The homology of defective crystal lattices and the continuum limit

The problem of extending fields that are defined on lattices to fields defined on the continua that they become in the continuum limit is basically one of continuous extension from the 0-skeleton of a simplicial complex to its higher-dimensional skeletons. If the lattice in question has defects, as well as the order parameter space of the field, then this process might be obstructed by characteristic cohomology classes on the lattice with values in the homotopy groups of the order parameter space. The examples from solid-state physics that are discussed are quantum spin fields on planar lattices with point defects or orientable space lattices, vorticial flows or director fields on lattices with dislocations or disclinations, and monopole fields on lattices with point defects.Comment: 38 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

A superconducting quenchgun for delivering lunar derived oxygen to lunar orbit

    Get PDF
The development of a parametric model for a superconducting quenchgun for launching lunar derived liquid oxygen to lunar orbit is detailed. An overview is presented of the quenchgun geometry and operating principles, a definition of the required support systems, and the methods used to size the quenchgun launcher and support systems. An analysis assessing the impact of a lunar quenchgun on the OEXP Lunar Evolution Case Study is included

Pharmaceutical Advertising: A Qualitative Comparison of the Internet and National Magazines

The Internet offers tremendous potential benefits to consumers in terms of increased convenience, choices and information. Yet, along with such benefits, comes new risks to consumers, including an increased risk from fraud, deception and misinformation (FDA and the Internet Conference, October, 1996)

Uniform materials and the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient in finite elasto-plasticity

    Get PDF
In this work we analyze the relation between the multiplicative decomposition F=FeFp\mathbf F=\mathbf F^{e}\mathbf F^{p} of the deformation gradient as a product of the elastic and plastic factors and the theory of uniform materials. We prove that postulating such a decomposition is equivalent to having a uniform material model with two configurations - total ϕ\phi and the inelastic ϕ1\phi_{1}. We introduce strain tensors characterizing different types of evolutions of the material and discuss the form of the internal energy and that of the dissipative potential. The evolution equations are obtained for the configurations (ϕ,ϕ1)(\phi,\phi_{1}) and the material metric g\mathbf g. Finally the dissipative inequality for the materials of this type is presented. It is shown that the conditions of positivity of the internal dissipation terms related to the processes of plastic and metric evolution provide the anisotropic yield criteria

Public Perceptions of Rural County Social Service Agencies

    Get PDF
Data gathered via interviews and mailed questionnaires in two rural counties in Western Wisconsin indicate that large segments of the general citizenry and public opinion leaders are generally more supportive of social services than common stereotypes suggest, while also voicing criticism of what are seen as inequities in the administration of services. Large majorities view social services as an institutionalized practice in American society, large segments hold negative views of recipients, and the samples studied are in general ill-informed about social service practices. Implications are drawn regarding public information programs aimed at better informing the public about social services

A trajectory generation and system characterization model for cislunar low-thrust spacecraft. Volume 2: Technical manual

    Get PDF
The documentation of the Trajectory Generation and System Characterization Model for the Cislunar Low-Thrust Spacecraft is presented in Technical and User's Manuals. The system characteristics and trajectories of low thrust nuclear electric propulsion spacecraft can be generated through the use of multiple system technology models coupled with a high fidelity trajectory generation routine. The Earth to Moon trajectories utilize near Earth orbital plane alignment, midcourse control dependent upon the spacecraft's Jacobian constant, and capture to target orbit utilizing velocity matching algorithms. The trajectory generation is performed in a perturbed two-body equinoctial formulation and the restricted three-body formulation. A single control is determined by the user for the interactive midcourse portion of the trajectory. The full spacecraft system characteristics and trajectory are provided as output

The Effects of Sex-Sorted Semen on Southern Dairy Farms

    Get PDF
This paper examines the impact of sex-sorted semen adoption on dairy farm level economics. Representative dairies are used to simulate the financial impacts of moving to this new technology. Key economic, financial and herd dynamics will be compared among dairies to show how the uses of sex-sorted semen will affect dairy farms. All seven of the representative dairies that were analyzed sold surplus replacement heifers using sex-sorted semen. The increase use of sex-sorted semen can have very positive impacts on dairies throughout the Southern United States.Dairy production, sex sorted semen, production economics, scenario analysis, Agribusiness, Farm Management, Livestock Production/Industries, Production Economics,
