    Hepatic Arterioportal Fistula: A Curable Cause of Portal Hypertension in Infancy

    Hepatic arterioportal fistulae are a rare cause of portal hypertension. The case is reported of a twoyear old girl with a congenital arterioportal fistula, who presented with splenomegaly and ascites. Colour doppler ultrasound showed a large shunt between the left hepatic artery and a branch of the left portal vein, producing a reversal of flow in the main portal vein. She was treated by a formal left hemihepatectomy, which has been successful in eliminating the fistula and its consequent portal hypertension in the long term. The literature regarding arterioportal fistulae and their treatment is reviewed

    Accurate Calculations of Rotationally Inelastic Scattering Cross Sections Using Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory

    For computational treatment of rotationally inelastic scattering of molecules, we propose to use the mixed quantum/classical theory, MQCT. The old idea of treating translational motion classically, while quantum mechanics is used for rotational degrees of freedom, is developed to the new level and is applied to Na + N2 collisions in a broad range of energies. Comparison with full-quantum calculations shows that MQCT accurately reproduces all, even minor, features of energy dependence of cross sections, except scattering resonances at very low energies. The remarkable success of MQCT opens up wide opportunities for computational predictions of inelastic scattering cross sections at higher temperatures and/or for polyatomic molecules and heavier quenchers, which is computationally close to impossible within the full-quantum framework

    Mixed Quantum/Classical Approach for Description of Molecular Collisions in Astrophysical Environments

    An efficient and accurate mixed quantum/classical theory approach for computational treatment of inelastic scattering is extended to describe collision of an atom with a general asymmetric-top rotor polyatomic molecule. Quantum mechanics, employed to describe transitions between the internal states of the molecule, and classical mechanics, employed for description of scattering of the atom, are used in a self-consistent manner. Such calculations for rotational excitation of HCOOCH3 in collisions with He produce accurate results at scattering energies above 15 cm–1, although resonances near threshold, below 5 cm–1, cannot be reproduced. Importantly, the method remains computationally affordable at high scattering energies (here up to 1000 cm–1), which enables calculations for larger molecules and at higher collision energies than was possible previously with the standard full-quantum approach. Theoretical prediction of inelastic cross sections for a number of complex organic molecules observed in space becomes feasible using this new computational tool

    990-53 Effects on Cardiovascular End Points and Psychological Variables of Metoprolol and Verapamil in Patients with Stable Angina Pectoris — The Angina Prognosis Study in Stockholm (APSIS)

    The effect of treatment with metoprolol or verapamil was investigated in 809 patients with stable angina pectoris. End points for the study were: death, nonfatal cardiovascular events and three psychological variables reflecting aspects of quality of life. Nonfatal cardiovascular events included acute myocardial infarction, incapacitating or unstable angina, cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular events. The psychological variables were aggregate measures of psychosomatic symptoms and sleep disturbances and an evaluation of life satisfaction on a visual analogue scale. The mean age of the patients was 59±7 years and 30% were women. The patients were followed for a total of 2887 patient years, with a median follow-up time of 3.6 years. Total cardiovascular mortality in the metoprolol versus verapamit group were 5.4% versus 6.2% and 4.7% versus 4.7% respectively. Nonfatal cardiovascular events occurred in 26.4 and 24.1%, respectively. Psychosomatic symptoms and sleep disturbances were significantly improved in both treatment groups. The magnitude of change was small and not significantly different. Life satisfaction did not change on either drug. Withdrawals due to side effects occurred in 11.1 and 14.6%, respectively.ConclusionThis large scale long term study shows that both drugs were well tolerated and had the same effect on mortality, cardiovascular end points and measures of quality of life

    The effects of majority requirements, selectorate composition and uncertainty in indirect presidential elections: The case of Estonia

    This article assesses the effects of common features in the indirect election of presidents in parliamentary republics. In particular, it examines the influence of majority requirements, selectorate composition and uncertainty on party strategies, using Estonia (1996-2016) as a crucial case for analysis. The analysis demonstrates that the lack of a plurality run-off effectively eliminated incentives for inter-party cooperation and strategic voting. It furthermore shows that shifts in the partisan composition and control of the selectorate from parliament to electoral college provided considerable opportunities for agenda manipulation. Subsequently, results only rarely reflected the parliamentary balance of power. Last, although overall indicators suggest greater congruence between parliament and electoral college over time, this proliferated rather than reduced parties’ uncertainty over the electoral outcome as non parliamentary electors voted based on local interests and acted independently from national party leaders

    A two-layer approach to the coupled coherent states method

    In this paper a two-layer scheme is outlined for the coupled coherent states (CCS) method, dubbed two-layer CCS (2L-CCS). The theoretical framework is motivated by that of the multiconfigurational Ehrenfest (MCE) method, where different dynamical descriptions are used for different subsystems of a quantum mechanical system. This leads to a flexible representation of the wavefunction, making the method particularly suited to the study of composite systems. It was tested on a 20-dimensional asymmetric system-bath tunnelling problem, with results compared to a benchmark calculation, as well as existing CCS, MP/SOFT and CI expansion methods. The two-layer method was found to lead to improved short and long term propagation over standard CCS, alongside improved numerical efficiency and parallel scalability. These promising results provide impetus for future development of the method for on-the-fly direct dynamics calculations

    The Search for Gravitational Waves

    Experiments aimed at searching for gravitational waves from astrophysical sources have been under development for the last 40 years, but only now are sensitivities reaching the level where there is a real possibility of detections being made within the next five years. In this article a history of detector development will be followed by a description of current detectors such as LIGO, VIRGO, GEO 600, TAMA 300, Nautilus and Auriga. Preliminary results from these detectors will be discussed and related to predicted detection rates for some types of sources.     Observation of the Dynamic Beta Effect at CESR with CLEO

    Using the silicon strip detector of the CLEO experiment operating at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR), we have observed that the horizontal size of the luminous region decreases in the presence of the beam-beam interaction from what is expected without the beam-beam interaction. The dependence on the bunch current agrees with the prediction of the dynamic beta effect.
