Chimpanzee feeding behaviour at Caiquene-Cadique in Cantanez National Park, Guinea-Bissau
Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, sharing some behaviours once thought unique to
humans. Much is known about chimpanzee behaviour and socio-ecology, but we have a very
limited understanding of how they adapt their behaviour to the costs and benefits of
inhabiting human-influenced habitats. This dissertation presents the first data on the feeding
ecology of the most westerly community of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) studied to
date, in the forest-savannah-mangrove-farm mosaic of Caiquene-Cadique, Cantanhez
National Park, Guinea-Bissau. The main aim of this research was to better understand
temporal variations in chimpanzee feeding behaviour, including identification of food species
consumed, and relate it to the seasonal availability of plant foods. A combination of data
collection methods were employed during the 9-month field study: indirect recording (faecal
samples and feeding traces), direct opportunistic observations of chimpanzees, and phenology
quadrats. The Caiquene-Cadique chimpanzees experienced marked seasonal variations in the
availability of plant foods, but maintained a high proportion of ripe fruit in the diet across
months. In addition to fruits, they also ingest a variety of other plant parts, including leaves,
piths, flowers, bark and sap. Chimpanzees at Caiquene-Cadique regularly consumed cultivars,
including cashew, mango and orange, which represent 13,4% of all consumed species. Honey
is frequently consumed, and was obtained from both natural and man-made beehives. There
was no evidence of hunting or meat consumption, even though preferred prey species were
available, and evidence for the consumption of social insects, such as termites or ants, was not
found. However, there was indirect evidence of possible smashing and consumption of giant
African snails (Achatina sp.). An episode of plant food-sharing (Treculia africana) was also
recorded, supporting the theory that large, easily divisible plants are more commonly shared
among apes than smaller, less easily divisible foods. The clearing of forestland for slash-andburn
cultivation is constant, and constitutes a significant threat to survival of this and other
chimpanzee communities within the Park. Although ‘conflicts’ over access to space and
resources appear uncommon, it is likely they will become more frequent with increasing
human populations and encroachment.
Sabemos hoje bastante acerca do
chimpanzés do Parque.
Inter-community behavioural variation confirmed through indirect methods in four neighbouring chimpanzee communities in Cantanhez NP, Guinea-Bissau
UIDB/04038/2020 UIDP/04038/2020Culture, while long viewed as exclusively human, has now been demonstrated across diverse taxa and contexts. However, most animal culture data are constrained to well-studied, habituated groups. This is the case for chimpanzees, arguably the most ‘cultural’ non-human species. While much progress has been made charting wild chimpanzees' cultural repertoire, large gaps remain in our knowledge of the majority of the continent's chimpanzees. Furthermore, few studies have compared neighbouring communities, despite such comparisons providing the strongest evidence for culture, and few have studied communities living in anthropogenic habitats although their culture is in imminent danger of disappearing. Here we combine direct, indirect and remote methods, including camera traps, to study, over 2 years, four unhabituated neighbouring chimpanzee communities inhabiting human-impacted habitats in Cantanhez NP, Guinea-Bissau. From traces collected during 1089 km of reconnaissance walks and 4197 videos from 56 camera trap locations, we identified 18 putative cultural traits. These included some noteworthy novel behaviours for these communities, and behaviours possibly new to the species. We created preliminary behavioural profiles for each community, and found inter-community differences spanning tool use, communication, and social behaviour, demonstrating the importance of comparing neighbouring communities and of studying previously neglected communities including those inhabiting anthropogenic landscapes.publishersversionpublishe
Burnout and job demand and resources among game developers
Tal implica conseguir gerir e equilibrar as
e utilidade social do trabalho.
51% do desinvestimento.
As dificuldades parecem
Embora a maioria faça
lado, limitam, constrangem e reprimem as ações destas mulheres, aumentando assim a
In a world in progressive movement, with increasingly diverse societies, the number of
women living their motherhood in a multicultural and migration context is a recognized reality
both at global and national levels. However, there’s little knowledge about the quality and
effectiveness of the access of immigrant to the national health care system especially regarding
immigrant women living in Portugal (Fonseca, Silva, McGarrigle & Esteves, 2007).
