    Nonresonant self-injection seeding of a gain-switched diode laser

    We demonstrate step-tunable single-mode operation of a gain-switched diode laser by nonresonant self-injection seeding from an uncoated glass slide used as an external cavity reflector. A spectral bandwidth reduction from 11 mn to 0.05 nm and wavelength tunability has been achieved for picosecond (near-transform-limited) pulses with little effect on other laser characteristics. Good agreement with numerical simulations based on a compound-cavity laser model is also reported

    Creating realistic synthetic populations at varying spatial scales: A comparative critique of population synthesis techniques

    There are several established methodologies for generating synthetic populations. These include deterministic reweighting, conditional probability (Monte Carlo simulation) and simulated annealing. However, each of these approaches is limited by, for example, the level of geography to which it can be applied, or number of characteristics of the real population that can be replicated. The research examines and critiques the performance of each of these methods over varying spatial scales. Results show that the most consistent and accurate populations generated over all the spatial scales are produced from the simulated annealing algorithm. The relative merits and limitations of each method are evaluated in the discussion

    Estimating Small Area Income Deprivation: An Iterative Proportional Fitting Approach

    Small area estimation and in particular the estimation of small area income deprivation has potential value in the development of new or alternative components of multiple deprivation indices. These new approaches enable the development of income distribution threshold based as opposed to benefit count based measures of income deprivation and so enable the alignment of regional and national measures such as the Households Below Average Income with small area measures. This paper briefly reviews a number of approaches to small area estimation before describing in some detail an iterative proportional fitting based spatial microsimulation approach. This approach is then applied to the estimation of small area HBAI rates at the small area level in Wales in 2003-5. The paper discusses the results of this approach, contrasts them with contemporary ‘official’ income deprivation measures for the same areas and describes a range of ways to assess the robustness of the results

    Calibration of a spatial simulation model with volunteered geographical information

    For many scientific disciplines, the continued progression of information technology has increased the availability of data, computation and analytical methodologies including simulation and visualisation. Geographical information science is no exception. In this article, we investigate the possibilities for deployment of e-infrastructures to inform spatial planning, analysis and policy-making. We describe an existing architecture that feeds both static and dynamic simulation models from a variety of sources, including not only administrative datasets but also attitudes and behaviours which are harvested online from crowds. This infrastructure also supports visualisation and computationally intensive processing. The main aim of this article is to illustrate how spatial simulation models can be calibrated with crowd-sourced data. We introduce an example in which popular attitudes to congestion charging in a major UK city (Manchester) were collected, with promotional support from a high-profile media organisation (the BBC). These data are used to estimate the parameters of a transport simulation model, using a hungry estimation procedure which is deployed within a high-performance computational grid. We indicate how the resulting model might be used to evaluate the impact of alternative policy options for regulating the traffic in Manchester. Whilst the procedure is novel in itself, we argue that greater credibility could be added by the incorporation of open-source simulation models and by the use of social networking mechanisms to share policy evaluations much more widely

    The elements of a computational infrastructure for social simulation

    Applications of simulation modelling in social science domains are varied and increasingly widespread. The effective deployment of simulation models depends on access to diverse datasets, the use of analysis capabilities, the ability to visualize model outcomes and to capture, share and re-use simulations as evidence in research and policy-making. We describe three applications of e-social science that promote social simulation modelling, data management and visualization. An example is outlined in which the three components are brought together in a transport planning context. We discuss opportunities and benefits for the combination of these and other components into an e-infrastructure for social simulation and review recent progress towards the establishment of such an infrastructure

    Spectral modification of type IA fibre Bragg gratings by high power near infra-red lasers

    We report the first experimental measurements on the spectral modification of Type IA fibre Bragg gratings, incorporated in an optical network, which result from the use of high-power, near infrared lasers. The fibre grating properties are modified in a controlled manner by exploiting the characteristics of the inherent 1400nm absorption band of the optical fibre, which grows in strength during the Type IA grating inscription. If the fibre network is illuminated with a high power laser, having an emission wavelength coincident with the absorption band, the Type IA centre wavelength and chirp can be modified. Furthermore, partial grating erasure is demonstrated. This has serious implications when using Type IA gratings in an optical network, as their spectrum can be modified using purely optical methods (no external heating source acts on the fibre), and to their long-term stability as the grating is shown to decay. Conversely, suitably stabilised gratings can be spectrally tailored, for tuning fibre lasers or edge filter modification in sensing applications, by purely optical means

    Many western societies are predicting an important shift in the composition of their populations. The clear historical and anticipated future trend is for the elderly population to increase, both in numbers and as a proportion of the total population (Rechel et al., 2009; European Commission, 2014). For England, the latest 2014-based principal projection by the Office for National Statistics (ONS, 2015) shows the English population aged 50 and older increasing from 19.4 million in 2014 to 24.8 million in 2034, a gain of 5.4 million. This is in the context of a more modest increase of 2.1 million in the 49 and younger population

    Determinants of physiological uptake of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose in palatine tonsils

    To determine the extent of physiological variation of uptake of 18F-flurodeoxyglucose (FDG) within palatine tonsils. To define normal limits for side-to-side variation and characterize factors affecting tonsillar uptake of FDG.Over a period of 16 weeks 299 adult patients at low risk for head and neck pathology, attending our center for FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scans were identified. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was recorded for each palatine tonsil. For each patient age, gender, smoking status, scan indication and prior tonsillectomy status as well as weather conditions were noted.There was a wide variation in palatine tonsil FDG uptake with SUVmax values between 1.3 and 11.4 recorded. There was a strong left to right correlation for tonsillar FDG uptake within each patient (P < .01). The right palatine tonsil showed increased FDG uptake (4.63) compared to the left (4.47) (P < .01). In multivariate analysis, gender, scan indication, and prevailing weather had no significant impact of tonsillar FDG uptake. Lower tonsillar uptake was seen in patients with a prior history of tonsillectomy (4.13) than those without this history (4.64) (P < .01). Decreasing tonsillar FDG uptake was seen with advancing age (P < .01). Significantly lower uptake was seen in current smokers (SUVmax 4.2) than nonsmokers (SUV 4.9) (P = .03).Uptake of FDG in palatine tonsils is variable but shows a strong side-to-side correlation. We suggest the left/ right SUVmax ratio as a guide to normality with a first to 99th percentiles of (0.70–1.36) for use in patients not suspected to have tonsillar pathology

    One-pot synthesis of micron-sized polybetaine particles: innovative use of supercritical carbon dioxide

    Polybetaines exhibit unique properties combining anti-polyelectrolyte and low protein fouling behaviour, as well as biocompatibility. To date, the synthesis of polybetaine particles >50 nm has proved to be extremely challenging with standard emulsion and dispersion techniques being unsuccessful. Here we present the first reported synthesis of micron-sized, discrete cross-linked polybetaine particles, using polymerisation in scCO2 with methanol as a co-solvent. Discrete particles are produced only when the methanol is efficiently removed in situ using scCO2 extraction. A relatively high crosslinking agent initial concentration (10 wt%) was found to result in the most well defined particles, and particle integrity reduced as the crosslinking agent initial concentration was decreased. A monomer loading of between 3.0 × 10−2 mol L−1 and 1.8 × 10−1 mol L−1 resulted in discrete micron sized particles, with significant agglomoration occuring as the monomer loading was increased further. A spherical morphology and extremely low size dispersity was observed by SEM analysis for the optimised particles. The particles were readily re-dispersed in aqueous solution and light scattering measurements confirmed their low size dispersity
