    Analytical description of spin-Rabi oscillation controlled electronic transitions rates between weakly coupled pairs of paramagnetic states with S=1/2

    We report on an analytical description of spin-dependent electronic transition rates which are controlled by a radiation induced spin-Rabi oscillation of weakly spin-exchange and spin-dipolar coupled paramagnetic states (S=1/2). The oscillation components (the Fourier content) of the net transition rates within spin-pair ensembles are derived for randomly distributed spin resonances with account of a possible correlation between the two distributions that correspond to the two individual pair partners. The results presented here show that when electrically or optically detected Rabi spectroscopy is conducted under an increasing driving field B_ 1, the Rabi spectrum evolves from a single resonance peak at s=\Omega_R, where \Omega_R=\gamma B_1 is the Rabi frequency (\gamma is the gyromagnetic ratio), to three peaks at s= \Omega_R, s=2\Omega_R, and at low s<< \Omega_R. The crossover between the two regimes takes place when \Omega_R exceeds the expectation value \delta_0 of the difference of the Zeeman energies within the pairs, which corresponds to the broadening of the magnetic resonance lines in the presence of disorder caused by hyperfine field or distributions of Lande g-factors. We capture this crossover by analytically calculating the shapes of all three peaks at arbitrary relation between \Omega_R and \delta_0.     Wintertime polynya structure and variability from thermal remote sensing and seal-borne observations at Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica

With the potential to impact ice-shelf stability, persistent polynyas (open-water areas surrounded by sea ice, persisting for multiple years at the same location) at the edge of many ice-shelf fronts, are maintained by winds and/or ocean heat, and are locations of strong ice-ocean-atmosphere interactions. However, in situ observations of polynyas are sparse due to the logistical constraints of collecting Antarctic field measurements. Here, we used wintertime (May–August) temperature and salinity observations derived from seal-borne tags deployed in 2014, 2019, and 2020, in conjunction with thermal imagery from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) to investigate the spatial, temporal, and thermal structural variability of polynyas near Pine Island Glacier (PIG). Across the three winters considered, there were 148 anomalously warm (>3σ from background) seal dives near the PIG ice front, including 24 dives that coincided with MODIS images with minimal cloud cover that also showed a warm surface temperature anomaly. These warm surface temperatures correlated with ocean temperatures down to 150 m depth or deeper, depending on the year, suggesting that MODISderived surface thermal anomalies can be used for monitoring polynya presence and structure during polar night. The finer spatial resolution (100 m) of TIRS wintertime thermal imagery captures more detailed thermal structural variability within these polynyas, which may provide year-round insight into sub-ice-shelf processes if this dataset is collected operationally.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Detection of inspiratory recruitment of atelectasis by automated lung sound analysis as compared to four-dimensional computed tomography in a porcine lung injury model

    Background: Cyclic recruitment and de-recruitment of atelectasis (c-R/D) is a contributor to ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). Bedside detection of this dynamic process could improve ventilator management. This study investigated the potential of automated lung sound analysis to detect c-R/D as compared to four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT). Methods: In ten piglets (25 ± 2 kg), acoustic measurements from 34 thoracic piezoelectric sensors (Meditron ASA, Norway) were performed, time synchronized to 4DCT scans, at positive end-expiratory pressures of 0, 5, 10, and 15 cmH2O during mechanical ventilation, before and after induction of c-R/D by surfactant washout. 4DCT was post-processed for within-breath variation in atelectatic volume (Δ atelectasis) as a measure of c-R/D. Sound waveforms were evaluated for: 1) dynamic crackle energy (dCE): filtered crackle sounds (600–700 Hz); 2) fast Fourier transform area (FFT area): spectral content above 500 Hz in frequency and above −70 dB in amplitude in proportion to the total amount of sound above −70 dB amplitude; and 3) dynamic spectral coherence (dSC): variation in acoustical homogeneity over time. Parameters were analyzed for global, nondependent, central, and dependent lung areas. Results: In healthy lungs, negligible values of Δ atelectasis, dCE, and FFT area occurred. In lavage lung injury, the novel dCE parameter showed the best correlation to Δ atelectasis in dependent lung areas (R2 = 0.88) where c-R/D took place. dCE was superior to FFT area analysis for each lung region examined. The analysis of dSC could predict the lung regions where c-R/D originated. Conclusions: c-R/D is associated with the occurrence of fine crackle sounds as demonstrated by dCE analysis. Standardized computer-assisted analysis of dCE and dSC seems to be a promising method for depicting c-R/D

