    Petrology and geochemistry of the back-arc lithospheric mantle beneath eastern Payunia (La Pampa, Argentina): evidence from Agua Poca peridotite xenoliths

    This paper presents the results of new petrochemical studies carried out on mantle xenoliths hosted in Pleistocene basaltic rocks from the Agua Poca volcano in central-western Argentina. Mantle xenoliths studied are shown to be mainly anhydrous spinel lherzolites with minor amounts of harzburgite and banded pyroxenite, showing highly variable equilibrium temperatures ranging from 820°C to 1030°C at 1.0 to 2.0 GPa. This constitutes evidence that the mantle xenoliths are representative of a large portion of the lithospheric mantle column and that the geothermal gradient is not very elevated as reported in some other Patagonian provinces. Geochemical characteristics of clinopyroxene in the mantle xenoliths allow classification into two groups; Groups 1 and 2. Group 1 contains most of the lherzolites and has light-REE depletion, with slightly positive anomalies of Eu in some samples and extreme Nb and Ta depletion. Group 2 consists of two harzburgitic samples, has flat REE patterns with lower Sm to Lu concentrations, with enriched Sr and negative HFSE anomalies. Based on mineral and residua compositions estimated assuming equilibrium with clinopyroxenes, Group 1 can be considered to be refractory residua after up to 7%, non-modal, near-fractional melting of a spinel-facies Primitive Mantle. Group 2 can be considered to be after ca. 13% of partial melting. It is inferred that partial melting events in the lithospheric mantle beneath the Agua Poca occurred in different ages since the Proterozoic, but compared with Group 1, the metasomatic overprint is dominant in Group 2 mantle xenoliths. The calculated melt compositions from Group 2 are interpreted to be transient liquid compositions developed during melt-peridotite interaction, and are different from the host alkaline basalts. The HFSE-depleted composition estimated for the rising melt suggests the presence of a slab-derived component, although the possibility cannot be disregarded (on the basis of present data) that such a geochemical feature is due to segregation of HFSE-bearing minerals during the interaction with the peridotite.     Aspects of Reproductive Biology of the European Hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Northern and Central Adriatic Sea (GSA 17-Central Mediterranean Sea)

    The study focused on the macroscopic, histological, and biometric analysis of European hake females in GSA 17 (Central-North Adriatic Sea). From 2013 to 2015, 976 females were collected and analyzed monthly. Though females in spawning conditions were found during the whole year, the trend of GSI showed a peak of the reproductive season from April to July in 2014 and 2015. HSI and Kn reached the highest values in September, after the spawning peaks. In 2013, the trend of these indices did not highlight an evident peak, probably due to an adverse event that occurred in the previous winter in the Adriatic shelf. The length at first maturity (L50) was estimated by macroscopic and histological approaches, resulting in 30.81 cm for the macroscopical length and 33.73 cm for the histological length; both values are higher than the current catching legal size. For the first time in this area, batch and relative fecundity were estimated. Relative fecundity was similar to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic stocks, whereas batch fecundity values were lower compared to other fishing grounds. Overall, the analysis of reproductive parameters plays a fundamental role in the sustainable management of this resource in an area as overfished as the Central-North Adriatic Sea

    Geochemical variations in Cenozoic back-arc basalts at the border of La Pampa and Mendoza provinces, Argentina

    Back-arc volcanism was active in central-western Argentina (provinces of Mendoza and La Pampa) from the Miocene through historic times. The rocks of 39 monogenetic volcanoes located in this area were studied in order to define their geochemical characteristics. The dominant rock texture is porphyritic, with intergranular, pilotaxitic and hyalophitic groundmasses. The most frequent phenocrysts are olivine followed by olivine–plagioclase–clinopyroxene. Their SiO2 content varies between 42.3 and 51.2 wt.%, the most abundant rocks are trachybasalts, followed by basalts and basanites, all of them alkaline. The rocks display enrichment of incompatible elements that varies according to the geographic location and age. There is an increase in incompatible element concentrations from the southern and central to the northern zones. Also, in the northern part of the study area, the behavior of incompatible elements varies with time; the incompatible element ratios of the Plio–Pleistocene rocks show arc signature, while the rocks of the Miocene De la Laguna volcano show intraplate affinity. We conclude for this sector that the mantle source region was modified after the generation of Miocene magmas by subduction-related fluids.     Performance of a fully automatic lesion detection system for breast DCE-MRI

    PURPOSE: To describe and test a new fully automatic lesion detection system for breast DCE-MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Studies were collected from two institutions adopting different DCE-MRI sequences, one with and the other one without fat-saturation. The detection pipeline consists of (i) breast segmentation, to identify breast size and location; (ii) registration, to correct for patient movements; (iii) lesion detection, to extract contrast-enhanced regions using a new normalization technique based on the contrast-uptake of mammary vessels; (iv) false positive (FP) reduction, to exclude contrast-enhanced regions other than lesions. Detection rate (number of system-detected malignant and benign lesions over the total number of lesions) and sensitivity (system-detected malignant lesions over the total number of malignant lesions) were assessed. The number of FPs was also assessed. RESULTS: Forty-eight studies with 12 benign and 53 malignant lesions were evaluated. Median lesion diameter was 6 mm (range, 5-15 mm) for benign and 26 mm (range, 5-75 mm) for malignant lesions. Detection rate was 58/65 (89%; 95% confidence interval [CI] 79%-95%) and sensitivity was 52/53 (98%; 95% CI 90%-99%). Mammary median FPs per breast was 4 (1st-3rd quartiles 3-7.25). CONCLUSION: The system showed promising results on MR datasets obtained from different scanners producing fat-sat or non-fat-sat images with variable temporal and spatial resolution and could potentially be used for early diagnosis and staging of breast cancer to reduce reading time and to improve lesion detection. Further evaluation is needed before it may be used in clinical practice

