    Inequalities in accessing LPG and electricity consumption in India : the role of caste, tribe, and religion

    Using the National Sample Survey Organisation data from the 68th round (2011–12) of 88,939 households, this paper investigates the inequalities in access to Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) and electricity usage by the households belonging to the three major disadvantaged groups in India, viz., the scheduled castes, the scheduled tribes, and the Muslims. The results of our analysis suggest that, after controlling for the other socio-economic factors which impinge on the households’ demand and supply characteristics, the households belonging to these disadvantaged groups do have poorer access to LPG and electricity usage as compared to the upper caste households. It is the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe households who would appear to face most discrimination in the equality spaces of the electricity usage and LPG distribution. The results strongly suggest that there are deep rooted cultural factors at play in the determination of the sex ratios at birth and at early ages, cultural factors that are not much responsive to the enhancement of women's agency or to economic development. However, the results also show that the behaviour of the juvenile sex ratio does respond to the enhancement of women's agency and to economic development.     Signals of Bose Einstein condensation and Fermi quenching in the decay of hot nuclear systems

    We report experimental signals of Bose-Einstein condensation in the decay of hot Ca projectile-like sources produced in mid-peripheral collisions at sub-Fermi energies. The experimental setup, constituted by the coupling of the INDRA 4π\pi detector array to the forward angle VAMOS magnetic spectrometer, allowed us to reconstruct the mass, charge and excitation energy of the decaying hot projectile-like sources. Furthermore, by means of quantum fluctuation analysis techniques, temperatures and mean volumes per particle "as seen by" bosons and fermions separately are correlated to the excitation energy of the reconstructed system. The obtained results are consistent with the production of dilute mixed (bosons/fermions) systems, where bosons experience a smaller volume as compared to the surrounding fermionic gas.     Particle motion in the field of a five-dimensional charged black hole

    In this paper, we have investigated the geodesics of neutral particles near a five-dimensional charged black hole using a comparative approach. The effective potential method is used to determine the location of the horizons and to study radial and circular trajectories. This also helps us to analyze the stability of radial and circular orbits. The radius of the innermost stable circular orbits have also been determined. Contrary to the case of massive particles for which, the circular orbits may have up to eight possible values of specific radius, we find that the photons will only have two distinct values for the specific radii of circular trajectories. Finally we have used the dynamical systems analysis to determine the critical points and the nature of the trajectories for the timelike and null geodesics.Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Scienc

    Velocity-force characteristics of an interface driven through a periodic potential

    We study the creep dynamics of a two-dimensional interface driven through a periodic potential using dynamical renormalization group methods. We find that the nature of weak-drive transport depends qualitatively on whether the temperature TT is above or below the equilibrium roughening transition temperature TcT_c. Above TcT_c, the velocity-force characteristics is Ohmic, with linear mobility exhibiting a jump discontinuity across the transition. For T≀TcT \le T_c, the transport is highly nonlinear, exhibiting an interesting crossover in temperature and weak external force FF. For intermediate drive, F>F∗F>F_*, we find near Tc−T_c^{-} a power-law velocity-force characteristics v(F)∌Fσv(F)\sim F^\sigma, with σ−1∝t~\sigma-1\propto \tilde{t}, and well-below TcT_c, v(F)∌e−(F∗/F)2t~v(F)\sim e^{-(F_*/F)^{2\tilde{t}}}, with t~=(1−T/Tc)\tilde{t}=(1-T/T_c). In the limit of vanishing drive (Fâ‰ȘF∗F\ll F_*) the velocity-force characteristics crosses over to v(F)∌e−(F0/F)v(F)\sim e^{-(F_0/F)}, and is controlled by soliton nucleation.Comment: 18 pages, submitted to Phys.     ‘It Takes Two Hands to Clap’: How Gaddi Shepherds in the Indian Himalayas Negotiate Access to Grazing

    This article examines the effects of state intervention on the workings of informal institutions that coordinate the communal use and management of natural resources. Specifically it focuses on the case of the nomadic Gaddi shepherds and official attempts to regulate their access to grazing pastures in the Indian Himalayas. It is often predicted that the increased presence of the modern state critically undermines locally appropriate and community-based resource management arrangements. Drawing on the work of Pauline Peters and Francis Cleaver, I identify key instances of socially embedded ‘common’ management institutions and explain the evolution of these arrangements through dynamic interactions between individuals, communities and the agents of the state. Through describing the ‘living space’ of Gaddi shepherds across the annual cycle of nomadic migration with their flocks I explore the ways in which they have been able to creatively reinterpret external interventions, and suggest how contemporary arrangements for accessing pasture at different moments of the annual cycle involve complex combinations of the formal and the informal, the ‘traditional’ and the ‘modern’

    Anisotropic Scaling in Threshold Critical Dynamics of Driven Directed Lines

    The dynamical critical behavior of a single directed line driven in a random medium near the depinning threshold is studied both analytically (by renormalization group) and numerically, in the context of a Flux Line in a Type-II superconductor with a bulk current J⃗\vec J. In the absence of transverse fluctuations, the system reduces to recently studied models of interface depinning. In most cases, the presence of transverse fluctuations are found not to influence the critical exponents that describe longitudinal correlations. For a manifold with d=4−ϔd=4-\epsilon internal dimensions, longitudinal fluctuations in an isotropic medium are described by a roughness exponent ζ∄=Ï”/3\zeta_\parallel=\epsilon/3 to all orders in Ï”\epsilon, and a dynamical exponent z∄=2−2Ï”/9+O(Ï”2)z_\parallel=2-2\epsilon/9+O(\epsilon^2). Transverse fluctuations have a distinct and smaller roughness exponent ζ⊄=ζ∄−d/2\zeta_\perp=\zeta_\parallel-d/2 for an isotropic medium. Furthermore, their relaxation is much slower, characterized by a dynamical exponent z⊄=z∄+1/Îœz_\perp=z_\parallel+1/\nu, where Îœ=1/(2−ζ∄)\nu=1/(2-\zeta_\parallel) is the correlation length exponent. The predicted exponents agree well with numerical results for a flux line in three dimensions. As in the case of interface depinning models, anisotropy leads to additional universality classes.     Weak Field Black Hole Formation in Asymptotically AdS Spacetimes

    We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study the thermalization of a strongly coupled conformal field theory that is forced out of its vacuum by a source that couples to a marginal operator. The source is taken to be of small amplitude and finite duration, but is otherwise an arbitrary function of time. When the field theory lives on Rd−1,1R^{d-1,1}, the source sets up a translationally invariant wave in the dual gravitational description. This wave propagates radially inwards in AdSd+1AdS_{d+1} space and collapses to form a black brane. Outside its horizon the bulk spacetime for this collapse process may systematically be constructed in an expansion in the amplitude of the source function, and takes the Vaidya form at leading order in the source amplitude. This solution is dual to a remarkably rapid and intriguingly scale dependent thermalization process in the field theory. When the field theory lives on a sphere the resultant wave either slowly scatters into a thermal gas (dual to a glueball type phase in the boundary theory) or rapidly collapses into a black hole (dual to a plasma type phase in the field theory) depending on the time scale and amplitude of the source function.     Existence of continuous eigenvalues for a class of parametric problems involving the (p,2)-laplacian operator

    We discuss a parametric eigenvalue problem, where the differential operator is of (p,2)-Laplacian type. We show that, when p≠2, the spectrum of the operator is a half line, with the end point formulated in terms of the parameter and the principal eigenvalue of the Laplacian with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions.
