    Two-fermion bound state in a Bose-Einstein condensate

    A nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation is derived for the dynamics of a beam of ultracold fermionic atoms traversing a Bose-Einstein condensate. The condensate phonon modes are shown to provide a nonlinear medium for the fermionic atoms. A two-fermion bound state is predicted to arise, and the signature of the bound state in a nonlinear atom optics experiment is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

    Superfluid pairing in a polarized dipolar Fermi gas

    We calculate the critical temperature of a superfluid phase transition in a polarized Fermi gas of dipolar particles. In this case the order parameter is anisotropic and has a nontrivial energy dependence. Cooper pairs do not have a definite value of the angular momentum and are coherent superpositions of all odd angular momenta. Our results describe prospects for achieving the superfluid transition in single-component gases of fermionic polar molecules.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Projected environmental shifts under climate change: European trends and regional impacts

    Potential impacts of climate change on ecosystems and the environment are generally assessed by summarizing climate change scenarios for broad regions (for example countries), or by specific modelling exercises. This paper presents an alternative approach for summarizing climate change impacts on the European environment, by linking climate change scenarios to recognized environmental divisions. Sixteen climate scenarios from four general circulation models were therefore linked to 84 statistically derived strata sharing common environmental features. In this way, the future distribution of the strata, as defined by their climate characteristics, were quantified and mapped. The results show that Europe is likely to experience major environmental shifts, with pronounced regional variations. As expected, environmental strata shift northwards. In particular the southern Mediterranean strata are projected to expand, whereas Atlantic environments remain much more stable. Alpine and Mediterranean mountain environments decline dramatically. However, the Scandinavian zones show no consistent pattern of change. More detailed analysis of four sample regions shows that the impacts of the projected shifts will largely depend on regional characteristics. Environmental conservation, regional assessments and scenario development could therefore be facilitated by combining relevant regional datasets (for example for vegetation, land cover and species distribution) with the shifting environmental strat

    Langevin equations for interacting fermions and Cooper-like pairing in trapped one-dimensional fermions

    Momentum correlations in a one-dimensional equilibrium ensemble of trapped fermions, with a point interaction between particles of opposite spin have been studied. In the degenerate regime correlations were observed between fermions with opposite spins and momenta, similar to Cooper pairing. These correlations appear as soon as the temperature is below the Fermi energy, which is a much less stringent condition than that of the BCS transition proper. Calculations are carried out in both perturbative and non-perturbative regimes. To achieve the latter. it is shown that interacting fermionic dynamics may be solved as a stochastic linear transformation of Grassmann algebra generators, much in the way random c-number paths are introduced in the conventional quantum stochastics of bosons. Importantly, the method thus emerging is inherently free of the sign problem
