The footprint of cometary dust analogues: II. Morphology as a tracer of tensile strength and application to dust collection by the Rosetta spacecraft
The structure of cometary dust is a tracer of growth processes in the
formation of planetesimals. Instrumentation on board the Rosetta mission to
comet 67P/Churyumov- Gerasimenko captured dust particles and analysed them in
situ. However, these deposits are a product of a collision within the
instrument. We conducted laboratory experiments with cometary dust analogues,
simulating the collection process by Rosetta instruments (specifically COSIMA,
MIDAS). In Paper I we reported that velocity is a key driver in determining the
appearance of deposits. Here in Paper II we use materials with different
monomer sizes, and study the effect of tensile strength on the appearance of
deposits. We find that mass transfer efficiency increases from 1 up to
10% with increasing monomer diameter from 0.3 m to 1.5 m (i.e.
tensile strength decreasing from 12 to 3 kPa), and velocities
increasing from 0.5 to 6 m/s. Also, the relative abundance of small fragments
after impact is higher for material with higher tensile strength. The
degeneracy between the effects of velocity and material strength may be lifted
by performing a closer study of the deposits. This experimental method makes it
possible to estimate the mass transfer efficiency in the COSIMA instrument.
Extrapolating these results implies that more than half of the dust collected
during the Rosetta mission has not been imaged. We analysed two COSIMA targets
containing deposits from single collisions. The collision that occurred closest

The footprint of cometary dust analogs: I. Laboratory experiments of low-velocity impacts and comparison with Rosetta data
Cometary dust provides a unique window on dust growth mechanisms during the
onset of planet formation. Measurements by the Rosetta spacecraft show that the
dust in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has a granular structure at
size scales from sub-um up to several hundreds of um, indicating hierarchical
growth took place across these size scales. However, these dust particles may
have been modified during their collection by the spacecraft instruments. Here
we present the results of laboratory experiments that simulate the impact of
dust on the collection surfaces of COSIMA and MIDAS, instruments onboard the
Rosetta spacecraft. We map the size and structure of the footprints left by the
dust particles as a function of their initial size (up to several hundred um)
and velocity (up to 6 m/s). We find that in most collisions, only part of the
dust particle is left on the target; velocity is the main driver of the
appearance of these deposits. A boundary between sticking/bouncing and
fragmentation as an outcome of the particle-target collision is found at v ~ 2
m/s. For velocities below this value, particles either stick and leave a single
deposit on the target plate, or bounce, leaving a shallow footprint of
monomers. At velocities > 2 m/s and sizes > 80 um, particles fragment upon
collision, transferring up to 50 per cent of their mass in a rubble-pile-like
deposit on the target plate. The amount of mass transferred increases with the
impact velocity. The morphologies of the deposits are qualitatively similar to

Models of electrolyte solutions from molecular descriptions: The example of NaCl solutions
We present a method to derive implicit solvent models of electrolyte
solutions from all-atom descriptions; providing analytical expressions of the
thermodynamic and structural properties of the ions consistent with the
underlying explicit solvent representation. Effective potentials between ions
in solution are calculated to perform perturbation theory calculations, in
order to derive the best possible description in terms of charged hard spheres.
