Randomized comparison of ultrasonic aspiration versus conventional electrocautery for dissection of the human internal thoracic artery
AbstractThe most common technique currently employed to harvest the internal thoracic artery for coronary artery bypass grafting is conventional electrocautery. This study compared an alternative method, electrocautery with an ultrasonic aspirator, for harvesting the internal thoracic artery. Patients were randomly assigned to one of six experimental groups (conventional electrocautery, ultrasonic aspirator at settings of 60%, 80%, and 100% power output, and ultrasonic aspirator in 100% CAVI-Pulse modes 1 and 3). Ring segments of internal thoracic artery were studied in an organ bath. Contraction responses were elicited with 123 mmol/L potassium physiologic salt solution, KPSS, KPSS solution containing noradrenaline, and a cumulative noradrenaline dose-contraction curve. Relaxation studies were performed with the vasodilators acetylcholine, bradykinin, and sodium nitroprusside. Forty percent of the electrocauterized vessels were traumatized or damaged and failed to respond to contractile stimuli, whereas only 10% of the vessels in ultrasonic aspirator groups 60%, 80%, and 100% failed to respond. All vessels in the group harvested by ultrasonic aspirator in 100% CAVI-Pulse mode 1 responded, whereas 20% of the vessels in the group harvested by ultrasonic aspirator in 100% CAVI-Pulse mode 3 failed to respond. All settings of electrocautery with an ultrasonic aspirator produced a greater contractile response to KPSS and noradrenaline. Acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside produced similar relaxations in all groups, but the bradykinin responses were significantly improved in all groups undergoing 100% electrocautery with an ultrasonic aspirator. These results suggest that 100% electrocautery with an ultrasonic aspirator, particularly in 100% CAVI-Pulse mode 1, resulted in less damage and trauma than conventional electrocautery during harvesting of the internal thoracic artery. Persistence in a Stationary Time-series
We study the persistence in a class of continuous stochastic processes that
are stationary only under integer shifts of time. We show that under certain
conditions, the persistence of such a continuous process reduces to the
persistence of a corresponding discrete sequence obtained from the measurement
of the process only at integer times. We then construct a specific sequence for
which the persistence can be computed even though the sequence is
non-Markovian. We show that this may be considered as a limiting case of
persistence in the diffusion process on a hierarchical lattice.Comment: 8 pages revte
Existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles
We investigate existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles for a
class of planar models including the incompressible shear case studied by
Antman and Malek-Madani. We establish that the resulting equations fall into
the class of symmetrizable hyperbolic--parabolic systems, hence spectral
stability implies linearized and nonlinear stability with sharp rates of decay.
The new contributions are treatment of the compressible case, formulation of a
rigorous nonlinear stability theory, including verification of stability of
small-amplitude Lax shocks, and the systematic incorporation in our
investigations of numerical Evans function computations determining stability
of large-amplitude and or nonclassical type shock profiles.Comment: 43 pages, 12 figure

O ensaio foi conduzido com macieiras 'Ohio Beauty' com 1 ano, cultivadas em vaso para se verificar sintomas e níveis de deficiências de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S e B. Conclui - se que: os níveis de nutrientes em folhas sadias e com sintomas de deficiência são: N -2,22 e 1,53%, P - 0,17 e 0,05%; K - 1,32 e 0,22%, Ca - 0,9¹* e 0,52%, Mg - 0,37 60,06%, S - 0,18 e 0,08%, B - 62 e 2k ppm. Os níveis de deficiência em folhas,a fome oculta" são: N - 1,74%, P - 0,07%, K - 0,30%, Ca - 0,65%, Mg - 0,09%, S - 0,09%, B-33ppm.A trial was carried out with one year old 'Ohio Beauty apples (grafted on 'Doucin'), grown on sand cu1ture, receining nutrient solutions lacking the following nutrients at the time: N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, and B. The main conclusions are as follows: as the adequate and inadequate levels from leaf analysis were, respectively: N -2.22 and 1.53%, P - 0,17 and 0.05%, K - 1.32 and 0.33%; Ca -0.9.4 and 0.52%, Mg - 0.37 and 0.06%; S -0.18 and 0.08%; B -62 and 2k ppm
Large-scale periodicity in the distribution of QSO absorption-line systems
The spatial-temporal distribution of absorption-line systems (ALSs) observed
in QSO spectra within the cosmological redshift interval z = 0.0--4.3 is
investigated on the base of our updated catalog of absorption systems. We
consider so called metallic systems including basically lines of heavy
elements. The sample of the data displays regular variations (with amplitudes ~
15 -- 20%) in the z-distribution of ALSs as well as in the eta-distribution,
where eta is a dimensionless line-of-sight comoving distance, relatively to
smoother dependences. The eta-distribution reveals the periodicity with period
Delta eta = 0.036 +/- 0.002, which corresponds to a spatial characteristic
scale (108 +/- 6) h(-1) Mpc or (alternatively) a temporal interval (350 +/- 20)
h(-1) Myr for the LambdaCDM cosmological model. We discuss a possibility of a
spatial interpretation of the results treating the pattern obtained as a trace

The surface detector array of the Telescope Array experiment
The Telescope Array (TA) experiment, located in the western desert of
Utah,USA, is designed for observation of extensive air showers from extremely
high energy cosmic rays. The experiment has a surface detector array surrounded
by three fluorescence detectors to enable simultaneous detection of shower
particles at ground level and fluorescence photons along the shower track. The
TA surface detectors and fluorescence detectors started full hybrid observation
in March, 2008. In this article we describe the design and technical features

New air fluorescence detectors employed in the Telescope Array experiment
Since 2007, the Telescope Array (TA) experiment, based in Utah, USA, has been
observing ultra high energy cosmic rays to understand their origins. The
experiment involves a surface detector (SD) array and three fluorescence
detector (FD) stations. FD stations, installed surrounding the SD array,
measure the air fluorescence light emitted from extensive air showers (EASs)
for precise determination of their energies and species. The detectors employed
at one of the three FD stations were relocated from the High Resolution Fly's
Eye experiment. At the other two stations, newly designed detectors were
constructed for the TA experiment. An FD consists of a primary mirror and a
camera equipped with photomultiplier tubes. To obtain the EAS parameters with
high accuracies, understanding the FD optical characteristics is important. In
this paper, we report the characteristics and installation of new FDs and the
performances of the FD components. The results of the monitored mirror
