The study of isolated intellectual careers is very often victim of an error that Pierre Bourdieu has called "biographical illusion". The analytic strategy based on comparison of individual itineraries involved in similar contexts allows eventually an apprehension more attentive to the social factors that constraints them. In this sense, this article looks at the trajectory of four characters –Florestan Fernandes, Gino Germani, Antonio Candido and Adolfo Prieto - who were the main protagonists of the modernization of sociology and literary criticism in Brazil and Argentina between the decades of the 1950 and 1960.Fil: Blanco, Alejandro Raul. Hazard Analysis for the Mark III Space Suit Assembly (SSA) Used in One-g Operations

    Get PDF
This Hazard Analysis document encompasses the Mark III Space Suit Assembly (SSA) and associated ancillary equipment. It has been prepared using JSC17773, "Preparing Hazard Analyses for JSC Ground Operation", as a guide. The purpose of this document is to present the potential hazards involved in ground (23 % maximum O2, One-g) operations of the Mark III and associated ancillary support equipment system. The hazards listed in this document are specific to suit operations only; each supporting facility (Bldg. 9, etc.) is responsible for test specific Hazard Analyses. A "hazard" is defined as any condition that has the potential for harming personnel or equipment. This analysis was performed to document the safety aspects associated with manned use of the Mark III for pressurized and unpressurized ambient, ground-based, One-g human testing. The hazards identified herein represent generic hazards inherent to all standard JSC test venues for nominal ground test configurations. Non-standard test venues or test specific configurations may warrant consideration of additional hazards analysis prior to test. The cognizant suit engineer is responsible for the safety of the astronaut/test subject, space suit, and suit support personnel. The test requester, for the test supported by the suit test engineer and suited subject, is responsible for overall safety and any necessary Test Readiness Reviews (TRR)

Effect of bathymetry irregularities on the energy dissipation of a mooring line

    Get PDF
With the aim of analysing the dynamic performance of a conventional chain catenary line and the impact that bathymetry irregularities may have on mooring dynamics, its fairlead is forced to oscillate under different accelerations in both regular and irregular displacements in surge direction. The experimental setup is specifically designed to realistically assess the energy dissipation through the mooring line. The importance of the interaction with the seabed is evident from the resulting video images and the tensions at both ends of the line. The differences between fairlead tensions of different seabed configurations increase under snap loading, peak tensions reaching values in some dynamic cases almost 0.5 times lower with a steep slope than with no slope. This supports the need to consider the bathymetry when designing a mooring system. Moreover, the period for which the dissipated energy abruptly increases due to snap loading is longer as the offset and amplitude enlarge, demonstrating the effect of mean drift on the all chain mooring line. How platform drift increases the dissipated energy through the mooring system depends largely on the local bathymetry, with this increase in some cases being 5.55 times greater with a steep slope than with no slope

Fuzzy Vault scheme based on fixed-length templates applied to dynamic signature verification

    Get PDF
As a consequence of the wide deployment of biometrics-based recognition systems, there are increasing concerns about the security of the sensitive information managed. Various techniques have been proposed in the literature for the biometric templates protection (BTP), having gained great popularity the crypto-biometric systems. In the present paper we propose the implementation of a Fuzzy Vault (FV) scheme based on fixed-length templates with application to dynamic signature verification (DSV), where only 15 global features of the signature are considered to form the templates. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated using three databases: a proprietary collection of signatures, and the publicly available databases MCYT and BioSecure. The experimental results show very similar verification performance compared to an equivalent unprotected system. This work was supported by the Spanish National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) through the Excellence of Advanced Cybersecurity Research Teams Program

Optimization of spray break-up CFD simulations by combining Sigma-Y Eulerian atomization model with a response surface methodology under diesel engine-like conditions (ECN Spray A)

[EN] This work evaluates the performance of the Sigma-Y Eulerian atomization model at reproducing the internal structure of a diesel spray with a special focus on Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) predictions. Modeling results have been compared to x-ray radiography measurements [21,24,38] which provided unique data within dense spray region. The first step corresponds to accurately reproduce the large scale spray dispersion. Among different RANS turbulence models, the standard k-s with the round jet corrected CIE value (1.60), has shown the best performance, as shown in [12]. Then, the study is devoted to the application and optimization of the predicted interphase surface density (E). In this work, a combination of CFD modeling and the statistical Design of Experiments (DOE) technique known as Response Surface Method (RSM) is applied in order to improve Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) predictions from E equation compared to experimental measurements. In the investigation, two different optimizations are conducted for the three modeling parameters involved in the equation, following a Central Composite Design (CCD), leading to 15 simulations for each one. After that, both optimum sets of values are validated to assure the accuracy of the method and it is decided the best choice. Finally, different injection and ambient conditions are simulated, with those selected values, providing a remarkable improvement in the modeling performance.Authors acknowledge that part of this work was possible thanks to the Programa de Ayudas de Investigacion y Desarrollo (PAID 2013 3198) of the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia.