Studies suggest that migrant women face huge challenges related with the accessibility to
health care matters. These difficulties seem to intensify during pregnancy and maternity periods
because the vulnerability to diseases and risk to women and their descendants increases.
Taking this into account, this paper aims to analyze and characterize the maternal and
child healthcare provided to the immigrant population resident in Portugal. Based on theoretical
and epistemological critical assumptions given by social constructionism, this qualitative research
is divided into two empirical studies. The study 1, intended to characterize (look for the common
features in) the speeches, perceptions and experiences of thirty Capeverdean, Brazilian and
Ukrainian women about the maternal and child health care services in Portugal. Study 2,
intended to contribute to a better understanding of the access and responsiveness of the national
health care system and its professionals towards regnant immigrant women living in Portugal as
well as to characterize the speeches of fourteen health professionals about the specific care
procedures provided to immigrant women during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum periods.
In study 1, a thematic analysis was conducted and two themes could be identified-
Movements in the Diaspora and Maternal health care: facilities and constraints - whose in-depth
analysis was helped by the critical analysis of the discourse (Willig, 2003, 2008). The results
show, that the search of healthcare services for monitoring pregnancies are generally delayed.
Personal experiences in different social contexts (e.g., experiences of discrimination) as well as
the multiple and different obstacles encountered (e.g., cultural, informational, economic,
communication, bureaucratic, familiar) when accessing or attempting to access services seem to
be an important contribution. Most of the women made a positive assessment of the care
services received but they all warn about the professionals’ insensitivity to cultural diversity and
constant discrimination actions performed, which seems to appear in different shapes and related with their identity characteristics. Given the difficulties experienced and the speeches with
which they contact, these women nurture a sense of themselves as people with fewer rights and
this seems to lead them to comply with Western practices of care and to silence themselves
about the discriminatory practices experienced. The results indicate that the individual strategies
used do not constitute any threat to the hegemonic group and contribute to the maintenance of
the status quo (Lewin, 1948/1997) and inequalities.
In study 2, the thematic/theme analysis conducted identified one central subject-
Knowledge, constraints and practices in relation to health care in pregnant immigrant population.
Once again, the reflection about this matter was performed in accordance with the critical
discourse analysis. In this study, the results point out the existence of several barriers to the
immigrants’ access of primary health care services. The professionals’ lack of knowledge about
legislation, the lack of management infrastructure capable of responding to different needs,
particularly in relation to providing a technician to follow each woman for a long period, the time
constrainments in the medical consultations as well as the language and communication barriers
appear to contribute to this scenario. Moreover, the results show that professionals’ discourses
are hegemonic discourses and lead to a regulation of immigrants’ knowledge in favor of western
biomedical understandings.
