Quantifying Bar Strength: Morphology Meets Methodology
A set of objective bar-classification methods have been applied to the Ohio
State Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey (Eskridge et al. 2002). Bivariate comparisons
between methods show that all methods agree in a statistical sense. Thus the
distribution of bar strengths in a sample of galaxies can be robustly
determined. There are very substantial outliers in all bivariate comparisons.
Examination of the outliers reveals that the scatter in the bivariate
comparisons correlates with galaxy morphology. Thus multiple measures of bar
strength provide a means of studying the range of physical properties of galaxy

Human-centered Explainable AI: Towards a Reflective Sociotechnical Approach
Explanations--a form of post-hoc interpretability--play an instrumental role
in making systems accessible as AI continues to proliferate complex and
sensitive sociotechnical systems. In this paper, we introduce Human-centered
Explainable AI (HCXAI) as an approach that puts the human at the center of
technology design. It develops a holistic understanding of "who" the human is
by considering the interplay of values, interpersonal dynamics, and the
socially situated nature of AI systems. In particular, we advocate for a
reflective sociotechnical approach. We illustrate HCXAI through a case study of
an explanation system for non-technical end-users that shows how technical
advancements and the understanding of human factors co-evolve. Building on the
case study, we lay out open research questions pertaining to further refining
our understanding of "who" the human is and extending beyond 1-to-1
human-computer interactions. Finally, we propose that a reflective HCXAI
paradigm-mediated through the perspective of Critical Technical Practice and
supplemented with strategies from HCI, such as value-sensitive design and
participatory design--not only helps us understand our intellectual blind

The feasibility and utility of grocery receipt analyses for dietary assessment
OBJECTIVE: To establish the feasibility and utility of a simple data collection methodology for dietary assessment. DESIGN: Using a cross-sectional design, trained data collectors approached adults (~20 – 40 years of age) at local grocery stores and asked whether they would volunteer their grocery receipts and answer a few questions for a small stipend ($1). METHODS: The grocery data were divided into 3 categories: "fats, oils, and sweets," "processed foods," and "low-fat/low-calorie substitutions" as a percentage of the total food purchase price. The questions assessed the shopper's general eating habits (eg, fast-food consumption) and a few demographic characteristics and health aspects (eg, perception of body size). Statistical Analyses Performed. Descriptive and analytic analyses using non-parametric tests were conducted in SAS. RESULTS: Forty-eight receipts and questionnaires were collected. Nearly every respondent reported eating fast food at least once per month; 27% ate out once or twice a day. Frequency of fast-food consumption was positively related to perceived body size of the respondent (p = 0.02). Overall, 30% of the food purchase price was for fats, oils, sweets, 10% was for processed foods, and almost 6% was for low-fat/low-calorie substitutions. Households where no one was perceived to be overweight spent a smaller proportion of their food budget on fats, oils, and sweets than did households where at least one person was perceived to be overweight (p = 0.10); household where the spouse was not perceived to be overweight spent less on fats, oils, and sweets (p = 0.02) and more on low-fat/low-calorie substitutions (p = 0.09) than did households where the spouse was perceived to be overweight; and, respondents who perceived themselves to be overweight spent more on processed foods than did respondents who did not perceive themselves to be overweight (p = 0.06). CONCLUSION: This simple dietary assessment method, although global in nature, may be a useful indicator of dietary practices as evidenced by its association with perceived weight status
Euthanasia and other end-of-life decisions: a mortality follow-back study in Belgium
BACKGROUND: This study compares prevalence and types of medical end-of-life decisions between the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking communities of Belgium. This is the first nationwide study that can make these comparisons and the first measurement after implementation of the euthanasia law (2002). METHODS: We performed a mortality follow-back study in 2005-2006. Data were collected via the nationwide Sentinel Network of General Practitioners, an epidemiological surveillance system representative of all Belgian GPs.Weekly, all GPs reported the medical end-of-life decisions among all non-sudden deaths of patients in their practice. We compared the northern Dutch-speaking (60%) and southern French-speaking communities (40%) controlling for population differences. RESULTS: We analysed 1690 non-sudden deaths. An end-of-life decision with possible life-shortening effect was made in 50% of patients in the Dutch-speaking community and 41% of patients in the French-speaking community (OR 1.4; 95%CI, 1.2 to 1.8). Continuous deep sedation until death occurred in 8% and 15% respectively (OR 0.5; 95%CI, 0.4 to 0.7). Community differences regarding the prevalence of euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide were not significant.Community differences were more present among home/care home than among hospital deaths: non-treatment decisions with explicit life-shortening intention were made more often in the Dutch-speaking than in the French-speaking community settings (OR 2.2; 95%CI, 1.2 to 3.9); while continuous deep sedation occurred less often in the Dutch-speaking community settings (OR 0.5; 95%CI, 0.3 to 0.9). CONCLUSION: Even though legal and general healthcare systems are the same for the whole country, there are considerable variations between the communities in type and prevalence of certain end-of-life decisions, even after controlling for population difference
