    Monitoring inland waters with the APEX sensor, a wavelet approach

    In this study a new curve fitting approach is presented to derive TSM, CHL and CDOM concentrations in inland and coastal waters from water leaving-reflectance spectra. The approach is based on the wavelet transform and is tested on simulated water-leaving reflectance spectra. For simulations SIOPS and water concentrations, representative for the Scheldt river, were used. The results shown that the approach is less sensitive to errors in the atmospheric correction or specific sensor noise. The idea is based on the development of a new minimization criteria for curve fitting. Instead of minimizing the difference between modeled and measured spectra using a simple RMSE, the RMSE is now combined with specific wavelet features. Several types of errors and noise are added to the simulated spectra to find robust features. Two minimization criteria were found which are almost insensitive to a white error and less sensitive to adjacency effects

    Classifying hyperspectral airborne imagery for vegetation survey along coastlines

    This paper studies the potential of airborne hyperspectral imagery for classifying vegetation along the Belgian coastlines. Here, the aim is to build vegetation maps using automatic classification. Besides a general linear multiclass classifier (Linear Discriminant Analysis), several strategies for combining binary classifiers are proposed: one based on a hierarchical decision tree, one based on the Hamming distance between the codewords obtained by binary classifiers and one based on the coupling of posterior probabilities. In addition, a new procedure is proposed for spatial classification smoothing. This procedure takes into account spatial information by letting the decision for classification of a pixel depend on the classification probabilities of neighboring pixels. This is shown to render smoother classification images

    Cultural molding, shielding, and shoring at Oilco: the role of culture in the integration of routines

    We explore how organizational culture shapes an organization’s integration and enactment of an external routine that is not a cultural fit. Attending to employees’ use of culture as a repertoire of strategies of action, we found that the use of familiar cultural strategies of action shaped the routine’s artifacts and expectations even before it was performed, a process we call cultural molding. Subsequently, employees drew differently on cultural strategies of action as they performed the routine, generating patterns of workarounds or hindered performances. In response to these patterns, they undertook additional cultural work to either shield their workarounds and protect them from scrutiny or shore up hindered performances. We contribute to the routine dynamics literature by highlighting the effortful cultural work involved in integrating coveted routines, furthering our understanding of routines as truces and the embeddedness of routines.Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada [Grant 430-2012-195

    Optimal schedule of home care visits for a health care center

    The provision of home health care services is becoming an important research area, mainly because in Portugal the population is ageing. Home care visits are organized taking into account the medical treatments and general support that elder/sick people need at home. This health service can be provided by nurse teams from Health Care Centers. Usually, the visits are manually planned and without computer support. The main goal of this work is to carry out the automatic schedule of home care visits, of one Portuguese Health Care Center, in order to minimize the time spent in all home care visits and, consequently, reduce the costs involved. The developed algorithms were coded in MatLab Software and the problem was efficiently solved, obtaining several schedule solutions of home care visits for the presented data.     Rapid detection of snakes modulates spatial orienting in infancy

    Recent evidence for an evolved fear module in the brain comes from studies showing that adults, children and infants detect evolutionarily threatening stimuli such as snakes faster than non-threatening ones. A decisive argument for a threat detection system efficient early in life would come from data showing, in young infants, a functional threat-detection mechanism in terms of “what” and “where” visual pathways. The present study used a variant of Posner’s cuing paradigm, adapted to 7–11-month-olds. On each trial, a threat-irrelevant or a threat-relevant cue was presented (a flower or a snake, i.e., “what”). We measured how fast infants detected these cues and the extent to which they further influenced the spatial allocation of attention (“where”). In line with previous findings, we observed that infants oriented faster towards snake than flower cues. Importantly, a facilitation effect was found at the cued location for flowers but not for snakes, suggesting that these latter cues elicit a broadening of attention and arguing in favour of sophisticated “what–where” connections. These results strongly support the claim that humans have an early propensity to detect evolutionarily threat-relevant stimuli

    Entre la vie et la mort: le changement organisationnel dans les bureaucraties de l’État central dans une perspective comparative transnationale

    Identifier et expliquer les changements dans la structure des bureaucraties de l’État central et les déterminants de la survie des organisations publiques individuelles sont deux domaines de recherche étroitement liés dans l’administration publique. Nous cherchons à combler le fossé entre ces deux principaux courants d’études du changement organisationnel en présentant une nouvelle approche de la collecte de données sur l’historique des événements pour les organisations publiques. Nous avons développé ce cadre dans le cadre du projet « Structure et organisation des gouvernements », qui vise à cartographier l’ensemble des bureaucraties de l’État central dans trois pays d’Europe occidentale. Notre approche est suffisamment flexible pour décrire les macro-tendances des populations d’organisations du secteur public et pour expliquer ces tendances en analysant l’histoire des événements des organisations qu’elles comprennent. En plus de présenter notre cadre et la manière dont nous l’avons appliqué pour créer cet ensemble de données, nous présentons également quelques premières comparaisons transnationales de la répartition des types d’événements enregistrés, et soulignons les premiers résultats et les pistes prometteuses pour des recherches ultérieures.NWOORA 464-13-113The politics and administration of institutional changeSecurity and Global Affair
