    A numerical study of a method for measuring the effective in situ sound absorption coefficient

    The accuracy of a method [Wijnant et al., “Development and applica- tion of a new method for the in-situ measurement of sound absorption”, ISMA 31, Leuven, Belgium (2010).], for measurement of the effective area-averaged in situ sound absorption coefficient is investigated. Based on a local plane wave assump- tion, this method can be applied to sound fields for which a model is not available. Investigations were carried out by means of finite element simulations for a typical case. The results show that the method is a promising method for determining the effective area-averaged in situ sound absorption coefficient in complex sound fields

    An infrared radiation detector including a cadmium sulfide platelet having a cathode formed on one of its ends and an anode formed on its other end is presented. The platelet is suitably doped such that stationary high-field domains are formed adjacent the cathode when based in the negative differential conductivity region. A negative potential is applied to the cathode such that a high-field domain is formed adjacent to the cathode. A potential measuring probe is located between the cathode and the anode at the edge of the high-field domain and means are provided for measuring the potential at the probe whereby this measurement is indicative of the infrared radiation striking the platelet

    The coupling of a hearing aid loudspeaker membrane to visco-thermal air layers

    Hearing aids and their components are becoming smaller. This presents new problems for the acoustical components, such as the loudspeaker. A circular membrane of a hearing aid loudspeaker is modeled in this paper. Neglecting air influences, the membrane and its suspension behave as a mass spring system. However, under operating conditions, thin layers of air on both sides of the membrane influence its behavior. Air can enter and leave these layers at certain locations on the circular edge of the layer. Since these air layers are thin, visco-thermal effects may have to be taken into account. Therefore, the air layers are not modeled by the wave equation, but by the low reduced frequency model that takes these visco-thermal effects into account. The equations of this model are solved in a polar coordinate system, using a wave-based method. The other acoustical parts of the hearing aid loudspeaker, and the membrane itself are modeled by simple lumped models. The emphasis in this paper is on the coupling of the viscothermal air layer model to the mechanical model of the membrane. Coupling of the air layer to other acoustical parts by using an impedance as boundary condition for the layer model, is also described. The resulting model is verified by experiments. The model and the measurements match reasonably well, considering the level of approximation with lumped parts

    Field-Effect Transistors on Tetracene Single Crystals

    We report on the fabrication and electrical characterization of field-effect transistors at the surface of tetracene single crystals. We find that the mobility of these transistors reaches the room-temperature value of $0.4 \ cm^2/Vs$. The non-monotonous temperature dependence of the mobility, its weak gate voltage dependence, as well as the sharpness of the subthreshold slope confirm the high quality of single-crystal devices. This is due to the fabrication process that does not substantially affect the crystal quality.Comment: Accepted by Appl. Phys.     HISTOLOGÍA DE HUESOS HUMANOS SECOS (UNA REVISIÓN)

    Despite archaeological preservation conditions, the histomorphology of human dry bone still contains useful information on the physiological and pathological status of deceased individuals. Histology can therefore be a helpful addition to routine archaeological methods. But practice has shown  that, for many archaeologists, unfamiliarity with this technique shaped a pointless obstacle to add it to their tool box. Thus, after having addressed the restrictions associated with histological analysis in general, we will show  that the preparation  of sections/slides  does not need to be diff icult, expensive or time-consuming.  Then  we  will  provide  an introduction  to the histological  application  of assessing age at death of the deceased.  It’s must be its theoretical basis, its value in comparison  to other  methods  and  its limits  are  discussed. Finally, we will elaborate on the effectiveness of histology as an indicator of pathological processes, and explain that only a small number of disorders have distinct ‘pathognonomic’ microscopic features. In  all other cases, the histological findings must be combined with gross anatomical and radiological findings from the same individual to come to a conclusive diagnosis  or to a shortened  list  of differential  (alternative)  diagnoses.Independientemente de las condiciones de conservación arqueológica, la histomorfología de hueso seco humano conserva información útil sobre el estado f isiológico y patológico de las personas fallecidas. Por lo tanto la utilización del análisis histológico puede ser una adición útil a los métodos arqueológicos de rutina. No obstante, en la práctica se ha demostrado, que para muchos arqueólogos la falta de familiaridad con esta técnica constituye un obstáculo para su utilización. Por lo tanto, después de haber abordado  las restricciones  asociadas  al análisis histológico  en general, vamos a demostrar que la preparación de secciones / diapositivas no tiene por qué ser difícil, costoso o requerir mucho tiempo para su utilización. En este trabajo se expone una intro- ducción a la aplicación de la evaluación histológica para poder determinar la edad de la persona fallecida. Se discute su base teórica, su valor en comparación  con otros métodos y sus límites. Por último, vamos a tratar la ef icacia de la histología como indicador de procesos patológicos y  mostrar  que  sólo  un  pequeño  número  de  trastornos  tienen  características  microscópicas ‘patognonomicas’  diferenciadas.  En todos  los demás  casos  los datos  histológicos  deben  ser combinados  con los resultados anatómicos macroscópicos  y radiológicos  del mismo individuo para obtener  un diagnóstico concluyente o una lista abreviada de diferentes (alternativos) diagnósticos

    Urinary excretion of RAS, BMP, and WNT pathway components in diabetic kidney disease.

    Abstract The renin-angiotensin system (RAS), bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), and WNT pathways are involved in pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). This study characterized assays for urinary angiotensinogen (AGT), gremlin-1, and matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP-7), components of the RAS, BMP, and WNT pathways and examined their excretion in DKD. We measured urine AGT, gremlin-1, and MMP-7 in individuals with type 1 diabetes and prevalent DKD (n = 20) or longstanding (n = 61) or new-onset (n = 10) type 1 diabetes without DKD. These urine proteins were also quantified in type 2 DKD (n = 11) before and after treatment with candesartan. The utilized immunoassays had comparable inter- and intra-assay and intraindividual variation to assays used for urine albumin. Median (IQR) urine AGT concentrations were 226.0 (82.1, 550.3) and 13.0 (7.8, 20.0) μg/g creatinine in type 1 diabetes with and without DKD, respectively (P < 0.001). Median (IQR) urine gremlin-1 concentrations were 48.6 (14.2, 254.1) and 3.6 (1.7, 5.5) μg/g, respectively (P < 0.001). Median (IQR) urine MMP-7 concentrations were 6.0 (3.8, 10.5) and 1.0 (0.4, 2.9) μg/g creatinine, respectively (P < 0.001). Treatment with candesartan was associated with a reduction in median (IQR) urine AGT/creatinine from 23.5 (1.6, 105.1) to 2.0 (1.4, 13.7) μg/g, which did not reach statistical significance. Urine gremlin-1 and MMP-7 excretion did not decrease with candesartan. In conclusion, DKD is characterized by markedly elevated urine AGT, MMP-7, and gremlin-1. AGT decreased in response to RAS inhibition, suggesting that this marker reflects therapeutic response. Urinary components of the RAS, BMP, and WNT pathways may identify risk of DKD and aid development of novel therapeutics

    Charging of single Si nanocrystals by atomic force microscopy

    Conducting-tip atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to electronically probe silicon nanocrystals on an insulating substrate. The nanocrystal samples were produced by aerosol techniques and size classified; nanocrystal size can be controlled in the size range of 2-50 nm with a size variation of less than 10%. Using a conducting tip, the charge was injected directly into the nanocrystals, and the subsequent dissipation of the charge was monitored. Estimates of the injected charge can be made by comparison of the data with an intermittent contact mode model of the AFM response to the electrostatic force produced by the stored charge