Thus, the evidences in this research highlight the presence of power asymmetries in the
relations established in the maternal and child care services. If, on the one hand, these relations
have the duty to protect women ensuring them a better well-being and prevention of future
problems, on the other hand, limit, constrain and restrain the actions of these women while
increasing the vulnerability to which they are subjected during pregnancy and postpartum
periods

Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines Trigger the Overexpression of Tumour-Related Splice Variant RAC1B in Polarized Colorectal Cells
Simple Summary: Tumours are now known to develop more quickly when the tumour cell mass is located in a tissue that shows signs of chronic inflammation. Under such conditions, inflammatory cells from the surrounding tumour microenvironment provide survival signals to which cancer cells respond. We have previously found that some colorectal tumours overexpress the protein RAC1B that sustains tumour cell survival. Here we used a colon mucosa-like in vitro cell model and found that the presence of cancer-associated fibroblasts and pro-inflammatory macrophages stimulated colorectal cells to increase their RAC1B levels. Under these conditions, the secreted survival signals were analysed, and interleukin-6 identified as the main trigger for the increase in RAC1B levels. The results contribute to understand the tumour-promoting effect of inflammation at the molecular level.Abstract: An inflammatory microenvironment is a tumour-promoting condition that provides survival signals to which cancer cells respond with gene expression changes. One example is the alternative splicing variant Rat Sarcoma Viral Oncogene Homolog (Ras)-Related C3 Botulinum Toxin Substrate 1 (RAC1)B, which we previously identified in a subset of V-Raf Murine Sarcoma Viral Oncogene Homolog B (BRAF)-mutated colorectal tumours. RAC1B was also increased in samples from inflammatory bowel disease patients or in an acute colitis mouse model. Here, we used an epithelial-like layer of polarized Caco-2 or T84 colorectal cancer (CRC) cells in co-culture with fibroblasts, monocytes or macrophages and analysed the effect on RAC1B expression in the CRC cells by RT-PCR, Western blot and confocal fluorescence microscopy. We found that the presence of cancer-associated fibroblasts and M1 macrophages induced the most significant increase in RAC1B levels in the polarized CRC cells, accompanied by a progressive loss of epithelial organization. Under these conditions, we identified interleukin (IL)-6 as the main trigger for the increase in RAC1B levels, associated with Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT)3 activation. IL-6 neutralization by a specific antibody abrogated both RAC1B overexpression and STAT3 phosphorylation in polarized CRC cells. Our data identify that pro-inflammatory extracellular signals from stromal cells can trigger the overexpression of tumour-related RAC1B in polarized CRC cells. The results will help to understand the tumour-promoting effect of inflammation and identify novel therapeutic strategies.Work in the authors’ laboratory was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) (through grant UID/MULTI/04046/2019 to Research Unit BioISI, grant PTDC/BIA-MOL/28386/2017, and fellowship BD/109162/2015 to J.F.S.P.) and by the Portuguese association of the intestinal inflammatory disease (grant GEDII 2013 to P.J.).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Implications for the Management of Complex Social-Ecological Systems
UIDB/04038/2020 UIDP/04038/2020 IF/01128/2014 PTDC/CS-ANT/121124/2010 CRIA/04038/BPD/DASEUnderstanding the capacity for humans to share resources (crops, wild foods, space) with large-bodied wildlife is vital for biodiversity conservation and human wellbeing, and requires comprehensive examination of their temporal interactions over fine spatial scales. We combined ecological (plant identification, wild fruit availability plots, animal fecal and trace sampling) and social science (free-listing, semi-structured interviews, participant observation) methods to systematically and simultaneously collect data on the availability and selection of fruits from wild plants by humans and critically endangered chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus), a national conservation flagship species at Cantanhez National Park, Guinea-Bissau. Within an area of 12.7 km2, we demonstrate that local people’s monthly use of wild fruits was driven by its overall availability in the habitat, whereas chimpanzees, as ripe fruit specialists, sought out fruits year-round. Humans and chimpanzees overlap in the selection of fruits from at least 27 wild plant species. The ranked use of fruits from species which were used by both chimpanzees and humans was significantly positively correlated, suggesting they preferentially target fruits of the same wild plant species. Each month, humans and chimpanzees selected three to six of the same wild fruit species. Chimpanzees fed significantly more on wild fruit species that were available for longer periods, with no effect of that plant species density. Neither plant density nor number of fruiting months impacted human selection of fruit from a plant species, suggesting people might seek out desired resources irrespective of a species’ abundance in the landscape. These findings are important for the development of a shared knowledge base to establish culturally relevant conservation management strategies. We recommend the active management of plant species that are exploited for their fruits by both humans and chimpanzees at Cantanhez National Park, including figs (Ficus spp.), oil-palm (Elaeis guineensis) and velvet tamarind (Dialium guineense). This can be achieved through supporting traditional resource management practices and the strategic replanting of shared plants in deforested areas and degraded corridors between forest fragments. This situation is representative of human-chimpanzee coexistence scenarios found across West Africa; the importance of shared resource use should be incorporated into local, national and regional conservation strategies.publishersversionpublishe