    Early and efficient detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum by microscopic observation of broth cultures.

    Early, efficient and inexpensive methods for the detection of pulmonary tuberculosis are urgently needed for effective patient management as well as to interrupt transmission. These methods to detect M. tuberculosis in a timely and affordable way are not yet widely available in resource-limited settings. In a developing-country setting, we prospectively evaluated two methods for culturing and detecting M. tuberculosis in sputum. Sputum samples were cultured in liquid assay (micro broth culture) in microplate wells and growth was detected by microscopic observation, or in Löwenstein-Jensen (LJ) solid media where growth was detected by visual inspection for colonies. Sputum samples were collected from 321 tuberculosis (TB) suspects attending Bugando Medical Centre, in Mwanza, Tanzania, and were cultured in parallel. Pulmonary tuberculosis cases were diagnosed using the American Thoracic Society diagnostic standards. There were a total of 200 (62.3%) pulmonary tuberculosis cases. Liquid assay with microscopic detection detected a significantly higher proportion of cases than LJ solid culture: 89.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 84.7% to 93.3%) versus 77.0% (95% CI, 71.2% to 82.8%) (p = 0.0007). The median turn around time to diagnose tuberculosis was significantly shorter for micro broth culture than for the LJ solid culture, 9 days (interquartile range [IQR] 7-13), versus 21 days (IQR 14-28) (p<0.0001). The cost for micro broth culture (labor inclusive) in our study was US 4.56persample,versusUS4.56 per sample, versus US 11.35 per sample for the LJ solid culture. The liquid assay (micro broth culture) is an early, feasible, and inexpensive method for detection of pulmonary tuberculosis in resource limited settings

    Evaluation of Xpert® MTB/RIF and ustar easyNAT™ TB IAD for diagnosis of tuberculous lymphadenitis of children in Tanzania : a prospective descriptive study

    Fine needle aspiration biopsy has become a standard approach for diagnosis of peripheral tuberculous lymphadenitis. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF and Ustar EasyNAT TB IAD nucleic acid amplification assays, against acid-fast bacilli microscopy, cytology and mycobacterial culture for the diagnosis of TB lymphadenitis in children from a TB-endemic setting in Tanzania.; Children of 8 weeks to 16 years of age, suspected of having TB lymphadenitis, were recruited at a district hospital in Tanzania. Fine needle aspirates of lymph nodes were analysed using acid-fast bacilli microscopy, liquid TB culture, cytology, Xpert MTB/RIF and EasyNAT. Latent class analysis and comparison against a composite reference standard comprising "culture and/or cytology" was done, to assess the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF and EasyNAT for the diagnosis of TB lymphadenitis.; Seventy-nine children were recruited; 4 were excluded from analysis. Against a composite reference standard of culture and/or cytology, Xpert MTB/RIF and EasyNAT had a sensitivity and specificity of 58 % and 93 %; and 19 % and 100 % respectively. Relative to latent class definitions, cytology had a sensitivity of 100 % and specificity of 94.7 %.; Combining clinical assessment, cytology and Xpert MTB/RIF may allow for a rapid and accurate diagnosis of childhood TB lymphadenitis. Larger diagnostic evaluation studies are recommended to validate these findings and on Xpert MTB/RIF to assess its use as a solitary initial test for TB lymphadenitis in children
