This thesis aims at investigating the application of local security measures in two different multicultural neighbourhoods: via Padova in Milan and Lavapi\ue9s in Madrid. Comparing this two areas helps to understand how the concept and the practice of "security" is connected with the criminalization of immigrants both in Italy and in Spain. Moreover, the approval of measures with a local target permits to underline the connection existing between security, immigration and the neighbourhood as privileged space of social control. Relying on different approaches towards the concepts of "immigration", "security" and "neighbourhood", and 64 semi-structured interviews, this work proposes a specifical focus on the perception of security of the residents of the analyzed neighbourhoods. The residents interviewed are italians, spanish and immigrants from different countries that gathered in the neighbourhood, building networks, associations and social struggle.\ua

Versatile lithium fluoride thin-film solid-state detectors for nanoscale radiation imaging

Point defects in insulating materials are successfully used for radiation detectors. Among them, colour centres in lithium fluoride (LiF) are well known for application in dosimeters and in light-emitting devices and lasers. LiF thin-film detectors for extreme ultraviolet radiation, soft and hard X-rays, based on photoluminescence from aggregate electronic defects, are currently under development for imaging application with laboratory radiation sources, e.g. laser-driven plasma sources and conventional X-ray tubes, as well as large-scale facilities, e.g. synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. Among the peculiarities of these detectors, noteworthy ones are the very high intrinsic spatial resolution ( 1 cm2) and the wide dynamic range. Moreover, they are insensitive to ambient light and no development process is needed. The latent images stored in the LiF thin layer can be read with fluorescence optical microscopy techniques. These detectors prove to be highly versatile, as LiF is sensitive to almost any kind of radiation, including charged particles and neutrons, and can be grown in the form of polycrystalline thin films, whose photoluminescence response can be tailored trough the control of the growth conditions

Discontinuously supervised aerobic training vs. physical activity promotion in the self-management of type 2 diabetes in older Italian patients: design and methods of the 'TRIPL-A' randomized controlled trial

    Get PDF
Physical activity (PA) has health benefits for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Indeed, regular PA is considered an important part of any T2D management plan, yet most patients adopt a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise referral schemes (ERS) have the potential to effectively promote physical activity among T2D patients, and their effectiveness may be enhanced when they are supported by computer-based technologies. The 'TRIPL-A' study (i.e., a TRIal to promote PhysicaL Activity among patients in the young-old age affected by T2D) aims to assess if realizing an innovative ERS, based on a strong partnership among general practitioners, specialist physicians, exercise specialists, and patients, and supported by a web-based application (WBA), can effectively lead sedentary older T2D patients to adopt an active lifestyle

The Dinuclear Copper Site Structure of Agaricus bisporus Tyrosinase in Solution Probed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy*

We have measured the x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra of the enzyme tyrosinase from the mushroom Agaricus bisporus in solution in the oxy and deoxy forms. The spectra, obtained under the same conditions as the analogous forms of mollusc hemocyanin (Hc), show that the oxidation state of copper changes from Cu(II) (oxy form) to Cu(I) (deoxy form), and the copper active site(s) of A. bisporus tyrosinase in solution undergoes the same main conformational changes as Hc. We have applied the multiple scattering theory to simulate the XANES spectra of various alternative geometries of the copper site, accounting for the residual differences between Hc and tyrosinase. While oxy-Hc is reasonably fitted only by the pseudo-square-pyramidal geometry reported by its crystallographic data, oxytyrosinase can be fitted, starting from the Hc coordinates, either by distortions toward a pseudo-tetrahedral geometry, with inequivalent copper sites, or by an apically distorted square-pyramidal geometry (with an elongation of the apical distance of no more than 0.2 A)

Introduction: Glycolysis affects glucose determination in vitro. The placement of sample tubes in ice-water slurry with plasma separation within 30 minutes is recommended, or alternatively the use of a glycolysis inhibitor. The aim of our two-steps study was to evaluate which Terumo tube is best for glucose determination in routine clinical setting. Materials and methods: In the first study, blood from 100 volunteers was collected into lithium heparin (LH), NaF/Na heparin (FH) and NaF/citrate buffer/Na2EDTA (FC-Mixture) tubes. LH sample was treated as recommended and considered as reference, while FH and FC-Mixture samples were aliquoted, maintained at room temperature (RT) for 1, 2 and 4 hours; centrifuged and plasma analysed in triplicate. In the second study, samples from 375 volunteers were collected in LH, FH and FC-Mixture tubes and held at RT before centrifugation from 10 to 340 minutes, depending on each laboratory practice. Samples were analysed in one analytical run. Results: In the first study, FH glucose concentrations were 5.15 ± 0.66 mmol/L, 5.05 ± 0.65 mmol/L and 5.00 ± 0.65 mmol/L (P < 0.001) in tubes stored at RT for 1, 2 and 4 hours, respectively. Mean biases in all time points exceeded the analytical goal for desirable bias based on biological variation criteria. FC-Mixture glucose concentrations were 5.48 ± 0.65 mmol/L, 5.46 ± 0.6 mmol/L and 5.46 ± 0.64 mmol/L in tubes stored at RT for 1, 2 and 4 hours, respectively. Mean biases for FC-Mixture glucose in all time points reached optimal analytical goals. In the second study, the biases for LH and FH glucose compared to reference FC-Mixture glucose exceeded the preset analytical goals, regardless of the blood collection to centrifugation time interval. Conclusions: FC-mixture tubes glucose concentrations were preserved up to 4h storage at RT. We confirmed that NaF alone does not allow immediate glycolysis inhibition in real life pre-centrifugation storage conditions (up to 340 minutes). FC-Mixture should be used exclusively for glucose determination in laboratories unable to implement the recommended blood samples’ treatment

La Herradura site is located 18 km NW from Cachi, in the north of the Calchaqui Valley. It is constituted by four platforms with an important set of engravings, associated with enclosures. The set is interpreted as a ritual place. From an iconographic and spatial analysis, we were able to differentiate, characterize and interpret representations assignable to different moments of the cultural development of the region, assigned to early and late times. This early motifs are represented through the figure of the feline and have been incorporated into the late composition as they are integrated within the same supports. The chronological disparity of the representations leads us to propose that La Herradura site constitutes a place of memory. The choice of the same places in different times could suggest the existence of a continuity in the memory process, where the earliest motifs played an active role in late ritual practice.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Radiation-induced color centers locally produced in lithium fluoride (LiF) are successfully used for radiation detectors. LiF detectors for extreme ultraviolet radiation, soft and hard X-rays, based on photoluminescence from aggregate electronic defects, are currently under development for imaging applications with laboratory radiation sources, as well as large-scale facilities. Among the peculiarities of LiF-based detectors, noteworthy ones are their very high intrinsic spatial resolution across a large field of view, wide dynamic range, and versatility. LiF crystals irradiated with a monochromatic 8 keV X-ray beam at KIT synchrotron light source (Karlsruhe, Germany) and with the broadband white beam spectrum of the synchrotron bending magnet have been investigated by optical spectroscopy, laser scanning confocal microscopy in fluorescence mode, and confocal Raman micro-spectroscopy. The 3D reconstruction of the distributions of the color centers induced by the X-rays has been performed with both confocal techniques. The combination of the LiF crystal capability to register volumetric X-ray mapping with the optical sectioning operations of the confocal techniques has allowed performing 3D reconstructions of the X-ray colored volumes and it could provide advanced tools for 3D X-ray detection

Análisis del tratamiento de la noción de límite en libros de texto de matemática universitaria

    Get PDF
