    The Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope

    The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) is one of three science instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The IRS comprises four separate spectrograph modules covering the wavelength range from 5.3 to 38micron with spectral resolutions, R \~90 and 600, and it was optimized to take full advantage of the very low background in the space environment. The IRS is performing at or better than the pre-launch predictions. An autonomous target acquisition capability enables the IRS to locate the mid-infrared centroid of a source, providing the information so that the spacecraft can accurately offset that centroid to a selected slit. This feature is particularly useful when taking spectra of sources with poorly known coordinates.     Magnetite-doped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for phosphopeptide enrichment

    Reversible phosphorylation plays a key role in numerous biological processes. Mass spectrometry-based approaches are commonly used to analyze protein phosphorylation, but such analysis is challenging, largely due to the low phosphorylation stoichiometry. Hence, a number of phosphopeptide enrichment strategies have been developed, including metal oxide affinity chromatography (MOAC). Here, we describe a new material for performing MOAC that employs a magnetite-doped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), that is suitable for the creation of microwell array and microfluidic systems to enable low volume, high throughput analysis. Incubation time and sample loading were explored and optimized and demonstrate that the embedded magnetite is able to enrich phosphopeptides. This substrate-based approach is rapid, straightforward and suitable for simultaneously performing multiple, low volume enrichments

    Does outcome measurement of treatment for substance use disorder reflect the personal concerns of patients? A scoping review of measures recommended in Europe

    There are a growing number of authors stating that outcome measurement in treatment for substance use disorders should go beyond substance use and include other bio-psycho-social variables of interest. However, little is known about which topics tend to be covered by outcome measures and whether they reflect the typical concerns of this patient group. This study followed a scoping review methodology in which 42 outcome measures recommended by an EU agency for substance use disorders were reviewed. We identified the domains of problems covered by these 42 measures and then compared them with 54 domains derived from patients, in a previous study. We also explored how similar the existing measures were in terms of domains covered, and which patient derived domains tended to be represented in those measures. We identified 31domains of problems across the 42 measures, with ‘substance use’ and ‘psychological health’ among the commonest. Most measures were similar in content to each other and multidimensional. Almost all domains of problems identified in the outcome measures corresponded to concerns reported by patients. On the other hand, we found that several topics of relevance for patients were not covered by any of the measure included in our study. This suggests that existing outcome measurement does not always target aspects that affect patients’ lives, as reported directly by patients. Our study shows that outcome measurement needs to adopt a more flexible and comprehensive approach, by taking on board the problems experienced by patients in this population

    Prior COVID-19 infection may increase risk for developing endothelial dysfunction following hematopoietic cell transplantation

    Endothelial dysfunction underlies many of the major complications following hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), including transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA), veno-occlusive disease/sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (VOD/SOS), and engraftment syndrome (ES). Emerging evidence similarly implicates endothelitis and microangiopathy in severe COVID-19-related multi-system organ dysfunction. Given the overlap in these two illness states, we hypothesize that prior COVID-19 infection may increase risk for HCT-related endotheliopathies. This retrospective, multicenter study included patients aged 0-25 years who underwent autologous or allogeneic HCT for any indication between January 1, 2020 and September 21, 2021, with close attention to those infected with COVID-19 in either the six months prior to transplant or twelve months following transplant. Incidences of TA-TMA, VOD/SOS, and ES were compared among patients with COVID-19 infection pre-HCT and post-HCT, as well as with historical controls who were never infected with SARS-CoV-2. Those who underwent HCT following COVID-19 infection displayed significantly increased rates of TA-TMA compared to those who were never infected. Additionally, our data suggests a similar trend for increased VOD/SOS and ES rates, although this did not reach statistical significance. Therefore, a history of COVID-19 infection prior to undergoing HCT may be a nonmodifiable risk factor for endothelial-related complications following HCT. Further studies are warranted to better clarify this relationship among larger cohorts and in the era of the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variants
