This paper develops a chapter of my dissertation,L’arte del percepire: esperienze contemporanee di Teatro nella Natura in Italia(The art of perception: contemporary Italian experiences of Theatre in theNature). I propose a particular point of view over these theatre practices: I claim that they can beapproached and analytically compared to some features of rural teatrality and rituality, such asidentified by Paolo Toschi in his classical book,Le origini del teatro italiano, a ground study for understanding the connections between theatre and folklore. Actually we can identify long-lastingdevices (procession, singing, storytelling, dance, ritual) which were typical of rural teatrality andrituality, and which occur, as well, in contemporary theatre practices in the nature, despite the radicaldifferences that separate popular tradition from contemporary theatre research

BETWEEN HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY: CARTOGRAPHY AS REFLECTION AND HISTORICAL RESEARCH TOOL

    Get PDF
In order to reconstruct the ancient landscape, the cartographical analysis offers a comprehensive outlook, at the same time syntethic and panoramic, of great importance to understand all changes occurred in the past by the human or nature action. In this work the importance of cartography is highlighted both as fundamental tool for the historical and archaeological research as result of it, by means of some practical examples

Territorial Governance for Sustainable Development: A Multi-Level Governance Analysis in the Italian Context

The United Nations’ 2030 Agenda is known for its holistic and global dimension, as demonstrated by the saying “no one left behind”. However, local governments still struggle to take tangible actions and to reallocate resources for implementing Sustainability Strategies. With the aim to improve multi-level governance for sustainable development with complex and cross-sectoral policies, the research investigates how much Regional Sustainable Development Strategies (RSDS) and public authorities’ structures are mutually consistent. Starting from the existing governance framework at the regional and local levels (Province and Metropolitan City), the study analyzes: the organizational structures/functions of the public institutions and the integration between their competences and the RSDS targets. The case study is the Lombardy Region in Italy. The analyses were conducted through a review of key legislations and regulations, and the introduction of a homogeneous reading grid that identifies the principal “Invariant Functional Macro Areas” (IFMA) of local authorities. The paper highlights the structural weakness in implementing and localizing EU Strategic Agendas and examines the extent to which public offices are currently structured to adequately address the RSDS challenges. The research shows how sectoral fragmentation of competence can collide with the holistic layout of sustainability: new integrated approaches are needed to strengthen cross-sectoral dialogue and cooperation within and between public institutional bodies

This contribution has been included in a report, based on training courses held at the Istituto Superiore di Sanit? (the Italian National Institute of Health. This report consists of two parts. The first part gives a detailed panorama on the general aspects of rare diseases, in particular: the activities of the National Centre for Rare Diseases; the Italian legislation on rare diseases; problems in health assistance related to DRGs (Diagnosis Related Groups); the national network of rare diseases as a model for the health assistance and epidemiological activities; the national register of rare diseases as an epidemiological instrument. The scope is to provide information to health professionals who are involved in epidemiological activities. The second part is oriented to clinical activity. Some of the rare diseases or groups of diseases are treated by experts in the diagnosis and treatment of patients in paediatric age. The objective is to highlight the problems of assistance from the health operator\u27s point of view. Examples are presented to understand the rationale behind the health policy and public health measures

In vitro cell models merging circadian rhythms and brain waves for personalized neuromedicine

New evidence is emerging about the dynamics of interaction between circadian rhythms and brain waves, whose coordination occurs through the entrainment process. The so-called “oscillopathies” or dysfunctions in synchronization of neuronal oscillation in key brain networks lead to the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. A typical example of alteration is insomnia, a risk factor for the oscillopathies, increasingly widespread worldwide. Recently, synchronization of circadian rhythms in cell cultures has allowed an improvement in the physiological relevance of responses to stimuli. Furthermore, brain organoids and neurons cultured in microfluidic systems are the latest frontiers for in vitro reproduction of rhythmic electrical signals. In this review, the combination of these in vitro experimental approaches is proposed as suitable for a more direct investigation on the common mechanisms and neurophysiological substrates underlying brain waves and circadian oscillations, and useful to evaluate the effects of “oscillotherapeutic” drugs for personalized neuromedicine

Tear ferning test and pathological effects on ocular surface before and after topical cyclosporine in vernal keratoconjunctivitis patients

