Brexit and the ‘Imperial Factor’:A longue durée Approach to British Exceptionalism
To what extent can we detect echoes of the triumphantBritannia (Thomas Arne composed Rule Britannia in 1740) incontemporary Brexit debates? What were the subliminalrefractions of the refrain ‘Britons never will be slaves’ incomplaints about the frequently evoked ‘Brussels shackles’?Through a longue durée approach to two major elements ofmodern British history – Britannia and the celebration ofcolonial expansion as a ‘bringer of progress’, this article chartsthe persistence of political and cultural visions including theEmpire simultaneously as an expression, a tool and a channelof British exceptionalism. Positing that the Empire wasintegral to the emergence of British identity and itsconsolidation, it also underlines, through references to JohnRobert Seeley’s highly influential work, the key role played byEngland in this process. Based upon the hypothesis that pastreflections on Britain’s global role – including thosechampioned by Cecil John Rhodes – have left an imprint onthe Brexit conversation in the run-up to, and aftermath of, thevote, this article introduces the concept of ‘imperial factor’ asa way of taking into account the long-term impact that thedevelopment and possession of the world’s largest empirehas left on British ways of seeing the world, and, crucially, ofseeing Britain’s place in the world. Beyond the case-study ofexceptionalism offered here, further research, especially of aquantitative nature, is suggested to refine our understandingof the precise extent to which the ‘imperial factor’ played arole in the Brexit vote of 2016. Conceived as an instrument totake into account the potential imperial dimension of a multi-faceted phenomenon such as Britain’s departure from theEU, the ‘imperial factor’ is, more broadly, a useful tool togauge – in the UK but also among other formerly imperialnations – the potential and variable long-term influence thatthe possession of an empire left on national visions, psyche and practices
How Texas Will Meet Its Energy Efficiency Goals
While competition is being introduced in the
retail electricity markets in Texas, efforts are also
underway to structure a competitive market for the
provision of energy efficiency and other competitive
energy services. Under the state's 1999 electric
utility restructuring legislation, the regulated
distribution arm of each investor-owned utility must
meet at least 10% of its annual load growth through
energy efficiency, beginning January 1, 2004
(municipally-owned and rural electric utilities are
specifically exempted). This will be accomplished
with standard offer programs and limited, targeted
market transformation programs. Eight new standard
offer and market transformation programs have been
developed and unveiled in the state that leads the
nation in electricity consumption.
This paper describes the new programs and
presents Texas' plan for addressing the following key
issues: 1) How the standardization of energy efficiency
program design among the various utilities will
be achieved 2) How the new energy efficiency programs will
be funded 3) How measurement and verification (M&V) of
energy efficiency measures and results may be
simplified without unduly sacrificing accuracy 4) What program outreach activities may be
necessary and should be pursued 5) How competition may be fairly promoted
among all interested energy efficiency service
providers (EESPs) 6) How all Texans may have access to energy
efficiency services as the electricity markets are
restructured 7) How customer protection provisions may be
adequately addressed.
Also, achievements and lessons learned from
pilot programs that were conducted in 2000-2001 are
reported here. This paper is of particular importance
to policy makers, analysts and other interested parties
in areas where electricity markets are undergoing
restructuring and similar challenges are being
addressed
HUBUNGAN ANTARA SELF-REGULATED LEARNING DENGAN PROKRASTINASI PADA SISWA-SISWI KELAS XI SMK NEGERI 50 JAKARTA TIMUR
BERNY SUSWANTO. CORRELATION BETWEEN THE SELFREGULATED LEARNING ON STUDENTS PROCRASTINATION ON STUDENT CLASS XI SMK 50 JAKARTA. Skripsi, Jakarta: Program Study of Commerce Education, Majoring of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Economics, State University of Jakarta, in January 2016.
This study was to gain knowledge about the "Correlation between SelfRegulated Learning with Procrastination in class XI students of SMK Negeri 50 East Jakarta".
The method used in this research is survey method with the correlational approach. The population in this study is a class XI student of SMK Negeri 50 East Jakarta on 2015/2016 generation academic year, amounting to 210 students .. The sampling technique in this study using the technique of sampling Simple random sampling and taken by proportionately. Which is the all member of the population has an equal opportunity to be elected as members of the sample. This technique is used in the hope of a data representation of the population. Samples taken as many as 130 people by tables Isaac & Michael determination of the number of samples of a given population with a 5% error level. Self-Regulated Learning with Procrastination produce regression coefficient of -0.460 direction and generate constant at 107.46. Thus, the relationship between the Self-Regulated Learning with Procrastination has a regression equation y = 107,46-0,460X. Requirements analysis Test results of the calculation are the estimated regression error normality test Y on X with the test Lilliefors produce Lo = 0.049 whereas for n = 130 with a significance level of 0.05 = 0.078. Because Lo < Lt the estimated error of regression of Y on X is a normal distribution.
Linear regression, hypothesis testing is done by first testing the significance of regression, the results of Fo = 53.34 > Ft = 3.92 indicates that the regression equation means, then calculated the correlation coefficient rxy = -0.542 results. The next step to do is to test the significance of the correlation coefficient with the results -to = -7.30> -tt = -1.645. So it can be concluded that the Self-Regulated Learning (Variable X) with Procrastination (Variable Y) are negative and significant correlation. Test determination coefficient of 29.41% was obtained Procrastination (Variable Y) is affected by the Self-Regulated Learning (Variable X), the rest influenced by other variables
Forecasting and risk analysis applied to management planning and control
The aim of this research was to improve the quantitative support to project planning and control principally through the use of more accurate forecasting for which new techniques were developed. This study arose from the observation that in most cases construction project forecasts were based on a methodology (c.1980) which relied on the DHSS cumulative cubic cost model and network based risk analysis (PERT). The former of these, in particular, imposes severe limitations which this study overcomes. Three areas of study were identified, namely growth curve forecasting, risk analysis and the interface of these quantitative techniques with project management. These fields have been used as a basis for the research programme. In order to give a sound basis for the research, industrial support was sought. This resulted in both the acquisition of cost profiles for a large number of projects and the opportunity to validate practical implementation. The outcome of this research project was deemed successful both in theory and practice. The new forecasting theory was shown to give major reductions in projection errors. The integration of the new predictive and risk analysis technologies with management principles, allowed the development of a viable software management aid which fills an acknowledged gap in current technology

Legal and non-legal barriers to abortion in Ireland and the UK
This article compares abortion laws, regulations and access patterns in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. We focus in most detail on the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and England with a shorter discussion of Scotland and Wales. We attend to the laws and legal reforms in each region but also consider the non-legal factors that restrict or facilitate abortion services in each place. In this article, we seek to illustrate the complex relationship between abortion law and abortion access, noting especially how non-legal barriers shape the way an abortion law functions for the people who live under it
