Anxiety Correlates of Sex Role Identity

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine differences in anxiety levels between the sexes and between sex role identification groups (as defined by scores on a test of masculinity-femininity). Possible explanations for these differences were explored using a questionnaire made up of an openness versus closedness scale, a liberalism versus conservatism scale, and a cross-sex versus same-sex parent identification scale. A sample of 108 females and 71 males was administered Gough\u27s Femininity Scale, Cattell\u27s IPAT Anxiety Scale Questionnaire, Taylor\u27s Manifest Anxiety Scale, and a questionnaire devised for this particular study. The sexes did not differ significantly in anxiety level but it was found that feminine persons of both sexes had higher anxiety levels on both of the anxiety scales employed. Females were more open than males on the openness versus closedness scale and feminine persons of both sexes were more open than masculine persons. This study suggests the possibility that higher anxiety levels in females and feminine persons may be due to greater openness

Sex Role Preference, Sibling Status, and Bonding Behavior in Children

The focus of this study was to explores some of the important variables in sex role development in children. The major hypotheses were concerned with differences between the independent variables child\u27s grade level, sex, and sibling status (ordinal position and sex of sibling)on the dependent variables sex role preference and bonding behavior. Bonding, a concept which has not been examined in conjunction with sex role preference, was here defined as (1)the degree to which a child affiliates with members of his own sex and (2)the degree to which a child excludes opposite sex play-mates from his affiliative realm. Subjects were fifty-six kindergarten and thirty fourth grade boys and girls from two-child families in which the spacing between siblings was four years or less. A pilot study was conducted to gather reliability and validity data on the measures of the bonding behavior. Subjects were orally administered the It Scale for Children (which measures sex role preference) and the Bonding Behavior Questionnaire, which was one of four measures of bonding behavior. Each child was also observed for one hour while he was in free play. The Observation Checklist was employed to monitor bonding behavoir during this time. Teachers also filled out a Teacher Rating for each child and ranked the children on the extent to which they exhibited bonding behavior. Data relating to the main hypotheses was subjected to analyses of variance. The single significant finding was kindergarten children with older siblings bonded to a greater extent than fourth graders with older siblings or subjects with younger siblings. A modelling explanation was posited: Children learn by observing older siblings that boys play with boys and girls play with girls. No significant correlations were obtained between the It Scale for Children and the measures of bonding behavior, suggesting that bonding behavior is not simply an artifact of sex role preference but an entity of its own

Nonplanar Push–Pull Chromophores for Opto-Electronic Applications

Donor-substituted cyanoethynylethenes (CEEs) are planar push–pull chromophores featuring intense intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) interactions and high third-order optical nonlinearities. Their thermal stability allows for the formation of crystalline thin films by vapor-phase deposition. On the other hand, high-quality amorphous thin films are preferred for opto-electronic applications and such films can be prepared using nonplanar push–pull chromophores with a less pronounced propensity to crystallize. By taking advantage of a versatile, atom-economic 'click-chemistry'-type transformation, involving a formal [2 + 2] cycloaddition of tetracyanoethene (TCNE) to electron-rich alkynes, followed by cycloreversion, stable donor-substituted 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobuta-1,3-dienes (TCBDs) are obtained in high yield and large quantities. These nonplanar push–pull chromophores also feature intense intramolecular CT and, in many cases, high third-order optical nonlinearities. Some of these compounds form high-optical-quality amorphous thin films by vapor-phase deposition, and first applications in next-generation opto-electronic devices have already been demonstrated. Chiral derivatives display high helical twisting power and are efficient dopants to translate molecular into macroscopic chirality, by switching nematic into cholesteric liquid crystalline phases

Perioperative latex hypersensitivity reactions: an integrative literature review

This article characterizes hypersensitivity reactions during anesthetic-surgical procedures. This integrative literature review was conducted in the LILACS, CINAHL, COCHRANE and MEDLINE databases including papers published from 1966 to September 2011. A total of 17 case reports, two prevalence studies and one cohort study were identified. Latex reactions were mainly type III and the primary source of intraoperative reaction was latex gloves. The average time for clinical manifestation was 59.8 minutes after anesthetic induction; 44.4% of patients reported a reaction to latex at the pre-anesthetic evaluation. It was determined that the history of allergic reactions to latex obtained in the pre-anesthetic evaluation does not ensure the safety of patients if the staff is inattentive to the severity of the issue. There is also a tendency to initially attribute the anaphylactic event to the anesthetic drugs
