    Comparison of Transfer-to-Continuum and Eikonal Models of Projectile Fragmentation Reactions

    Spectroscopic properties of nuclei are accessible with projectile fragmentation reactions, but approximations made in the reaction theory can limit the accuracy of the determinations. We examine here two models that have rather different approximations for the nucleon wave function, the target interaction, and the treatment of the finite duration of the reaction. The nucleon-target interaction is treated differently in the eikonal and the transfer-to-continuum model, but the differences are more significant for light targets. We propose a new parameterization with that in mind. We also propose a new formula to calculate the amplitude that combines the better treatment of the wave function in the eikonal model with the better treatment of the target interaction in the transfer-to-continuum model.Comment: 21 pages, latex file including 3 tables. 5 figures.     A joint probabilistic index for objective drought identification: the case study of Haiti

    Abstract. Since drought is a multifaceted phenomenon, more than one variable should be considered for a proper understanding of such an extreme event in order to implement adequate risk mitigation strategies such as weather or agricultural indices insurance programmes or disaster risk financing tools. This paper proposes a new composite drought index that accounts for both meteorological and agricultural drought conditions by combining in a probabilistic framework two consolidated drought indices: the standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the vegetation health index (VHI). The new index, called the probabilistic precipitation vegetation index (PPVI), is scalable, transferable all over the globe and can be updated in near real time. Furthermore, it is a remote-sensing product, since precipitation is retrieved from satellite data and the VHI is a remote-sensing index. In addition, a set of rules to objectively identify drought events is developed and implemented. Both the index and the set of rules have been applied to Haiti. The performance of the PPVI has been evaluated by means of a receiver operating characteristic curve and compared to that of the SPI and VHI considered separately. The new index outperformed SPI and VHI both in drought identification and characterization, thus revealing potential for an effective implementation within drought early-warning systems

    Single-/Few-Layer Graphene as Long-Lasting Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

    The development of carbonaceous materials electro-catalytically active for water splitting reactions could overcome multiple disadvantages of metallic catalysts, including high cost, low selectivity, poor durability, and susceptibility to evolved gas. General guidelines to design carbon-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts still remain a topic of debate. Here, we identify single-/few-layer graphene flakes with defective edges (SLG/FLG-DE), produced by hydrogen peroxide-assisted cosolvent liquid phase exfoliation, as durable and efficient HER electrocatalysts. The SLG/FLG-DE display overpotentials at 10 mA cm(-2) of 55 and 85 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH solutions, respectively, as well as a durable HER activity over 200 h

    Curcumin loaded polymeric vs. Lipid nanoparticles: Antioxidant effect on normal and hypoxic olfactory ensheathing cells

    Background: Curcumin (Cur) shows anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on central nervous system diseases. The aim of this study was to develop Cur-loaded polymeric and lipid nanoparticles for intranasal delivery to enhance its stability and increase antioxidant effect on olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs). Methods: The nanosuspensions were subjected to physico-chemical and technological evaluation through photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and UV-spectrophotometry. The cytotoxicity studies of nanosuspensions were carried out on OECs. A viability test was performed after 24 h of exposure of OECs to unloaded and curcumin-loaded nanosuspensions. The potential protective effect of Cur was assessed on hypoxic OECs cells. Uptake studies were performed on the same cell cultures. Thermal analysis was performed to evaluate potential interaction of Cur with a 1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) biomembrane model. Results: PCS analysis indicated that lipid and polymeric nanosuspensions showed a mean size of 127.10 and 338.20 nm, respectively, high homogeneity and negative zeta potential. Incorporation of Cur into both nanocarriers increased drug stability up to 135 days in cryoprotected freeze-dried nanosuspensions. Cell viability was improved when hypoxic OECs were treated with Cur-loaded polymeric and lipid nanosuspensions compared with the control. Conclusions: Both nanocarriers could improve the stability of Cur as demonstrated by technological studies. Biological studies revealed that both nanocarriers could be used to deliver Cur by intranasal administration for brain targeting

