Numerical simulations of MHD flow transition in ducts with conducting Hartmann walls : Limtech Project A3 D4 (TUI) (KIT Scientific Reports ; 7713)
Pressure-driven magnetohydrodynamic duct flows in a transverse, wall-parallel and uniform field have been studied by direct numerical. The conducting Hartmann walls give rise to a laminar velocity distribution with strong jets at the side walls, which are susceptible to flow instability. The onset of time-dependent flow as well as fully developed turbulent flow have been explored in a wide range of parameters
Transition to turbulence in Hunt's flow in a moderate magnetic field
Pressure-driven magnetohydrodynamic duct flow in a transverse uniform magnetic field is studied by direct numerical simulation. The electric boundary conditions correspond to Hunt's flow with perfectly insulating walls parallel to the magnetic field (sidewalls) and perfectly conducting walls perpendicular to the magnetic field (Hartmann walls). The velocity distribution exhibits strong jets at the sidewalls, which are susceptible to instability even at low Reynolds numbers Re. We explore the onset of time-dependent flow and transition to states with evolved turbulence for a moderate Hartmann number . At low Re time-dependence appears in the form of elongated Ting-Walker vortices at the sidewalls of the duct, which, upon increasing Re, develop into more complex structures with higher energy and then the sidewall jets partially detach from the walls. At high values of Re jet detachments disappear and the flow consists of two turbulent jets and nearly laminar core. It is also demonstrated that, there is a range of Re, where Hunt's flow exhibits a pronounced hysteresis behavior, so that different unsteady states can be observed for the same flow parameters. In this range multiple states may develop and co-exist, depending on the initial conditions
Discrete Model of Ideological Struggle Accounting for Migration
A discrete in time model of ideological competition is formulated taking into
account population migration. The model is based on interactions between global
populations of non-believers and followers of different ideologies. The complex
dynamics of the attracting manifolds is investigated.
Conversion from one ideology to another by means of (i) mass media influence
and (ii) interpersonal relations is considered. Moreover a different birth rate
is assumed for different ideologies, the rate being assumed to be positive for
the reference population, made of initially non-believers. Ideological
competition can happen in one or several regions in space. In the latter case,
migration of non-believers and adepts is allowed; this leads to an enrichment
of the ideological dynamics. Finally, the current ideological situation in the
Arab countries and China is commented upon from the point of view of the
presently developed mathematical model. The massive forced conversion by
Ottoman Turks in the Balkans is briefly discussed.Comment: 24 pages, with 5 figures and 52 refs.; prepared for a Special issue

Experimental Separation of Rashba and Dresselhaus Spin-Splittings in Semiconductor Quantum Wells
The relative strengths of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms describing the
spin-orbit coupling in semiconductor quantum well (QW) structures are extracted
from photocurrent measurements on n-type InAs QWs containing a two-dimensional
electron gas (2DEG). This novel technique makes use of the angular distribution
of the spin-galvanic effect at certain directions of spin orientation in the
plane of a QW. The ratio of the relevant Rashba and Dresselhaus coefficients
can be deduced directly from experiment and does not relay on theoretically
obtained quantities. Thus our experiments open a new way to determine the
different contributions to spin-orbit coupling
Skipping orbits and enhanced resistivity in large-diameter InAs/GaSb antidot lattices
We investigated the magnetotransport properties of high-mobility InAs/GaSb
antidot lattices. In addition to the usual commensurability features at low
magnetic field we found a broad maximum of classical origin around 2.5 T. The
latter can be ascribed to a class of rosetta type orbits encircling a single
antidot. This is shown by both a simple transport calculation based on a
classical Kubo formula and an analysis of the Poincare surface of section at
different magnetic field values. At low temperatures we observe weak
1/B-periodic oscillations superimposed on the classical maximum.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Postscript figures, REVTeX, submitted to Phys Rev
Spectroscopic determination of hole density in the ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs
The measurement of the hole density in the ferromagnetic semiconductor
GaMnAs is notoriously difficult using standard transport
techniques due to the dominance of the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we report
the first spectroscopic measurement of the hole density in four
GaMnAs samples () at room temperature
using Raman scattering intensity analysis of the coupled plasmon-LO-phonon mode
and the unscreened LO phonon. The unscreened LO phonon frequency linearly
decreases as the Mn concentration increases up to 8.3%. The hole density
determined from the Raman scattering shows a monotonic increase with increasing
for , exhibiting a direct correlation to the observed .
The optical technique reported here provides an unambiguous means of
determining the hole density in this important new class of ``spintronic''
semiconductor materials.Comment: two-column format 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Physical Review
The TANAMI Program
TANAMI (Tracking Active Galactic Nuclei with Austral Milliarcsecond
Interferometry) is a monitoring program to study the parsec-scale structures
and dynamics of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) of the
Southern Hemisphere with the Long Baseline Array and associated telescopes.
Extragalactic jets south of -30 degrees declination are observed at 8.4 GHz and
22 GHz every two months at milliarcsecond resolution. The initial TANAMI sample
is a hybrid radio and gamma-ray selected sample since the combination of VLBI
and gamma-ray observations is crucial to understand the broadband emission
characteristics of AGN.Comment: Confernce Proceedings for "X-ray Astronomy 2009" (Bologna), 3 pages,

Variation in the Extraction Efficiency of Estradiol and Progesterone in Moist and Lyophilized Feces of the Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta pigra): Alternative Methods
Several fecal steroid extraction techniques have been developed to measure the ovary function in different species of mammals. However, regardless of the method of extraction and the sample type chosen, it has been observed that they can yield results with different percentages of recuperation. The objective of this study was to determine whether the type of substratum, solvent and extraction method used have any influence on the extraction efficiency in the feces of Alouatta pigra (black howler monkey). For this purpose we used two methods: agitation and ebullition. With each method, we utilized moist and lyophilized feces. The validation of radioimmunoassay method was accurate and precise for quantify estradiol and progesterone in lyophilized feces of A. pigra. To both of which ethanol and methanol, absolute and at 80%, were added, besides the hormones 125I-Estradiol and 125I-Progesterone. The extraction efficiency for 125I-Estradiol was from 87.72 ± 3.97 to 41.24 ± 2.67%, and for 125I-Progesterone from 71.15 ± 4.24 to 42.30 ± 1.19% when we used the agitation method. Whereas with the ebullition method, the extraction efficiency for 125I-Estradiol ranged from 86.89 ± 2.66 to 71.68 ± 3.02% and for 125I-Progesterone from 98.31 ± 1.26 to 85.40 ± 1.98%. Due to the differences found in these assays, which depend on the method used, the type of feces employed and the type of solvent added to them, we recommend the ebullition method and the lyophilized feces of A. pigra for extracting the hormones, since in moist feces there may exist variables which might interfere in the quantification of 125I-Estradiol and 125I-Progesterone
