Dijet imbalance in hadronic collisions
The imbalance of dijets produced in hadronic collisions has been used to
extract the average transverse momentum of partons inside the hadrons. In this
paper we discuss new contributions to the dijet imbalance that could complicate
or even hamper this extraction. They are due to polarization of initial state
partons inside unpolarized hadrons that can arise in the presence of nonzero
parton transverse momentum. Transversely polarized quarks and linearly
polarized gluons produce specific azimuthal dependences of the two jets that in
principle are not suppressed. Their effects cannot be isolated just by looking
at the angular deviation from the back-to-back situation, rather they enter jet
broadening observables. In this way they directly affect the extraction of the
average transverse momentum of unpolarized partons that is thought to be
extracted. We discuss appropriately weighted cross sections to isolate the

High field CdS detector for infrared radiation
An infrared radiation detector including a cadmium sulfide platelet having a cathode formed on one of its ends and an anode formed on its other end is presented. The platelet is suitably doped such that stationary high-field domains are formed adjacent the cathode when based in the negative differential conductivity region. A negative potential is applied to the cathode such that a high-field domain is formed adjacent to the cathode. A potential measuring probe is located between the cathode and the anode at the edge of the high-field domain and means are provided for measuring the potential at the probe whereby this measurement is indicative of the infrared radiation striking the platelet
Phenomenological Issues in Supersymmetry with Non-holomorphic Soft Breaking
We present a through discussion of motivations for and phenomenological
issues in supersymmetric models with minimal matter content and non-holomorphic
soft-breaking terms. Using the unification of the gauge couplings and assuming
SUSY is broken with non-standard soft terms, we provide semi-analytic solutions
of the RGEs for low and high choices of tan\beta which can be used to study the
phenomenology in detail. We also present a generic form of RGIs in mSUGRA
framework which can be used to derive new relations in addition to those
existing in the literature. Our results are mostly presented with respect to
the conventional minimal supersymmetric model for ease of comparison.Comment: 34 page
Monitoring the Variable Interstellar Absorption toward HD 219188 with HST/STIS
We discuss the results of continued spectroscopic monitoring of the variable
intermediate-velocity (IV) absorption at v = -38 km/s toward HD 219188. After
reaching maxima in mid-2000, the column densities of both Na I and Ca II in
that IV component declined by factors >= 2 by the end of 2006. Comparisons
between HST/STIS echelle spectra obtained in 2001, 2003, and 2004 and HST/GHRS
echelle spectra obtained in 1994--1995 indicate the following: (1) The
absorption from the dominant species S II, O I, Si II, and Fe II is roughly
constant in all four sets of spectra -- suggesting that the total N(H) and the
(mild) depletions have not changed significantly over a period of nearly ten
years. (2) The column densities of the trace species C I (both ground and
excited fine-structure states) and of the excited state C II* all increased by
factors of 2--5 between 1995 and 2001 -- implying increases in the hydrogen
density n_H (from about 20 cm^{-3} to about 45 cm^{-3}) and in the electron
density n_e (by a factor >= 3) over that 6-year period. (3) The column
densities of C I and C II* -- and the corresponding inferred n_H and n_e --
then decreased slightly between 2001 and 2004. (4) The changes in C I and C II*
are very similar to those seen for Na I and Ca II. The relatively low total
N(H) and the modest n_H suggest that the -38 km/s cloud toward HD 219188 is not
a very dense knot or filament. Partial ionization of hydrogen appears to be
responsible for the enhanced abundances of Na I, C I, Ca II, and C II*. In this
case, the variations in those species appear to reflect differences in density
and ionization [and not N(H)] over scales of tens of AU.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures, aastex, accepted to Ap
No Evidence for Gamma-Ray Burst/Abell Cluster or Gamma- Ray Burst/Radio-Quiet Quasar Correlations
We examine the recent claims that cosmic gamma-ray bursts are associated with
either radio-quiet quasars or Abell clusters. These associations were based on
positional coincidences between cataloged quasars or Abell clusters, and
selected events from the BATSE 3B catalog of gamma-ray bursts. We use a larger
sample of gamma-ray bursts with more accurate positions, obtained by the 3rd
Interplanetary Network, to re-evaluate these possible associations. We find no

Semiclassical corrections to the interaction energy of a hard-sphere Boltzmann gas
Quantum effects in statistical mechanics are important when the thermal
wavelength is of the order of, or greater than, the mean interatomic spacing.
This is examined at depth taking the example of a hard-sphere Boltzmann gas.
Using the virial expansion for the equation of state, it is shown that the
interaction energy of a classical hard-sphere gas is exactly zero. When the
(second) virial coefficient of such a gas is obtained quantum mechanically,
however, the quantum contribution to the interaction energy is shown to be
substantial. The importance of the semiclassical corrections to the interaction

The Ulysses Supplement to the BATSE 4Br Catalog of Cosmic Gamma-Ray Bursts
We present Interplanetary Network localization information for 147 gamma-ray
bursts observed by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment between the end of
the 3rd BATSE catalog and the end of the 4th BATSE catalog, obtained by
analyzing the arrival times of these bursts at the Ulysses and Compton
Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) spacecraft. For any given burst observed by these
two spacecraft, arrival time analysis (or "triangulation") results in an
annulus of possible arrival directions whose half-width varies between 7
arcseconds and 2.3 degrees, depending on the intensity and time history of the
burst, and the distance of the Ulysses spacecraft from Earth. This annulus
generally intersects the BATSE error circle, resulting in an average reduction

The Use of Agriculture System Modeling for Crop Management: Case Study in Pusaka Negara(penggunaan Model Sistim Pertanian Untuk Pengelolaan Tanaman :Studi Kasus Pusakanegara)
Agriculture system modeling is an effective tool in assisting agriculture practitioners to make crop calendar and to set up crop management strategies. Integration of the toll with climate forecast modeling will provide greater help for decision makers and farmers to set up better drought coping strategies. However the adoption of this tool is constrained by limited availability of long historical daily climatic data. This study indicates that the use of climatic data generator can solve this problem. Application of this approach at Pusaka Negara was assessed. It is suggested that when April SOI phase is rapidly falling or constantly negative (indicating EL-Nino years), keeping planting rice in the dry season is not recommended. Farmers may need to change their crops to non-rice crops requiring less water. The latest planting time for these crops in the El-Nino years should be first week of May. If the harvesting of first rice crops occur after 1st week of May, it is suggested that the land should be fallowed.---------------------------------------------------------------------Pemodelan sistim pertanian merupakan salah salat alat yang efektif untuk membantu pelaksana lapang dalam menyusun kalender tanam atau mengatur strategi pengelolaan tanaman. Hasil penelitian merekimendaiskan ika kondisi SOI pada bulan April turun secara cepat atau konstan negatif (mengindikasikan El Nino), penanaman padi pada musim kemarau tidak direkomendasikan. Petani disarankan untuk mengganti tanamannya dengan tanaman selain padi yang memerlukan lebih sedikit air. Waktu penanaman paling terakhir pada tahun El Nino adalah minggu pertama bulan Mei.