    Dynamical description of the breakup of one-neutron halo nuclei 11Be and 19C

    We investigate the breakup of the one-neutron halo nuclei 11Be and 19C within a dynamical model of the continuum excitation of the projectile. The time evolution of the projectile in coordinate space is described by solving the three-dimensional time dependent Schroedinger equation, treating the projectile-target (both Coulomb and nuclear) interaction as a time dependent external perturbation. The pure Coulomb breakup dominates the relative energy spectra of the fragments in the peak region, while the nuclear breakup is important at higher relative energies. The coherent sum of the two contributions provides a good overall description of the experimental spectra. Cross sections of the first order perturbation theory are derived as a limit of our dynamical model. The dynamical effects are found to be of the order of 10-15% for the beam energies in the range of 60 - 80 MeV/nucleon. A comparison of our results with those of a post form distorted wave Born approximation shows that the magnitudes of the higher order effects are dependent on the theoretical model.Comment: 15 pages, ReVTeX, 5 figures, typos corrected, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Essential oils: pharmaceutical applications and encapsulation strategies into lipid-based delivery systems

    Essential oils are being studied for more than 60 years, but a growing interest has emerged in the recent decades due to a desire for a rediscovery of natural remedies. Essential oils are known for millennia and, already in prehistoric times, they were used for medicinal and ritual purposes due to their therapeutic properties. Using a variety of methods refined over the centuries, essential oils are extracted from plant raw materials: the choice of the extraction method is decisive, since it determines the type, quantity, and stereochemical structure of the essential oil molecules. To these components belong all properties that make essential oils so interesting for pharmaceutical uses; the most investigated ones are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound-healing, and anxiolytic activities. However, the main limitations to their use are their hydrophobicity, instability, high volatility, and risk of toxicity. A successful strategy to overcome these limitations is the encapsulation within delivery systems, which enable the increase of essential oils bioavailability and improve their chemical stability, while reducing their volatility and toxicity.     The optical potential of 6^{6}He in the eikonal approximation

    The new data of the elastic scattering of 6^{6}He+12^{12}C at about 40 MeV/nucleon are analyzed in the eikonal approximation. The 6^{6}He+12^{12}C phase-shift function is evaluated completely without any {\it ad hoc} assumption by a Monte Carlo integration, which makes it possible to use a realistic 6-nucleon wave function for a halo nucleus 6^{6}He. The effect of the breakup of 6^6He on the elastic differential cross sections as well as the optical potential is studied at different energies from 40 to 800 MeV/nucleon.     Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) and metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 (mGlu5) control stress granule formation in astrocytes

    Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a common form of intellectual disability and autism caused by the lack of Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein (FMRP), an RNA-binding protein involved in RNA transport and protein synthesis. Upon cellular stress, global protein synthesis is blocked and mRNAs are recruited into stress granules (SGs), together with RNA-binding proteins including FMRP. Activation of group-I metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors stimulates FMRP-mediated mRNA transport and protein synthesis, but their role in SGs formation is unexplored. To this aim, we pre-treated wild type (WT) and Fmr1 knockout (KO) cultured astrocytes with the group-I-mGlu receptor agonist (S)-3,5-Dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG) and exposed them to sodium arsenite (NaAsO2), a widely used inducer of SGs formation. In WT cultures the activation of group-I mGlu receptors reduced SGs formation and recruitment of FMRP into SGs, and also attenuated phosphorylation of eIF2α, a key event crucially involved in SGs formation and inhibition of protein synthesis. In contrast, Fmr1 KO astrocytes, which exhibited a lower number of SGs than WT astrocytes, did not respond to agonist stimulation. Interestingly, the mGlu5 receptor negative allosteric modulator (NAM) 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)pyridine (MPEP) antagonized DHPG-mediated SGs reduction in WT and reversed SGs formation in Fmr1 KO cultures. Our findings reveal a novel function of mGlu5 receptor as modulator of SGs formation and open new perspectives for understanding cellular response to stress in FXS pathophysiology

    Gravitational sliding of the Mt. Etna massif along a sloping basement

    Geological field evidence and laboratory modelling indicate that volcanoes constructed on slopes slide downhill. If this happens on an active volcano, then the movement will distort deformation data and thus potentially compromise interpretation. Our recent GPS measurements demonstrate that the entire edifice of Mt. Etna is sliding to the ESE, the overall direction of slope of its complex, rough sedimentary basement. We report methods of discriminating the sliding vector from other deformation processes and of measuring its velocity, which averaged 14 mm year−1 during four intervals between 2001 and 2012. Though sliding of one sector of a volcano due to flank instability is widespread and well-known, this is the first time basement sliding of an entire active volcano has been directly observed. This is important because the geological record shows that such sliding volcanoes are prone to devastating sector collapse on the downslope side, and whole volcano migration should be taken into account when assessing future collapse hazard. It is also important in eruption forecasting, as the sliding vector needs to be allowed for when interpreting deformation events that take place above the sliding basement within the superstructure of the active volcano, as might occur with dyke intrusion or inflation/deflation episodes
