattice in a Chiral Magnet

    Skyrmions represent topologically stable field configurations with particle-like properties. We used neutron scattering to observe the spontaneous formation of a two-dimensional lattice of skyrmion lines, a type of magnetic vortices, in the chiral itinerant-electron magnet MnSi. The skyrmion lattice stabilizes at the border between paramagnetism and long-range helimagnetic order perpendicular to a small applied magnetic field regardless of the direction of the magnetic field relative to the atomic lattice. Our study experimentally establishes magnetic materials lacking inversion symmetry as an arena for new forms of crystalline order composed of topologically stable spin states

    Postoperative laryngoscopy in thyroid surgery: proper timing to detect recurrent laryngeal nerve injury

    BACKGROUND: There is currently a lack of consensus to support the proper timing for postoperative laryngoscopy that is reliable to diagnose recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP) after thyroid surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of different time intervals of fiber-optic nasolaryngoscopy (FNL) on the diagnosis of RLNP. METHOD: FNL was performed postoperatively at day 0 (T1), at second day post-op (T2), and +2 weeks (T3). For patients with RLNP, repeated examinations were performed at +2 (T4), +6 (T5), and +12 months (T6). RESULTS: Four hundred thirty-four patients appear for postoperative FNL, providing 825 nerves at risk. Permanent RLNP occurred in 0.7%, temporary RLNP in 6.7%. RLNP rate was 6.4% at T1, 6.7% at T2, 4.8% at T3, 2.5% at T4, 0.8% at T5, and 0.7% at T6. Full recovery of vocal cord function was confirmed after rehabilitation in 87.5% of cases at T5 and 89% in T6. T2 was significantly superior to T3 in terms of diagnosis of RLNP (P < 0.05). Of patients at T2, 10.7% did not see any reason to FNL because of their normal voice register. CONCLUSION: FNL is essential for the detection of vocal cord paralysis after thyroidectomy. We report different time evaluation criteria of vocal cord motility with great and significant variability of results. Second day post-op inspection of the larynx (T2) is suggested. Symptomatic voice assessment is insufficient

    The sensitivity of a specific denitrification rate under the dissolved oxygen pressure

    The biological denitrification process is extensively discussed in scientific literature. The process requires anoxic conditions, but the influence of residual dissolved oxygen (DO) on the efficiency is not yet adequately documented. The present research aims to fill this gap by highlighting the effects of DO on the specific denitrification rate (SDNR) and consequently on the efficiency of the process. SDNR at a temperature of 20◦C (SDNR20◦C) is the parameter normally used for the sizing of the denitrification reactor in biological-activated sludge processes. A sensitivity analysis of SNDR20◦C to DO variations is developed. For this purpose, two of the main empirical models illustrated in the scientific literature are taken into consideration, with the addition of a deterministic third model proposed by the authors and validated by recent experimentations on several full-scale plants. In the first two models, SDNR20◦C is expressed as a function of the only variable food:microrganism ratio in denitrification (F:MDEN), while in the third one, the dependence on DO is made explicit. The sensitivity analysis highlights all the significant dependence of SDNR20◦C on DO characterized by a logarithmic decrease with a very pronounced gradient in correspondence with low DO concentrations. Moreover, the analysis demonstrates the relatively small influence of F:MDEN on the SDNR20◦C and on the correlation between SDNR20◦C and DO. The results confirm the great importance of minimizing DO and limiting, as much as possible, the transport of oxygen in the denitrification reactor through the incoming flows and mainly the mixed liquor recycle.
