The aim of this study is to figure out profiles of bridge players and analyzing them according to their intelligence areas. The sample of the study is consist of 100 volunteers out of 200 bridge players who have attended "Çukurova open double bridge championship" in Adana, Turkey at February 2016. Data have been collected via "Personal Information Form" and "Multiple Intelligence Areas Assessment Scale" developed by Gülşen (2015). Data have been analyzed not only via descriptive statistics but also Mann Whitney U test was used for double comparison and Kruskal Wallis H test for multiple comparison. The profile of the players contributed to the study is; 30% women, 70% men, 25% of the population is between 51 and 60 years age, 67% is married, 71% has bachelor degree, 57% is working for government sector and 33% for private sector. Most of the players are working as teacher, engineer, or medical doctor and 50% of the population is performing a physical activity like walking, football and basketball. It is found that players' internal intelligence area is the highest among all intelligence areas; additionally the lowest one is found as the rhythmic intelligence. It is determined that the players' from different business sectors have significant differences among internal, analytic, interpersonal, physical/kinesthetic intelligence areas, and significant difference is determined for the physical/kinesthetic intelligence among the players who perform physical activities and who do not

Objective:This study was planned to evaluate the clinical features and outcomes of patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs) on-hours [workdays (WD)] and out of hours [time-off (TO)].Materials and Methods:Ethics committee approval was obtained for this study. Patients hospitalized in adult ICUs between July 2021 and January 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups: those who were accepted during on-hours (group WD, WD 08.00 am-05.00 pm) and out of hours (group TO; WD-05.01 pm-07.59 am, weekends, and all public holidays). The groups were compared in terms of patient characteristics and intensive care outcomes. Results:Of the 173 patients included in the study, 69.94% (n=121) were hospitalized during out-of-hours and 30.05% (n=52) during on-hours. The median age of the patients was 70.3±9.5 years, 58.4% were male and 41.6% were female. The number of patients hospitalized in TO was statistically significantly higher than the number of patients in WD (p=0.04). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic data, except that chronic renal failure (18.2%, p=0.024) was more common as a comorbidity in TO patients. The need for continuous renal replacement therapies treatment, which is one of the reasons for ICU admission, was found to be significantly higher in TO patients (p=0.048). The length of stay in the ICU and intubation period was higher in group TO (p=0.006, p=0.022). It resulted in death in 34.1% of the patients. There was no significant difference in mortality and discharge between the groups. Conclusion:In our study, the clinical outcome was found to be similar in patients followed up in ICUs under WD and TO conditions. This result; This can be attributed to the fact that the shift team is not different in our hospital, the number of experienced health personnel is high, and the necessary diagnostic procedures are not delayed

WOS: 000490561600018In sports teams, team leaders play an important role for the success of athletes and their high level of performance. The ones who lead the team are generally the coaches. Therefore, this study aims to examine the athletes' perceptions and preferences of leadership behaviors by gender of athletes. A total of 20 studies that included 173 studies using Chelladurai & Saleh's sport leadership scale were included in the study. Effect sizes for random effects model; the study included 20 studies, which were sub-dimensions of training and instruction, democratic, autocratic, social support and positive feedback by using Hedge "g" coefficient. Different methods were used to examine publication bias in funnel plots, Duval and Tweedie's trim and fill method and meta-analysis such as Egger's regression test. As a result of the findings, it was found that there was no differences in gender in training and instruction, autocratic, social support and positive feedback except democratic- which are sub-dimensions of leadership behaviors in sports, and it was found that the gender of the athletes were not related to their perception of leadership behaviors and preferences This result shows that the gender of the athletes is not a demographic variable that is effective in their perceptions and preferences of leadership behaviours except for democratic behavior. This study provides valuable information for understanding the dynamics of sports leadership among young athletes and the importance of the gender of the athlete in the athlete-coach interaction

AimAcute respiratory distress syndrome is the primary clinical problem that requires follow-up at the intensive care units. High Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy has become an increasingly popular method by reducing the need for intubation but determining which patient will benefit from High Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy is an important issue. Methods Seventy patients who followed up with acute respiratory distress syndrome related COVID-19 treated with High Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Systems as initial treatment at the intensive care units were retrospectively review. The primary endpoint of this study is to identify factors correlating with failure (mortality and invasive mechanical ventilator requirement) of High Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy in the treatment of COVID-19-related severe ARDS. The secondary aim of this study is to determine the ROX index measured at the 12th hour, which will indicate the need for intubation in critically ill patients followed up with HFNC.Results Advanced age, male gender, and low ROX index were independent variables affecting High Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy failure. While mortality was lowest in patients who completed the process with High Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy treatment, patients who were intubated early (12-24h) had lower mortality than those who were intubated later (>24h) (Mortality rates were %4,3 ,%65,6 ,%93,3 respectively). The cut-off value for ROX index, which will indicate the need for intubation, was found to be 2.84. ConclusionHigh Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy can be an effective treatment method in the follow-up of patients with COVID-19-related severe respiratory failure. Despite this, the requirement for intubation develops in two third of the patients. Early intubation reduces mortality in patients who fail High Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy, and the easily calculated ROX index is a useful parameter to determine the need for intubation

