Measuring the Complexity of Continuous Distributions

We extend previously proposed measures of complexity, emergence, and self-organization to continuous distributions using differential entropy. This allows us to calculate the complexity of phenomena for which distributions are known. We find that a broad range of common parameters found in Gaussian and scale-free distributions present high complexity values. Emoji as a Proxy of Emotional Communication

Nowadays, emoji plays a fundamental role in human computer-mediated communications, allowing the latter to convey body language, objects, symbols, or ideas in text messages using Unicode standardized pictographs and logographs. Emoji allows people expressing more “authentically” emotions and their personalities, by increasing the semantic content of visual messages. The relationship between language, emoji, and emotions is now being studied by several disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning (ML). Particularly, the last two are employed for the automatic detection of emotions and personality traits, building emoji sentiment lexicons, as well as for conveying artificial agents with the ability of expressing emotions through emoji. In this chapter, we introduce the concept of emoji and review the main challenges in using these as a proxy of language and emotions, the ML, and NLP techniques used for classification and detection of emotions using emoji, and presenting new trends for the exploitation of discovered emotional patterns for robotic emotional communication

Impacte de la recuperació de l'estany d'Ivars i Vila-sana sobre la població d'ocells aquàtics hivernal a la plana de Lleida

L'estany d'Ivars i Vila-sana havia estat una de les principals zones humides de la Catalunya interior. La seva dessecació a principis dels anys 50 del segle passat va comportar la desaparició dels ocells aquàtics que hi habitaven . L'any 2006, després de més de 50 anys de la seva dessecació, es va posar en marxa el procés per a recuperar l'antic estany i es va començar a reinundar la seva cubeta. Per tal de valorar la resposta dels ocells aquàtics a la recuperació de l'estany s'han analitzat les dades dels censos d'ocells aquàtics hivernants de Catalunya Obtingudes a la plana de Lleida el període 2003-201

The Past, Present, and Future of Artificial Life

For millennia people have wondered what makes the living different from the non-living. Beginning in the mid-1980s, artificial life has studied living systems using a synthetic approach: build life in order to understand it better, be it by means of software, hardware, or wetware. This review provides a summary of the advances that led to the development of artificial life, its current research topics, and open problems and opportunities. We classify artificial life research into fourteen themes: origins of life, autonomy, self-organization, adaptation (including evolution, development, and learning), ecology, artificial societies, behavior, computational biology, artificial chemistries, information, living technology, art, and philosophy. Being interdisciplinary, artificial life seems to be losing its boundaries and merging with other fields

Fiestas en honor a la Santa Muerte en el Caribe mexicano

This paper deals with three feasts in honor to Santa Muerte in Chetumal, a city located at the confluence of the Caribbean and Central America. The text shows the general features of the celebrations organized annually by the parish church of the Lord of mercy and the Santa Muerte, attached to the Catholic Church traditional Mexico - United States, as well as two household altars that operate as esoteric centers. To characterize these occasions allows to understand the form in which there has developed a local religious practice, which far from having the only tradition, feeds proper rituals; the different local structures allow the believers to express its belief by means of the insertion in the organization of these festivities.Se abordan tres fiestas en honor a la Santa Muerte en Chetumal. Se muestran los rasgos generales de las celebraciones organizadas anualmente por la parroquia del Señor de la Misericordia y la Santa Muerte, adscrita a la Iglesia Católica Tradicional México-Estados Unidos, así como por dos altares domésticos que operan como centros esotéricos. Caracterizar estas ocasiones permite entender la forma en que se ha desarrollado una práctica religiosa local, que lejos de tener una tradición única, alimenta rituales propios. Las diferentes estructuras locales permiten que los creyentes expresen su creencia mediante la inserción en la organización de estas fiestas