Applying this method to NaCl solutions yields excellent agreement with the
all-atom model, provided ion association is taken into account.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Observation of aerodynamic instability in the flow of a particle stream in a dilute gas
Forming macroscopic solid bodies in circumstellar discs requires local dust
concentration levels significantly higher than the mean. Interactions of the
dust particles with the gas must serve to augment local particle densities, and
facilitate growth past barriers in the metre size range. Amongst a number of
mechanisms that can amplify the local density of solids, aerodynamic streaming
instability (SI) is one of the most promising. This work tests the physical
assumptions of models that lead to SI in protoplanetary disks (PPDs). We
conduct laboratory experiments in which we track the three-dimensional motion
of spherical solid particles fluidized in a low-pressure, laminar,
incompressible, gas stream. The particle sizes span the Stokes-Epstein drag
regime transition and the overall dust-to-gas mass density ratio is close to
unity. Lambrechts et al. (2016) established the similarity of the laboratory
flow to a simplified PPD model flow. We obtain experimental results suggesting
an instability due to particle-gas interaction: i) there exist variations in
particle concentration in the direction of the mean drag forces; ii) the
particles have a tendency to 'catch up' to one another when they are in
proximity; iii) particle clumping occurs on very small scales, which implies
local enhancements above the background dust-to-gas mass density ratio by
factors of several tens; v) the presence of these density enhancements occurs
for a mean dust-to-gas mass density ratio approaching or greater than 1; v) we
find evidence for collective particle drag reduction when the local particle
number density becomes high and when the background gas pressure is high so
that the drag is in the continuum regime. The experiments presented here are
precedent-setting for observing SI under controlled conditions and may lead to

Warm Absorbers and Outflows in the Seyfert-1 Galaxy NGC 4051
We present both phenomenological and more physical photoionization models of
the Chandra HETG spectra of the Seyfert-1 AGN NGC 4051. We detect 40 absorption
and emission lines, encompassing highly ionized charge states from O, Ne, Mg,
Si, S and the Fe L-shell and K-shell. Two independent photoionization packages,
XSTAR and Cloudy, were both used to self-consistently model the continuum and
line spectra. These fits detected three absorbing regions in this system with
densities ranging from 10^{10} to 10^{11} cm^{-3}. In particular, our XSTAR
models require three components that have ionization parameters of log \xi =
4.5, 3.3, & 1.0, and are located within the BLR at 70, 300, and 13,000 R_g,
respectively, assuming a constant wind density. Larger radii are inferred for
density profiles which decline with radius. The Cloudy models give a similar
set of parameters with ionization parameters of log \xi = 5.0, 3.6, & 2.2
located at 40, 200, and 3,300 R_g. We demonstrate that these regions are
out-flowing from the system, and carry a small fraction of material out of the
system relative to the implied mass accretion rate. The data suggest that

Measuring deliberate reflection in residents: validation and psychometric properties of a measurement tool
PURPOSE: Reflective capacity is the ability to understand critical analysis of knowledge and experience to achieve deeper meaning. In medicine, there is little provision for post-graduate medical education to teach deliberate reflection. The feasibility, scoring characteristics, reliability, validation, and adaptability of a modified previously validated instrument was examined for its usefulness assessing reflective capacity in residents as a step toward developing interventions for improvement.
METHODS: Third-year residents and fellows from four anesthesia training programs were administered a slightly modified version of the Reflection Evaluation for Learners\u27 Enhanced Competencies Tool (REFLECT) in a prospective, observational study at the end of the 2019 academic year. Six written vignettes of imperfect anesthesia situations were created. Subjects recorded their perspectives on two randomly assigned vignettes. Responses were scored using a 5-element rubric; average scores were analyzed for psychometric properties. An independent self-report assessment method, the Cognitive Behavior Survey: Residency Level (rCBS) was used to examine construct validity. Internal consistency (ICR, Cronbach\u27s alpha) and interrater reliability (weighted kappa) were examined. Pearson correlations were used between the two measures of reflective capacity.
RESULTS: 46/136 invited subjects completed 2/6 randomly assigned vignettes. Interrater agreement was high (k = 0.85). The overall average REFLECT score was 1.8 (1-4 scale) with good distribution across the range of scores. ICR for both the REFLECT score (mean 1.8, sd 0.5; α = 0.92) and the reflection scale of the rCBS (mean 4.5, sd 1.1; α = 0.94) were excellent. There was a significant correlation between REFLECT score and the rCBS reflection scale (r = .44, p \u3c 0.01).
