Peer reviewe

The power spectrum of solar convection flows from high-resolution observations and 3D simulations

We compare Fourier spectra of photospheric velocity fields from very high resolution IMaX observations to those from recent 3D numerical magnetoconvection models. We carry out a proper comparison by synthesizing spectral lines from the numerical models and then applying to them the adequate residual instrumental degradation that affects the observational data. Also, the validity of the usual observational proxies is tested by obtaining synthetic observations from the numerical boxes and comparing the velocity proxies to the actual velocity values from the numerical grid. For the observations, data from the SUNRISE/IMaX instrument with about 120 km spatial resolution are used, thus allowing the calculation of observational Fourier spectra well into the subgranular range. For the simulations, we use four series of runs obtained with the STAGGER code and synthesize the IMaX spectral line (FeI 5250.2 A) from them. Proxies for the velocity field are obtained via Dopplergrams (vertical component) and local correlation tracking (horizontal component). A very good match between observational and simulated Fourier power spectra is obtained for the vertical velocity data for scales between 200 km and 6 Mm. Instead, a clear vertical shift is obtained when the synthetic observations are not degraded. The match for the horizontal velocity data is much less impressive because of the inaccuracies of the LCT procedure. Concerning the internal comparison of the direct velocity values of the numerical boxes with those from the synthetic observations, a high correlation (0.96) is obtained for the vertical component when using the velocity values on the log(tau500tau_{500}) = -1 surface in the box. The corresponding Fourier spectra are near each other. A lower maximum correlation (0.5) is reached (at tau500tau_{500} = 1) for the horizontal velocities as a result of the coarseness of the LCT procedure.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted in A&

Spectra of weighted algebras of holomorphic functions

We consider weighted algebras of holomorphic functions on a Banach space. We determine conditions on a family of weights that assure that the corresponding weighted space is an algebra or has polynomial Schauder decompositions. We study the spectra of weighted algebras and endow them with an analytic structure. We also deal with composition operators and algebra homomorphisms, in particular to investigate how their induced mappings act on the analytic structure of the spectrum. Moreover, a Banach-Stone type question is addressed.Comment: 25 pages Corrected typo

Present and future of radio in Spain: an application of the Life Cycle Model to the industry

    Get PDF
Radio in Spain has been losing audience and advertising year after year since 2012. Never before had the sector been through a moment like this, and it is especially relevant for Prisa Radio, Ábside Media and Atresmedia Radio. The theoretical framework of media economics, media management and ILC (Industry Life Cycle), applied to market data, has served to illuminate the resistant variables (dependent dual market, oligopolistic structure and use of star system appeal) that explain this moment in the sector’s life cycle. In this context, the improvement in the economic results of these companies that are in transition from the stage of maturity to defensive resistance, and which can lead to adaptation or obsolescence, is not a paradox. The findings of this research may help companies awaken to the fact that through strategic actions, there is still time to respond to the variables which lead to obsolescence.

Calculating energy derivatives for quantum chemistry on a quantum computer

    Get PDF
Modeling chemical reactions and complicated molecular systems has been proposed as the `killer application' of a future quantum computer. Accurate calculations of derivatives of molecular eigenenergies are essential towards this end, allowing for geometry optimization, transition state searches, predictions of the response to an applied electric or magnetic field, and molecular dynamics simulations. In this work, we survey methods to calculate energy derivatives, and present two new methods: one based on quantum phase estimation, the other on a low-order response approximation. We calculate asymptotic error bounds and approximate computational scalings for the methods presented. Implementing these methods, we perform the world's first geometry optimization on an experimental quantum processor, estimating the equilibrium bond length of the dihydrogen molecule to within 0.014 Angstrom of the full configuration interaction value. Within the same experiment, we estimate the polarizability of the H2 molecule, finding agreement at the equilibrium bond length to within 0.06 a.u. (2% relative error).Comment: 19 pages, 1 page supplemental, 7 figures. v2 - tidied up and added example to appendice

Serum S-adenosylmethionine, but not methionine, increases in response to overfeeding in humans

Background: Plasma concentration of the methyl donor S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) is linearly associated with body mass index (BMI) and fat mass. As SAM is a high-energy compound and a sensor of cellular nutrient status, we hypothesized that SAM would increase with overfeeding. Methods: Forty normal to overweight men and women were overfed by 1250 kcal per day for 28 days. Results: Serum SAM increased from 106 to 130 nmol/l (P=0.006). In stratified analysis, only those with weight gain above the median (high-weight gainers; average weight gain 3.9±0.3 kg) had increased SAM (+42%, P=0.001), whereas low-weight gainers (weight gain 1.5±0.2 kg) did not (Pinteraction=0.018). Overfeeding did not alter serum concentrations of the SAM precursor, methionine or the products, S-adenosyl-homocysteine and homocysteine. The SAM/SAH (S-adenosylhomocysteine) ratio was unchanged in the total population, but increased in high-weight gainers (+52%, P=0.006, Pinteraction =0.005). Change in SAM correlated positively with change in weight (r=0.33, P=0.041) and fat mass (r=0.44, P=0.009), but not with change in protein intake or plasma methionine, glucose, insulin or low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol. Conclusion: Overfeeding raised serum SAM in proportion to the fat mass gained. The increase in SAM may help stabilize methionine levels, and denotes a responsiveness of SAM to nutrient state in humans. The role of SAM in human energy metabolism deserves further attention.A K Elshorbagy, F Jernerén, D Samocha-Bonet, H Refsum and L K Heilbron

We present the current status of the a new approach to quantum general relativity based on the exact resummation of its perturbative series as that series was formulated by Feynman. We show that the resummed theory is UV finite and we present some phenomenological applications as well.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; presented at ICHEP0