The role of synovial fluid markers of catabolism and anabolism in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and asymptomatic organ donors
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to correlate the level of anabolic and catabolic biomarkers in synovial fluid (SF) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and asymptomatic organ donors.Methods: SF was collected from the knees of 45 OA, 22 RA patients and 20 asymptomatic organ donors. Eight biomarkers were selected and analyzed by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay: interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-11; leukemia-inhibitory factor (LIF); cartilage oligomeric protein (COMP); osteocalcin; and osteogenic protein 1 (OP-1). Data are expressed as medians (interquartile ranges). The effects of sex and disease activity were assessed on the basis of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities index score for patients with OA and on the basis of white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein level for patients with RA.Results: The mean ages (± SD) of the patients were as follows: 53 ± 9 years for patients with OA, 54 ± 11 years for patients with RA and 52 ± 7 years for asymptomatic organ donors. No effect of participants' sex was identified. In the SF of patients with RA, four of five cytokines were higher than those in the SF of patients with OA and those of asymptomatic organ donors. The most significant differences were found for IL-6 and IL-8, where IL-6 concentration in SF of patients with RA was almost threefold higher than that in patients with OA and fourfold higher than that in asymptomatic donor controls: 354.7 pg/ml (1,851.6) vs. 119.4 pg/ml (193.2) vs. 86.97 pg/ml (82.0) (P < 0.05 and P < 0.05, respectively). IL-8 concentrations were higher in SF of patients with RA than that in patients with OA as well as that in asymptomatic donor controls: 583.6 pg/ml (1,086.4) vs. 429 pg/ml (87.3) vs. 451 pg/ml (170.1) (P < 0.05 and P < 0.05, respectively). No differences were found for IL-11 in the SF of patients with RA and that of patients with OA, while a 1.4-fold difference was detected in the SF of patients with OA and that of asymptomatic donor controls: 296.2 pg/ml (257.2) vs. 211.6 pg/ml (40.8) (P < 0.05). IL-1 concentrations were the highest in the SF of RA patients (9.26 pg/ml (11.1)); in the SF of asymptomatic donors, it was significantly higher than that in patients with OA (9.083 pg/ml (1.6) vs. 7.76 pg/ml (2.6); P < 0.05). Conversely, asymptomatic donor control samples had the highest LIF concentrations: 228.5 pg/ml (131.6) vs. 128.4 pg/ml (222.7) in the SF of patients with RA vs. 107.5 pg/ml (136.9) in the SF of patients with OA (P < 0.05). OP-1 concentrations were twofold higher in the SF of patients with RA than those in patients with OA and threefold higher than those in asymptomatic donor control samples (167.1 ng/ml (194.8) vs. 81.79 ng/ml (116.0) vs. 54.49 ng/ml (29.3), respectively; P < 0.05). The differences in COMP and osteocalcin were indistinguishable between the groups, as were the differences between active and inactive OA and RA.Conclusions: Activation of selected biomarkers corresponds to the mechanisms that drive each disease. IL-11, LIF and OP-1 may be viewed as a cluster of biomarkers significant for OA; while profiling of IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, LIF and OP-1 may be more significant in RA. Larger, better-defined patient cohorts are necessary to develop a biomarker algorithm for prognostic use. © 2011 Kokebie et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
Linkage Specific Fucosylation of Alpha-1-Antitrypsin in Liver Cirrhosis and Cancer Patients: Implications for a Biomarker of Hepatocellular Carcinoma
We previously reported increased levels of protein-linked fucosylation with the development of liver cancer and identified many of the proteins containing the altered glycan structures. One such protein is alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT). To advance these studies, we performed N-linked glycan analysis on the five major isoforms of A1AT and completed a comprehensive study of the glycosylation of A1AT found in healthy controls, patients with hepatitis C- (HCV) induced liver cirrhosis, and in patients infected with HCV with a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Patients with liver cirrhosis and liver cancer had increased levels of triantennary glycan-containing outer arm (alpha-1,3) fucosylation. Increases in core (alpha-1,6) fucosylation were observed only on A1AT from patients with cancer. We performed a lectin fluorophore-linked immunosorbent assay using Aleuria Aurantia lectin (AAL), specific for core and outer arm fucosylation in over 400 patients with liver disease. AAL-reactive A1AT was able to detect HCC with a sensitivity of 70% and a specificity of 86%, which was greater than that observed with the current marker of HCC, alpha-fetoprotein. Glycosylation analysis of the false positives was performed; results indicated that these patients had increases in outer arm fucosylation but not in core fucosylation, suggesting that core fucosylation is cancer specific.This report details the stepwise change in the glycosylation of A1AT with the progression from liver cirrhosis to cancer and identifies core fucosylation on A1AT as an HCC specific modification
Psychosocial correlates of dietary fat intake in African-American adults: a cross-sectional study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Current dietary guidelines recommend that dietary fat should comprise 20–35% percent of total energy intake, with less than 10% of energy from saturated fat. However, many Americans exceed these goals and data suggest that African Americans tend to consume a higher percentage of energy from dietary fat than Whites. Because diets low in dietary fat, particularly saturated fat, are associated with lower risk for many chronic illnesses, it is important to identify strategies to reduce high fat intakes. This study examined associations of psychosocial factors with dietary fat intake in African American adults 18 to 70 years.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data are self-reported from a cross-sectional survey of African Americans (n = 658) using an 11-page questionnaire, collected from June to October 2003. Associations of psychosocial (predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling) factors based on the PRECEDE framework, dietary fat-related behaviors, and participant characteristics (e.g., age, sex, education, BMI) with total and saturated fat consumption are described using linear regression and analysis of variance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean age of participants was 43.9 years, 57% were female, 37% were college graduates, and 76% were overweight/obese. Respondents with lower fat intakes were female, older, had high education and very good/excellent perceived health. Among the psychosocial factors, the strongest (inverse) associations with fat intake were with two predisposing factors: <it>belief in the importance of a low-fat diet </it>(both genders) and <it>high self-efficacy </it>(women only). Fat intake was also significantly lower among participants who could <it>count on those close for encouragement to eat healthy foods </it>(a reinforcing factor) and among men who <it>needed more information about preparing healthy foods </it>(an enabling factor).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Dietary interventions to decrease fat intake in African American adults may benefit from incorporating predisposing factors, such as personal beliefs and self-efficacy, in their design and implementation.</p

Evaluation of the impact of a school gardening intervention on children's fruit and vegetable intake: a randomised controlled trial.
Background: Current academic literature suggests that school gardening programmes can provide an interactive environment with the potential to change children’s fruit and vegetable intake. This is the first cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT) designed to evaluate whether a school gardening programme can have an effect on children’s fruit and vegetable intake.
Methods: The trial included children from 23 schools; these schools were randomised into two groups, one to receive the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)-led intervention and the other to receive the less involved Teacher-led intervention. A 24-hour food diary (CADET) was used to collect baseline and follow-up dietary intake 18 months apart. Questionnaires were also administered to evaluate the intervention implementation.
Results: A total of 641 children completed the trial with a mean age of 8.1 years (95% CI: 8.0, 8.4). The unadjusted results from multilevel regression analysis revealed that for combined daily fruit and vegetable intake the Teacher-led group had a higher daily mean change of 8 g (95% CI: −19, 36) compared to the RHS-led group -32 g (95% CI: −60, −3). However, after adjusting for possible confounders this difference was not significant (intervention effect: −40 g, 95% CI: −88, 1; p = 0.06). The adjusted analysis of process measures identified that if schools improved their gardening score by 3 levels (a measure of school gardening involvement - the scale has 6 levels from 0 ‘no garden’ to 5 ‘community involvement’), irrespective of group allocation, children had, on average, a daily increase of 81 g of fruit and vegetable intake (95% CI: 0, 163; p = 0.05) compared to schools that had no change in gardening score.
Conclusions: This study is the first cluster randomised controlled trial designed to evaluate a school gardening intervention. The results have found very little evidence to support the claims that school gardening alone can improve children’s daily fruit and vegetable intake. However, when a gardening intervention is implemented at a high level within the school it may improve children’s daily fruit and vegetable intake by a portion. Improving children’s fruit and vegetable intake remains a challenging task
Nitrogen forms affect root structure and water uptake in the hybrid poplar
The study analyses the effects of two different forms of nitrogen fertilisation (nitrate and ammonium) on root structure and water uptake of two hybrid poplar (Populus maximowiczii x P. balsamifera) clones in a field experiment. Water uptake was studied using sap flow gauges on individual proximal roots and coarse root structure was examined by excavating 18 whole-root systems. Finer roots were scanned and analyzed for architecture. Nitrogen forms did not affect coarse-root system development, but had a significant effect on fine-root development. Nitrate-treated trees presented higher fine:coarse root ratios and higher specific root lengths than control or ammonium treated trees. These allocation differences affected the water uptake capacity of the plants as reflected by the higher sapflow rate in the nitrate treatment. The diameter of proximal roots at the tree base predicted well the total root biomass and length. The diameter of smaller lateral roots also predicted the lateral root mass, length, surface area and the number of tips. The effect of nitrogen fertilisation on the fine root structure translated into an effect on the functioning of the fine roots forming a link between form (architecture) and function (water uptake)