Metastatic Basal Cell Carcinoma Accompanying Gorlin Syndrome

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome or basal cell nevus syndrome is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by skeletal anomalies, numerous cysts observed in the jaw, and multiple basal cell carcinoma of the skin, which may be accompanied by falx cerebri calcification. Basal cell carcinoma is the most commonly skin tumor with slow clinical course and low metastatic potential. Its concomitance with Gorlin syndrome, resulting from a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene, may substantially change morbidity and mortality. A 66-year-old male patient with a history of recurrent basal cell carcinoma was presented with exophthalmus in the left eye and the lesions localized in the left lateral orbita and left zygomatic area. His physical examination revealed hearing loss, gapped teeth, highly arched palate, and frontal prominence. Left orbital mass, cystic masses at frontal and ethmoidal sinuses, and multiple pulmonary nodules were detected at CT scans. Basal cell carcinoma was diagnosed from biopsy of ethmoid sinus. Based on the clinical and typical radiological characteristics (falx cerebri calcification, bifid costa, and odontogenic cysts), the patient was diagnosed with metastatic skin basal cell carcinoma accompanied by Gorlin syndrome. Our case is a basal cell carcinoma with aggressive course accompanying a rarely seen syndrome

To compare the effects of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on osteoblast cells in a cell culture model. Fifty thousand neonatal rat calvarial osteoblast-like cells per milliliter were seeded and 0.06 mT PEMF, 0.2 mT PEMF, and LLLT at 808 nm were applied for 24 and 96 h on the cells. To evaluate cellular proliferation and differentiation, specimens were examined for DNA synthesis, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, cell numbers, and viability of the cells. Morphological appearances of the cells were observed using scanning electron microcopy after 24 and 96 h of incubation. At 24 and 96 h, the control group had a higher cell proliferation than 0.06 and 0.2 mT PEMF groups (p = 0.001). At 96 h, 0.2 mT PEMF group had higher cell proliferation rate than 0.06 mT PEMF and LLLT groups (p = 0.001). The cell count and cell viability in 0.2 mT PEMF group were higher than the 0.06-mT PEMF and LLLT groups, although these differences were not statistically significant at 96 h (p > 0.05). At 24 and 96 h, cell viability in the control group was higher than the test groups. Alkaline phosphatase levels of the groups were comparable in both time intervals (p > 0.05). 0.2 mT PEMF application on osteoblast-like cells led to cell proliferation and differentiation better than 0.06 mT PEMF and LLLT at 808 nm, although a remarkable effect of both PEMF and LLLT could not be detected. The ALP activity of 0.2 and 0.06 mT PEMF and LLLT were comparable

No full text
OBJECTIVES: To uncover clinical epidemiology, microbiological characteristics and outcome determinants of hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HA-BSIs) in Turkish ICU patients. METHODS: The EUROBACT II was a prospective observational multicontinental cohort study. We performed a subanalysis of patients from 24 Turkish ICUs included in this study. Risk factors for mortality were identified using multivariable Cox frailty models. RESULTS: Of 547 patients, 58.7% were male with a median [IQR] age of 68 [55-78]. Most frequent sources of HA-BSIs were intravascular catheter [182, (33.3%)] and lower respiratory tract [175, (32.0%)]. Among isolated pathogens (n = 599), 67.1% were Gram-negative, 21.5% Gram-positive and 11.2% due to fungi. Carbapenem resistance was present in 90.4% of Acinetobacter spp., 53.1% of Klebsiella spp. and 48.8% of Pseudomonas spp. In monobacterial Gram-negative HA-BSIs (n = 329), SOFA score (aHR 1.20, 95% CI 1.14-1.27), carbapenem resistance (aHR 2.46, 95% CI 1.58-3.84), previous myocardial infarction (aHR 1.86, 95% CI 1.12-3.08), COVID-19 admission diagnosis (aHR 2.95, 95% CI 1.25-6.95) and not achieving source control (aHR 2.02, 95% CI 1.15-3.54) were associated with mortality. However, availability of clinical pharmacists (aHR 0.23, 95% CI 0.06-0.90) and source control (aHR 0.46, 95% CI 0.28-0.77) were associated with survival. In monobacterial Gram-positive HA-BSIs (n = 93), SOFA score (aHR 1.29, 95% CI 1.17-1.43) and age (aHR 1.05, 95% CI 1.03-1.08) were associated with mortality, whereas source control (aHR 0.41, 95% CI 0.20-0.87) was associated with survival. CONCLUSIONS: Considering high antimicrobial resistance rate, importance of source control and availability of clinical pharmacists, a multifaceted management programme should be adopted in Turkish ICUs.European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) (ESICM Trials Group Awards 2018) ; European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) (ESCMID Study Group Research Grants 2018) study Group for Infections in Critically Ill Patients (ESGCIP) ; Norva Dahlia (2018 Norva Dahlia study grant) foundation ; Redcliffe Hospital Private Practice Trust Fun
