    The nucleotide sequence of a human immnnoglobulin C-gamma-1 gene

    We report the nucleotide sequence of a gene encoding the constant region of a human immnnoglobulin Ī³1 heavy chain (CĪ³1). A comparison of this sequence with those of the CĪ³2 and CĪ³4 genes reveals that these three human CĪ³ genes share considerable homology in both coding and noncoding regions. The nucleotide sequence differences indicate that these genes diverged from one another approximately 6ā€“8 million years ago. An examination of hinge exons shows that these coding regions have evolved more rapidly than any other areas of the CĪ³ genes in terms of both base substitution and deletionā€“insertion events.     Capgras\u27 Syndrome

    Capgras\u27 Syndrome, the delusion of doubles, is a rare delusional phenomenon in which a person believes that identical doubles have replaced significant people in his life and/or that there exist identical doubles of himself. These delusional doubles are almost always believed to be malevolent. The delusion occurs in a variety of psychotic states, usually schizophrenia. It occurs in both women and men in a wide age range. This dissertation reviews early French reports by Capgras and his associates as well as over 100 cases reported in English. Previous efforts to explain the Syndrome have stressed both organic and psychodynamic factors. The Syndrome has been observed with many organic conditions, but the allegation of doubles is selective, the problem is not misrecognition but belief, thus psychodynamic factors must be significant. Psychodynamic explanations have emphasized four major themes: Oedipal problems in women, feelings of strangeness, intolerble ambivalence, and pathological splitting. An approach to the delusion based on object relations theory seems most comprehensive, because it is the manner in which images of self and others are internalized that appears to underlie the delusion. For Capgras\u27 Syndrome to develop there must be paranoid characteristics, a psychotic state, and, I suggest, severe disturbances in early internalized object relations. The case presented here illustrates the application of an object relations approach to the history of a 32 year old woman who believed that her mother, uncle, and cousin (her only living relatives) had been replaced by doubles and that there were two doubles of herself. This woman experienced inadequate mothering in infancy, became an isolated and aloof adolescent, and suffered the onset of a schizophrenic illness in her mid-twenties, just after completion of medical school. Capgras\u27 Syndrome is a frightening yet uncannily familiar phenomenon. The idea of doubles has long had a place in human religion and literature, and to make the Syndrome more comprehensible and thus more treatable it is appropriate to examine the use of the idea of doubles in fiction. It is also useful to build a continuum from the psychotic delusion of doubles through the neurotic family romance toward a recognition of similar dynamics in normal life

    Role of shear stress in endothelial cell morphology and expression of cyclooxygenase isoforms

    MEDLINEĀ® is the source for the MeSH terms of this document.Objective-: The goal of this study was to examine the effect of chronic heterogeneous shear stress, applied using an orbital shaker, on endothelial cell morphology and the expression of cyclooxygenases 1 and 2. Methods and results-: Porcine aortic endothelial cells were plated on fibronectin-coated Transwell plates. Cells were cultured for up to 7 days either under static conditions or on an orbital shaker that generated a wave of medium inducing shear stress over the cells. Cells were fixed and stained for the endothelial surface marker CD31 or cyclooxygenases 1 and 2. En face confocal microscopy and scanning ion conductance microscopy were used to show that endothelial cells were randomly oriented at the center of the well, aligned with shear stress nearer the periphery, and expressed cyclooxygenase-1 under all conditions. Lipopolysaccharide induced cyclooxygenase-2 and the production of 6-keto-prostaglandin F1Ī± in all cells. Conclusion-: Cyclooxygenase-1 is expressed in endothelial cells cultured under chronic shear stress of high or low directionality.Peer reviewedSubmitted Versio

    Strongly residual coordinates over A[x]

    For a domain A of characteristic zero, a polynomial f over A[x] is called a strongly residual coordinate if f becomes a coordinate (over A) upon going modulo x, and f becomes a coordinate upon inverting x. We study the question of when a strongly residual coordinate is a coordinate, a question closely related to the Dolgachev-Weisfeiler conjecture. It is known that all strongly residual coordinates are coordinates for n=2 . We show that a large class of strongly residual coordinates that are generated by elementaries upon inverting x are in fact coordinates for arbitrary n, with a stronger result in the n=3 case.     Using Touch Technology to Foster Storytelling in the Preschool Classroom

    This practitioner research explores ways children engage in literacy learning through storytelling with the use of touch technology in a VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) classroom. With access to diverse touch technology devices but no experience using these technologies, a VPK teacher explored strategies to use the resources to enhance literacy learning in the classroom with the support of a professional learning community (PLC). The PLC consisted of a masterā€™s student, university faculty, school director, and a technology liaison. The implementation of this study took place over three weeks, and every week children created a different story. Collected data include photographs, student voice recordings, anecdotal notes, and a reflective journal. The three weeks of implementation data showed how touch technology provided a new modality of learning representation for young children in my classroom. The findings suggest that multiliteracies complemented traditional literacy, storytelling enhanced childrenā€™s communication, and touch technology functionality went beyond literacy skills

    Phase Identification of Smart Meters Using a Fourier Series Compression and a Statistical Clustering Algorithm

    Accurate labeling of phase connectivity in electrical distribution systems is important for maintenance and operations but is often erroneous or missing. In this paper, we present a process to identify which smart meters must be in the same phase using a hierarchical clustering method on voltage time series data. Instead of working with the time series data directly, we apply the Fourier transform to represent the data in their frequency domain, remove 98%98\% of the Fourier coefficients, and use the remaining coefficients to cluster the meters are in the same phase. Result of this process is validated by confirming that cluster (phase) membership of meters does not change over two monthly periods. In addition, we also confirm that meters that belong to the same feeder within the distribution network are correctly classified into the same cluster, that is, assigned to the same phase.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, 4 table

    Intraretinal signaling by ganglion cell photoreceptors to dopaminergic amacrine neurons

    Retinal dopaminergic amacrine neurons (DA neurons) play a central role in reconfiguring retinal function according to prevailing illumination conditions, yet the mechanisms by which light regulates their activity are poorly understood. We investigated the means by which sustained light responses are evoked in DA neurons. Sustained light responses were driven by cationic currents and persisted in vitro and in vivo in the presence of L-AP4, a blocker of retinal ON-bipolar cells. Several characteristics of these L-AP4-resistant light responses suggested that they were driven by melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), including long latencies, marked poststimulus persistence, and a peak spectral sensitivity of 478 nm. Furthermore, sustained DA neuron light responses, but not transient DA neuron responses, persisted in rod/cone degenerate retinas, in which ipRGCs account for virtually all remaining retinal phototransduction. Thus, ganglion-cell photoreceptors provide excitatory drive to DA neurons, most likely by way of the coramification of their dendrites and the processes of DA neurons in the inner plexiform layer.     Enhanced inverse bremsstrahlung heating rates in a strong laser field

    Test particle studies of electron scattering on ions, in an oscillatory electromagnetic field have shown that standard theoretical assumptions of small angle collisions and phase independent orbits are incorrect for electron trajectories with drift velocities smaller than quiver velocity amplitude. This leads to significant enhancement of the electron energy gain and the inverse bremsstrahlung heating rate in strong laser fields. Nonlinear processes such as Coulomb focusing and correlated collisions of electrons being brought back to the same ion by the oscillatory field are responsible for large angle, head-on scattering processes. The statistical importance of these trajectories has been examined for mono-energetic beam-like, Maxwellian and highly anisotropic electron distribution functions. A new scaling of the inverse bremsstrahlung heating rate with drift velocity and laser intensity is discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure
