    Identification and characterization of a mutant that shows genomic instability

    Motivation: The fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, is an important model organism for the study of eukariotic molecular and celular biology, including processes like cell cycle control that attracts an especial interest due to their relation with cancer and tumorigenesis [1]. Previous work of our group showed that RNA metabolism is the primary target of formamide in vivo, probably by weakening RNA secondary structure and its interaction with other proteins. In this study 35 Formamide Sensitive Mutant strains (fsm) have been isolated [2]. In the present work, we aim to identify and characterize one of these mutants (fsm43), which presents an interesting phenotype since it shows defects in chromosome segregation and aberrant cell division. These phenotypes are usually involved in tumoral processes so its study and characterization may identify new oncogenic mutations and reveal new treatment targets. Methods: Provided that this mutation has been proved very difficult to complement by genomic libraries, As a first step in this project, a genetic mapping of the formamide sensitive mutation in fsm43 will be carried out to determine its position in the genome. The methodology to follow is described in Anders et al.[3] and it is based on the amplification of linkage distance using two gene deletions, rec12 and swi5. Together, the two methods allow an approximate determination of map position in only a small number of crosses. First we used rec12 deletion that produce a recombition-deficient that allow choose an individual chromosome, and then swi5 mutants that have a reduced frequency of both intragenic and intergenic recombination. Then we use a classical method of linkage proving different genes that are in the region that we determinate previously. In parallel we have initiated cellular characterization of the mutant phenotype under permisive and restrictive conditions.Results: So far, by long range analysis we have been able to map the mutation on chromosome III. Swi5 deletion background show that the gene is on the right arm of the chromosome between markers tea1 and ima1. Current analysis by classical linkcage on the region, will determine the precise location of fms43 mutation. Conclusions: Fsm43 is a recessive mutation that leads to severe genomic instability. This mutant can not be complemented by genomic libraries but is amenable for linkage analysis. The mutation lies on right chromosme III arm within tea1 and ima1 markers (45 Kb)

    Power line infrastructure is available almost everywhere. Positioning systems aim to estimate where a device or target is. Consequently, there may be an opportunity to use power lines for positioning purposes. This survey article reports the different efforts, working principles, and possibilities for implementing positioning systems relying on power line infrastructure for power line positioning systems (PLPS). Since Power Line Communication (PLC) systems of different characteristics have been deployed to provide communication services using the existing mains, we also address how PLC systems may be employed to build positioning systems. Although some efforts exist, PLPS are still prospective and thus open to research and development, and we try to indicate the possible directions and potential applications for PLPS.European Commissio

    Cubiertas de madera de las iglesias fernandinas de Córdoba

    After Cordoba´s reconquest by king Saint Ferdinand in 1236, Cordoba town was urbanized into fourteen districts, or parishes. Social, administrative and religious center of these districts was situated in fourteen churchs. These buildings are named ferdinand churchs’, because they were constructed by king Saint Ferdinand. A similar architectural pattern was followed in construction of these churchs. This pattern is characterized by reiteration of fixed arquitectural elements, like roof structure made of timber, in central and lateral church-bodies. Roof timber structure used in lateral church-bodies was tilted frame, while triangular truss with butress and anchor was used in central church-body. Some of these churchs have been destroyed or greatly transformed. However, in survivor ferdinand churchs’ is posible to study the roof timber structure, a singular cover system that was originated by union of medieval constructive and mussulman ornamental technics. The aim of this article is to describe the roof timber structure of cordovan ferdinand churchs’ as well as to research into their origin.Tras la reconquista de Córdoba por San Fernando, en 1236, la ciudad se reorganizó en base a catorce barrios o parroquias, cuyo centro social, administrativo y religioso correspondía a sendas iglesias. Por esta razón estos templos se conocen con el nombre de iglesias fernandinas. Todas ellas se construyeron siguiendo un mismo patrón arquitectónico, en el que se repiten con pocas diferencias una serie de elementos constructivos, entre los que destacan el sistema de cubiertas con madera de las naves central y laterales. Así, mientras que para las laterales se utilizaron forjados inclinados o colgadizos, la central se cubrió con una armadura de par y nudillo, formada por la unión de cerchas paralelas unidas por estribos y tirantes. A pesar de que algunas de estas iglesias han desaparecido y otras han sufrido grandes transformaciones, en las que aún persisten estas techumbres es posible estudiar este sistema de cubiertas, resultado de la unión de técnicas constructivas medievales cristianas y decorativas musulmanas. Este trabajo pretende describir esta tipología de cubierta, así como intentar arrojar algo de luz sobre su origen y realizar una breve caracterización de las techumbres de madera de aquéllas de estas iglesias que aún perviven

    Efectos de un sistema integrado de recolección para pequeños productores en la calidad de la aceituna recogida

    Small producers confront specific challenges when they opt to produce high-quality olive fruit. Limited resources for investing in harvest machinery and manpower are the main reasons for continuing a traditional harvest method that puts the final product and its economic value at risk. This paper discusses the efficiency of an integrated harvest system as a possible solution to these specific challenges. The system is formed by a newly designed manual harvesting device and the use of a cooling room near the olive grove. Both systems were evaluated to assess their feasibility for optimum conditions before processing. The combined effect of the harvesting method and cold storage on the fruit characteristics (incidence of decay, skin color, weight loss, firmness, respiration, and ethylene production) was evaluated on three different varieties (‘Arbequina’, ‘Picual’ and ‘Verdial’) and four different storage times (0, 4, 8, and 14 days). The results indicate that the proposed harvesting method in combination with an appropriate cooling system offers an affordable alternative for obtaining fruit with the best physiological characteristics.Los pequeños productores se enfrentan a retos específicos, cuando optan por producir aceitunas de alta calidad. La imposibilidad económica de invertir, tanto en maquinaria de cosecha, como en mano de obra es la razón principal que obliga a continuar una recolección tradicional que pone en riesgo el producto final y su valor económico. Este estudio analiza la eficiencia de un sistema de recolección integrado como una posible solución a estos desafíos específicos. El sistema está formado por un dispositivo de recogida manual de nuevo diseño y el uso de una cámara de frío en la finca. El efecto combinado del método de recolección presentado y el almacenamiento en frío sobre las características de la fruta (incidencia de podredumbre, color de piel, pérdida de peso, firmeza, respiración y producción de etileno) se evaluó en tres variedades diferentes (‘Arbequina’, ‘Picual’ y ‘Verdial’) y diferentes tiempos de almacenamiento (0, 4, 8, 14 días). Los resultados indican que la combinación de un método de recolección mecánica y un sistema de enfriamiento adecuado ofrece una alternativa económicamente asequible para obtener frutos con las mejores características fisiológicas

    Closed-Form and Explicit Analytical Model for Crosstalk in CMOS Photodiodes

    A closed-form and explicit 2-D analytical model for crosstalk(CTK) effects in p-n + CMOS photodiodes for pixel design optimization has been developed in this paper. This model complements and extends a previous development describing the photocurrent because of the active area illumination along with the lateral depletion region and lateral components owing to the diffused photocarriers from the surroundings of the junction. The model has very few fitting parameters because it is physically based. Similarly, it can be of great use for CMOS image sensors designers, especially to fulfill high resolution and small area requirements by pixel size reduction.     Analysis performance of wavelet OFDM in mobility platforms

    Wavelet orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the medium access techniques recommended by the IEEE 1901 working group for broadband communications over electrical networks, and is under consideration for IoT applications. This standard provides a flexible architecture supporting integrated access, smart grid, building, in-home, and mobility platform (vehicle) applications. Wavelet OFDM is a filter bank multicarrier system based on the extended lapped transform, in which the transmitting and receiving filters are obtained from a waveform provided by the standard. In this paper, we explore system performance when other waveforms are employed, studying the trade-off between stopband attenuation and transition band width. Furthermore, an alternative and more efficient way of obtaining the theoretical expressions of the achievable data rate is shown, assuming realistic power line communication noise other than additive white Gaussian noise. To demonstrate the capabilities of wavelet OFDM, the results of simulation of the symbol error rate and the data rate in several systems in platform scenarios (in-vehicle and in-aircraft) are shown.Comunidad de MadridUniversidad de Alcal