    Mantle Xenoliths from Huanul Volcano (Central-West Argentina): A Poorly Depleted Mantle Source under Southern Payenia

    Huanul is a shield volcano with several lava flows hosting mantle xenoliths erupted during the Pleistocene (0.84 ± 0.05 Ma). It is located in the southern part of the Payenia Volcanic Province, which is among the largest Neogene-Quaternary volcanic provinces of South America. The vol-canism here has been ascribed as the northernmost expression of the back-arc volcanism of the Andean Southern Volcanic Zone. We present the first petrographic and mineral chemistry study of mantle xenoliths collected from Huanul lavas with the aim of reconstructing directly the mantle source of the Payenia Volcanic Province. Xenoliths are commonly small (<5 cm in radius) but scarcely crossed by basaltic veins. All xenoliths have a fertile lherzolitic modal composition and are equilibrated in the spinel-facies. Most of them exhibit an almost primitive-mantle geochemical affinity, characterized by slightly depleted clinopyroxene REE patterns reproducible by partial melting degrees between 0 and 4% of a PM source. Geothermobarometric P-T estimates of cli-nopyroxene-orthopyroxene couples form a linear trend between 10 and 24 kbar with constant increase of T from 814 to 1170 °C along a 50–60 mW/m2 geotherm. Evidences of interaction with the host basalts occur as spongy textures in clinopyroxene and reacted spinel, which tend to became more restitic in composition and show chromatographic or complete overprinting of the trace element compositions. The presence of plagioclase and calculated P-T values constrain this melt/rock reaction process between 6 and 14 kbar, during magma ascent, and fit the mantle ad-iabat model. Calculated melts in equilibrium with the primary clinopyroxenes do not fit the composition of the host basalt and, together with the geothermobarometric estimations, point to an asthenospheric mantle source for the magmatism in southern Payenia. The PM geochemical affinity of the xenoliths of Huanul is an extremely rare finding in the South America lithospheric mantle, which is commonly extensively refertilized by subduction-derived melts

    Short-scale variability of the SCLM beneath the extra-Andean back-arc (Paso de Indios, Argentina): Evidence from spinel-facies mantle xenoliths

    Cenozoic basalts carrying ultramafic mantle xenoliths occur in the Matilde, León and Chenque hills in the Paso de Indios region, Argentina. The mantle xenoliths from the Chenque and León hills mainly present porphyroclastic textures, whereas the Matilde hill xenoliths have coarse-grained to porphyroclastic textures. The equilibrium temperatures are in the range of 780 to 940°C, indicating a provenance from shallow sectors of the lithospheric mantle column that were subjected to a relatively low heat flux at Cenozoic Era. According to the modal compositions of xenoliths, the mantle beneath Matilde and León hills was affected by greater than 22% partial melting, while less depleted peridotites occur in the Chenque suite (starting from 10% partial melting). Such an observation is con rmed by the partial melting estimates based on Cr#Sp, which vary from 8 to 14% for the selected Chenque samples and from 14 to 18% for the Matilde ones. The common melting trend is overlapped by small-scale cross cutting local trends that may have been generated by open-system processes, such as open-system partial melting and/or post partial-melting metasomatic migration of exotic Na-Cr-rich melts. The two main mineralogical reaction schemes are: i) the dissolution of pyroxenes and the segregation of new olivine in olivine-rich peridotites, and ii) the replacement of primary olivine by orthopyroxene±clinopyroxene in orthopyroxene-rich peridotites. These were produced by channelled and/or pervasive melt extraction/ migration. Enhanced pyroxene dissolution is attributed to channelling of silica- undersaturated melts, whereas the replacement of primary olivine by orthopyroxene±clinopyroxene points to reaction with silica-saturated melts. Late disequilibrium reactions identified in the xenoliths comprise: the breakdown of orthopyroxene in contact with the host basalt, and (rarely) reaction coronae on orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel linked to glassy veins. Such features are apparently related to the injection of melt, likely during entrainment into the host basalts and ascent to the surface.Centro de Investigaciones Geológica

    Neste trabalho é proposta uma biblioteca de classes para sistemas de manufatura que visa facilitar a construção de modelos de simulação, permitindo o reuso e a agilizando a modelagaem. A principal característica deste trabalho é sua abordagem que difere da maioria dos trabalhos correlatos na área. Ela baseia-se na utilização de conceitos de produção bastante conhecidos atualemnte, como os roteiros e atividades de produção. Isto permite a criação de novas simulações muito mais rapidamente do que em outras metodologias, já que não são necessárias traduções compelxas entre a realidade e as aplicações simuladas. A biblioteca desenvolvida foi validade com a aplicação dos conceitos à modelagem de uma linha de produção de pontas de eixo para tratores, produzidos pela empresa Pigozzi S/A. ALém disso, o trabalho discute a possibilidade de integração entre a biblioteca de classes proposta e a ferramente de simulação de sistemas de manufatura Automod. A simulação do estudo de caso da linha de produção de pontas de eixo, modelada tanto no Automod quanto na biblioteca de classes proposta, permitiu uma comparação quantitativa, o que viabilizou a validação este trabalho
