    Application of XFaster power spectrum and likelihood estimator to Planck

    We develop the XFaster Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy power spectrum and likelihood technique for the Planck CMB satellite mission. We give an overview of this estimator and its current implementation and present the results of applying this algorithm to simulated Planck data. We show that it can accurately extract the power spectrum of Planck data for the high-l multipoles range. We compare the XFaster approximation for the likelihood to other high-l likelihood approximations such as Gaussian and Offset Lognormal and a low-l pixel-based likelihood. We show that the XFaster likelihood is not only accurate at high-l, but also performs well at moderately low multipoles. We also present results for cosmological parameter Markov Chain Monte Carlo estimation with the XFaster likelihood. As long as the low-l polarization and temperature power are properly accounted for, e.g., by adding an adequate low-l likelihood ingredient, the input parameters are recovered to a high level of accuracy.Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures, updated to reflect published version: slightly extended account of XFaster technique, added improved plots and minor corrections.     Power Spectrum Estimators For Large CMB Datasets

    Forthcoming high-resolution observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation will generate datasets many orders of magnitude larger than have been obtained to date. The size and complexity of such datasets presents a very serious challenge to analysing them with existing or anticipated computers. Here we present an investigation of the currently favored algorithm for obtaining the power spectrum from a sky-temperature map --- the quadratic estimator. We show that, whilst improving on direct evaluation of the likelihood function, current implementations still inherently scale as the equivalent of the cube of the number of pixels or worse, and demonstrate the critical importance of choosing the right implementation for a particular dataset.Comment: 8 pages LATEX, no figures, corrected misaligned columns in table

    Small mammals and habitat structure along altitudinal gradients in the southern Cape mountains

    Small mammals were sampled along altitudinal gradients in two mountain localities, the Swartberg and Baviaanskloof, in the southern Cape in summer 1977–1978. Species composition varied according to altitude and aspect with a total catch of six rodent and two shrew species. Correlations were found between abundance of rodent species and habitat variables, particularly vegetation structure and the cover of rock and bare soil. Rodent species diversity was negatively correlated with the proportion of total foliage at low to mid heights (40 - 80 cm). Factors controlling apparent habitat preferences are discussed together with modes of rodent niche separation. Extrapolation of the results is limited by the single season and restricted geographical coverage of the survey

    Teaching Teachers for the Future (TTF) Project: Development of the TTF TPACK survey instrument

    This paper presents a summary of the key findings of the TTF TPACK Survey developed and administered for the Teaching the Teachers for the Future (TTF) Project implemented in 2011. The TTF Project, funded by an Australian Government ICT Innovation Fund grant, involved all 39 Australian Higher Education Institutions which provide initial teacher education. TTF data collections were undertaken at the end of Semester 1 (T1) and at the end of Semester 2 (T2) in 2011. A total of 12881 participants completed the first survey (T1) and 5809 participants completed the second survey (T2). Groups of like-named items from the T1 survey were subject to a battery of complementary data analysis techniques. The psychometric properties of the four scales: Confidence - teacher items; Usefulness - teacher items; Confidence - student items; Usefulness- student items, were confirmed both at T1 and T2. Among the key findings summarised, at the national level, the scale: Confidence to use ICT as a teacher showed measurable growth across the whole scale from T1 to T2, and the scale: Confidence to facilitate student use of ICT also showed measurable growth across the whole scale from T1 to T2.     Exactly Solvable Model of Monomer-Monomer Reactions on a Two-Dimensional Random Catalytic Substrate

    We present an \textit{exactly solvable} model of a monomer-monomer A+B→∅A + B \to \emptyset reaction on a 2D inhomogeneous, catalytic substrate and study the equilibrium properties of the two-species adsorbate. The substrate contains randomly placed catalytic bonds of mean density qq which connect neighboring adsorption sites. The interacting AA and BB (monomer) species undergo continuous exchanges with corresponding adjacent gaseous reservoirs. A reaction A+B→∅A + B \to \emptyset takes place instantaneously if AA and BB particles occupy adsorption sites connected by a catalytic bond. We find that for the case of \textit{annealed} disorder in the placement of the catalytic bonds the reaction model under study can be mapped onto the general spin S=1S = 1 (GS1) model. Here we concentrate on a particular case in which the model reduces to an exactly solvable Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model (T. Horiguchi, Phys. Lett. A {\bf 113}, 425 (1986); F.Y. Wu, Phys. Lett. A, {\bf 116}, 245 (1986)) and derive an exact expression for the disorder-averaged equilibrium pressure of the two-species adsorbate. We show that at equal partial vapor pressures of the AA and BB species this system exhibits a second-order phase transition which reflects a spontaneous symmetry breaking with large fluctuations and progressive coverage of the entire substrate by either one of the species.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys.