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates feasibility, reliability, and sufficiently robust psychometric properties of a modified REFLECT rubric to assess graduate medical trainees\u27 reflective capacity and established construct/convergent validity to an independent measure. The instrument has the potential to assess the effectiveness of interventions intended to improve reflective capacity
Haptoglobin Phenotype, Preeclampsia Risk and the Efficacy of Vitamin C and E Supplementation to Prevent Preeclampsia in a Racially Diverse Population
Haptoglobin's (Hp) antioxidant and pro-angiogenic properties differ between the 1-1, 2-1, and 2-2 phenotypes. Hp phenotype affects cardiovascular disease risk and treatment response to antioxidant vitamins in some non-pregnant populations. We previously demonstrated that preeclampsia risk was doubled in white Hp 2-1 women, compared to Hp 1-1 women. Our objectives were to determine whether we could reproduce this finding in a larger cohort, and to determine whether Hp phenotype influences lack of efficacy of antioxidant vitamins in preventing preeclampsia and serious complications of pregnancy-associated hypertension (PAH). This is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial in which 10,154 low-risk women received daily vitamin C and E, or placebo, from 9-16 weeks gestation until delivery. Hp phenotype was determined in the study prediction cohort (n = 2,393) and a case-control cohort (703 cases, 1,406 controls). The primary outcome was severe PAH, or mild or severe PAH with elevated liver enzymes, elevated serum creatinine, thrombocytopenia, eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, medically indicated preterm birth or perinatal death. Preeclampsia was a secondary outcome. Odds ratios were estimated by logistic regression. Sampling weights were used to reduce bias from an overrepresentation of women with preeclampsia or the primary outcome. There was no relationship between Hp phenotype and the primary outcome or preeclampsia in Hispanic, white/other or black women. Vitamin supplementation did not reduce the risk of the primary outcome or preeclampsia in women of any phenotype. Supplementation increased preeclampsia risk (odds ratio 3.30; 95% confidence interval 1.61-6.82, p<0.01) in Hispanic Hp 2-2 women. Hp phenotype does not influence preeclampsia risk, or identify a subset of women who may benefit from vitamin C and E supplementation to prevent preeclampsia
Test of variables of attention (TOVA) as a predictor of early attention complaints, an antecedent to dementia
The goal of this study was to determine if impairments detected by the test of variables of attention (TOVA) may be used to predict early attention complaints and memory impairments accurately in a clinical setting. We performed a statistical analysis of outcomes in a patient population screened for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or attention complaints, processing errors as measured by TOVA and the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS-III) results. Attention deficit disorder (ADD) checklists, constructed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th Edition criteria, which were completed by patients at PATH Medical, revealed that 72.8% of the patients had more than one attention complaint out of a total of 16 complaints, and 41.5% had more than five complaints. For the 128 males with a significant number of ADD complaints, individuals whose scores were significantly deviant or borderline (SDB) on TOVA, had a significantly greater number of attention complaints compared with normals for omissions (P < 0.02), response time (P < 0.015), and variability (P < 0.005), but not commissions (P > 0.50). For males, the mean scores for auditory, visual, immediate, and working memory scores as measured by the WMS-III were significantly greater for normals versus SDBs on the TOVA subtest, ie, omission (P < 0.01) and response time (P < 0.05), but not variability or commissions. The means for auditory, visual, and immediate memory scores were significantly greater for normals versus SDBs for variability (P < 0.045) only. In females, the mean scores for visual and working memory scores were significantly greater for normals versus SDBs for omissions (P < 0.025). The number of SDB TOVA quarters was a significant predictor for “impaired” or “normal” group membership for visual memory (P < 0.015), but not for the other three WMS-III components. For males, the partial correlation between the number of attention complaints and the number of SDB TOVA quarters was also significant (r = 0.251, P < 0.005). For the 152 females with a significant number of attention complaints, no significant differences between SDBs and normals were observed (P > 0.15). This is the first report, to our knowledge, which provides evidence that TOVA is an accurate predictor of early attention complaints and memory impairments in a clinical setting. This finding is more robust for males than for females between the ages of 40 and 90 years
Preliminary investigation of plasma levels of sex hormones and human growth factor(s), and P300 latency as correlates to cognitive decline as a function of gender
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Aging is marked by declines in levels of many sex hormones and growth factors, as well as in cognitive function. The P300 event-related potential has been established as a predictor of cognitive decline. We decided to determine if this measure, as well as 2 standard tests of memory and attention, may be correlated with serum levels of sex hormones and growth factors, and if there are any generalizations that could be made based on these parameters and the aging process.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>In this large clinically based preliminary study several sex-stratified associations between hormone levels and cognition were observed, including (1) for males aged 30 to 49, both IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 significantly associated negatively with prolonged P300 latency; (2) for males aged 30 to 49, the spearman correlation between prolonged P300 latency and low free testosterone was significant; (3) for males aged 60 to 69, there was a significant negative correlation between P300 latency and DHEA levels; (4) for females aged 50 to 59 IGFBP-3 significantly associated negatively with prolonged P300 latency; (5) for females at all age periods, estrogen and progesterone were uncorrelated with P300 latency; and (6) for females aged 40 to 69, there was significant negative correlation between DHEA levels and P300 latency. Moreover there were no statistically significant correlations between any hormone and Wechsler Memory Scale-III (WMS-111). However, in females, there was a significant positive correlation between estrogen levels and the number of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) complaints.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Given certain caveats including confounding factors involving psychiatric and other chronic diseases as well as medications, the results may still have important value. If these results could be confirmed in a more rigorously controlled investigation, it may have important value in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cognitive impairments and decline.</p