Background: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a rare ocular surface inflammatory disease that affects mainly boys in the first decade of life. Clinical observations show that it generally regresses spontaneously with the onset of puberty, but therapeutic measures must be taken before then to control the course of the disease. Purpose: To evaluate the role of the lacrimal mucous component in VKC patients and compare tear ferning test (TFT) modifications, MUC5AC levels in tears, and density of conjunctival goblet cells to clinical characteristics before and after treatment with cyclosporine A (CY) in eye drops. Methods: Forty-seven patients affected by VKC and 30 healthy subjects aged between 3 and 16 years of life were enrolled. All individuals were submitted to complete eye examination and skin prick test (SPT) for the most common allergens. Then, they were subjected to collection of the tears and to impression cytology to evaluate TFT, MUC5AC levels, and conjunctival goblet cell density, before and after treatment with CY in eye drops. Results: Comparing the VKC group vs. the control group at baseline, a significant alteration in the degree of the ferns was found, indicating a pathological condition of the lacrimal mucous layer. In addition, an increased number of goblet cells were observed in the patients. The concentration of lacrimal secretory mucins (MUC5AC) did not show significant differences between the 2 groups. Patients treated with CY have reported improvements of some signs and symptoms of disease activity, including TFT, and a tendency of conjunctival goblet cell density to normalise. Conclusions: The results obtained demonstrated for the first time a significant alteration of the lacrimal mucin component evaluated in the VKC group, and an improvement of the latter after CY therapy

On the sharp Hardy inequality in Sobolev-Slobodecki\u{\i} spaces

We study the sharp constant in the Hardy inequality for fractional Sobolev spaces defined on open subsets of the Euclidean space. We first list some properties of such a constant, as well as of the associated variational problem. We then restrict the discussion to open convex sets and compute such a sharp constant, by constructing suitable supersolutions by means of the distance function. Such a method of proof works only for s p≥1s\,p\ge 1 or for Ω\Omega being a half-space. We exhibit a simple example suggesting that this method can not work for s p<1s\,p<1 and Ω\Omega different from a half-space. The case s p<1s\,p<1 for a generic convex set is left as an interesting open problem, except in the Hilbertian setting (i.e. for p=2p=2): in this case we can compute the sharp constant in the whole range 0<s<10<s<1. This completes a result which was left open in the literature.Comment: 45 pages, 3 figure

Leontief Meets Markov: Sectoral Vulnerabilities Through Circular Connectivity

    Get PDF
Economists have been aware of the mapping between an Input-Output (I-O, hereinafter) table and the adjacency matrix of a weighted digraph for several decades (Solow, Econometrica 20(1):29–46, 1952). An I-O table may be interpreted as a network in which edges measure money flows to purchase inputs that go into production, whilst vertices represent economic industries. However, only recently the language and concepts of complex networks (Newman 2010) have been more intensively applied to the study of interindustry relations (McNerney et al. Physica A Stat Mech Appl, 392(24):6427–6441, 2013). The aim of this paper is to study sectoral vulnerabilities in I-O networks, by connecting the formal structure of a closed I-O model (Leontief, Rev Econ Stat, 19(3):109–132, 1937) to the constituent elements of an ergodic, regular Markov chain (Kemeny and Snell 1976) and its chance process specification as a random walk on a graph. We provide an economic interpretation to a local, sector-specific vulnerability index based on mean first passage times, computed by means of the Moore-Penrose inverse of the asymmetric graph Laplacian (Boley et al. Linear Algebra Appl, 435(2):224–242, 2011). Traversing from the most central to the most peripheral sector of the economy in 60 countries between 2005 and 2015, we uncover cross-country salient roles for certain industries, pervasive features of structural change and (dis)similarities between national economies, in terms of their sectoral vulnerabilities

A New Approach for Proper Reporting of Pension Benefit Obligations in the Financial Statements of “Old Funds” for Professionals

    Get PDF
In this paper, we focus on the disclosure of pension liabilities for entities referred to in Italian Legislative Decree 30 June 1994 no. 509 (also called “old funds” for professionals), which is crucial for a suitable communication. After illustrating the limits of current statutory financial statements‟ in relation to the information they provide on pension benefit obligations, we propose three potential solutions to bridge the gap. Each of these proposals helps ensure the completeness and clarity of financial reporting and improves upon the informational capacity and quality of disclosure. In our opinion, one of these approaches, in particular, would be preferred because of its ease of adoption. Indeed, the disclosure in the explanatory notes allows for the quantification of pension benefit obligations, and hence a more proper evaluation of entities in the medium/long- term, with no impact on annual economic-financial results as reported in the balance sheet and the income statement
